The Daemon Meme

In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (see: The Golden Compass Movie, His Dark Materials on HBO, the books), every person has a creature called a daemon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Daemons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).
Basic Daemon Facts:

• They take the shape of animals
• They can talk, no matter what their shape
• Children's daemons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
• Neither the person or the daemon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
• They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
• If a daemon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
• Being physically apart from one's daemon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
• Daemons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but daemons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's daemon without permission is a terrible violation.
• If a daemon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa

How it works:

Just design a daemon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a top-level, with your muse's name and series in the subject. Check out other people's daemons and let your daemons interact too.

He does not eat humans, but shows the same leaning toward animal and plant life over humanoid beings. He is as much a protector as his counterpart is.

She is particularly protective of Aran after their separation in his teens in which she had to search for him through the turmoil and pain they both suffered. ]

As a dream walker, Aran wasn't anything particularly special or showy in the mutant/powered department. He knew this, but Neasa was, well, Neasa. And he loved her dearly. She'd saved him in many ways, literal and not so literal. And now the Irish duo were in the USA starting over.

Running into the American Hero himself and his daemon was not something he was expecting while they were out at the park. But Aran couldn't help but enjoy the loveliness of the wolf's fur. And yes, it was the beautiful wolf. He was no ogling the man. Even if Neasa chuckled at his internal denial, so clear to her.

Neasa stretched in a languid, fashion to sho of her slender, sleek form and then moved about to purposefully cross in front of the man and his daemon, wanting the attention Aran wouldn't put himself out there to seek for himself.

A lot of people mistake Asteri for a large dog they first time they see her. She's not the coloring they expect for a wolf--the creams and browns throwing them off and making them think she's maybe a german shepherd, maybe something with husky. They see her with Steve and think he's a rule follower, a good soldier, someone who listens to orders. It's not until they're close enough that they see the large paws, her keen eyes, those teeth and realize she's a wolf--fiercely loyal, fiercely protective of her chosen pack, and fiercely independent.

Steve adores her endlessly. And no more than on days like this--sunshine, breeze, and no one trying to kill them -- at least for the moment. It's harder for Ast'i to stretch her legs in New York than it is in some of the other places they've been (no better place to run than across a battle field), but they try to make it to the park as often as they can.

The kid in front of him isn't who he expected to run into when they left the apartment this morning, but that doesn't mean he's upset about it. Asteri is curious despite herself, tail wagging slightly as bright eyes track the stunning cat pacing back in forth in front of them. There are some daemons that she will have nothing to do with--belying the fact that Steve himself can be black and white sometimes when it comes to people. She doesn't trust snakes, gives a second glance at anyone with a poodle by their side, and save Natasha's spider, she's not a huge fan of daemons small enough to hide from her. Cats though? Cats she likes.

When Steve doesn't give off anything to indicate the stranger as a threat, she prances forward, nose twitching as she tries to catch the cat's scent.

"Who are you?" She asks, and Steve tries not to groan. Asteri doesn't think small talk has any place in conversation. Why go through the motions if you can just ask someone what you want to know outright?

"Sorry, ignore her," He instructs, even as she looks over her shoulder, giving him a toothy grin that makes her look more like a dog than anything she's done before. He extends his hand. "I'm Steve and this is Asteri, she has no manners."

"My, ain't she just forward as all get out," came the thick Irish brogue of Neasa, light and lilting. A musical feline voice that Aran loved listening to. The comment might be off-putting for some, but there was amusement there, and she preened a little.

Aran smiled and shook his head a little as he picked himself u and approached, hesitantly taking the man's hand when it was offered. Being greeted and treated as an actual person were things he was still getting used to.

"Aye, I know who ya are," he said with a little grin, his 'I' coming out as 'oy' with his own brogue, though a bit lighter than Neasa's. "Kinda hard not to. Being all big and famous as ya both are. I'm Aran, and this is Neasa," he introduced them both to Steve and Asteri, his name like 'Erin', and Neasa's like 'Nyas-ae'.

His daemon was taking a moment to slink around Asteri, and then sit at Aran's sid, licking a paw as if some glorious noble feline.

She's only settled into a form well into his adulthood, when Ben chose to abandon the Kylo Ren persona - as Kylo, he was too immature and indecisive.]

People tend to expect a toad. Heck, he expected her to settle that way. He's still getting used to the permanent presence of an immense, mangy looking hyena. She's really done it for him when it comes to stealth missions, but he's figuring out how to own it. As Trixie shoves her nose rudely in Lockheed's direction, her counterpart crouches on the nearest treebranch.]

Hey, X-kitty.

[ Lockheed backs up a few steps while making a noise similar to the sound of water droplet, before scurrying up Kitty's arm and onto her shoulder. As she glances up, she frowns. ]

What do you want, Todd?

[ While she's not thrilled to see him, she at least tries not to be entirely hostile by using his actual name instead of his more common nickname. ]

[Even he doesn't believe his brief attempt at looking harmlessly innocent. Todd lacks the social awareness to appreciate his name, but he does relax a little After all, Kitty hangs around Lance all the time. She's not the worst X-geek.]

Security guy on Main Street thinks I'm gonna rip off hubcaps. Layin' low for a while, that's all.

[He flips upside down on the branch as Trixie begins prowling, looking for an in to pester the smaller daemon.]

[ From where he sits on Kitty's shoulder, Lockheed makes a hissing sound that isn't exactly normal for salamanders.

Kitty doesn't say anything for a moment. On the one hand, things between the X-Men and the Brotherhood are still tense at times. Even with her dating Lance again, it feels like any agreement between the two groups is shaky at best, and it's only a matter of time before they're on opposite sides again.

On the other hand, she knows - mostly because she hangs around with Lance a lot - that the Brotherhood isn't all bad. They fall in a pretty gray zone, for the most part. And with people giving mutants more of a hard time these days, she wouldn't be surprised to hear that someone was quick to assume he was up to no good.

Even if she's a bit suspicious of it herself.

Still, eventually she sighs and waves a hand in a 'whatever' gesture. ]

[He looks faintly surprised. Did not expect that to work. He's used to being told to get lost, or at least being told that he's being treated like a suspicious potential criminal because he is exactly that.

It really throws off his bad attempts at tough guy patter.]

Cool. So. Uh.

[What do people talk about? Picking up on his sudden confusion, Trixie whumphs loudly down into the grass and looks up at Kitty and Lockheed with... weird, slightly unstable hyena eyes. Which Todd finds pretty cute, but the opinion isn't universal.]

[ Oddly enough, his surprise actually gets a small laugh from her. Not a cruel one, but one that sounds more amused than anything. Lockheed doesn't share in her amusement, though, as he looks at Trixie warily. ]

Not much. I just needed to get out of the institute for a while.

[ As much as she loves it there, sometimes it was just nice getting some time to herself. ]

[Oh, yeah, he can totally see that, needing some space away from the house of creepy mind-control and bonkers attack rooms. And regular food and paid bills keeping the lights and heat on.

So are you just biding your time then? Or have you given up for today?
