Mateo shut the door behind Ben and then moved to grab the two drinks he'd already poured and he brought the to the coffee table in front of the couch.

"Just the normal kind of long day?" he asks. His shift hadn't been too extraordinary, no crazy calls or weather to contend with for once.

Ben set the bag of food down before he sat down on the couch. He stretched out, groaning as his back popped. He then leaned forward to start to unpack the food. "Yeah, just normal long day. I feel like if one of is has a crazy day, we both do."

"I wasn't about to leave a gentle lady like yourself high and dry! It's my pleasure, really." He smiles over his shoulder if there's a chance she can see at all, and gently adjusts his grip on her legs.

"You okay up there? I know armor isn't the most comfortable thing."

She smiles faintly herself when she sees his smile. That at least makes her feel a little better about all this.

"I'd say a little discomfort is a small price to pay for not being a crumpled heap on the ground." She closes her eyes and lets out a soft sigh. "I really can't thank you enough."

She's such a sweet girl. That she would feel guilty about letting Sylvain protect her hurts him deep in his blackened heart.

"I guess I'm still not used to having people to rely on." She laughs, a bit self-deprecatingly, then sighs again. "It's kind of silly after this long, isn't it?"

I make enemies in my job, and I don't have a mask to hide behind. People always want to take their shit out on me. And when they can't do that, they'll try and do it on someone I care about. It happens every damn time.

"Nothing wrong with wanting to be strong and protect yourself. Just don't lose sleep over needing help sometimes, ok? We're in the same army, we'd be a poor force if we couldn't work as a team."

"It does help that I've met so many reliable people, though. That makes things easier." She pauses, then smiles. "You're one of my first real friends, you know?"
