Keith's work with the Blade of Marmora still takes him to far flung reaches of the galaxy and even farther, these days. The battle is over for the moment, but that doesn't mean the war has ended, and they can't let up now, not when they're this close. Given how decimated the Blade had been at the hands of the Druids, it means that all hands are needed.

So Keith goes where he's needed, when he's needed, when his duty to the paladins on Earth allows it.

This particular mission has taken him away longer than he'd expected, been a little more complicated than it should have been. So it's a weary, travel-worn Keith that Shiro will find at the door to his quarters late in the evening, ringing the bell to announce his presence and stepping back to wait for an answer, hoping Shiro is in. He's still in his Blade uniform, mask gone, hood down, hair braided back and out of the way.

Absence is a fact of life when you join the military and even more so when you're in the position Keith holds, dividing his time between his duties to Voltron's team and his mother's people. Shiro knows that, understand it, but it doesn't mean he's not relieved to open the door and see Keith there.

Back and in one piece. His smile is a brief one before he steps aside, letting Keith enter and closing the door behind him.

"...Welcome back."

"Good to be back," Keith manages a smile in turn, genuine in the way it so often is around Shiro and no one else, if tinged with weariness at the edges. The words are an old, familiar echo, but still true. So true.

The door shuts behind him, and Keith closes the distance between them, winding his arms around Shiro and pressing his face to the juncture of the other man's neck and shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent of him.

"Missed you." The words are muffled but still audible.

Of course he notices how tired Keith is, arms sliding around him when Keith moves in for the hug, eyes closing for a moment as he just savored the feeling of holding Keith. It's always a relief when he's back and Shiro can touch him.

Can physically reassure himself Keith is there. He lifts one hand, loosening Keith's braids to let his hair fall loose.

"You should get some sleep."
