The Historical AU Meme

The glory of Rome! The pageantry of medieval times! The etiquette of the Regency era! The glamour of the twenties, the free-wheeling of the seventies, and - of course - the final frontier of the future.

R U L E S:

1. Post your character! Name and series in the subject line.

2. Find someone to play with! Use the RNG for a time period and situation.

3. Make excellent choices!

O P T I O N S:

1) Greco-Roman - Togas! Tunics! Gladiatorial fights and getting stabbed right in the forum! (And that's really sensitive, you know.) Maybe you're in the recently-conquered Londinium, or maybe you've made your home in Pompeii and ... hey, do you hear that?

2) Medieval - Jousting! Pointy hats! Castles! Dormice inside of a rabbit inside of a chicken inside of a duck inside of a swan inside of a pig inside of a cow! Are you royalty, a peasant, or something in between?

3) Renaissance - It's a time of discovery and revelation! New scientific breakthroughs are being made every day, and incredible literature and poems are being written all the time. Perhaps you've made your home in Venice, and you're adding to the flow of progress - or fighting against it.

4) Victorian/Edwardian - Everything is repressed and a series of gestures with a fan can make or break a hopeful suitor's night. There are balls and salons and ridiculously thorough rules of etiquette. Are you solving mysteries with Sherlock Holmes or drinking absinthe in a bar by the Moulin Rouge?

5) 1920s - Flappers! Prohibition! Everyone's dancing the Charleston and watching these new silent movies. That is, unless they've escaped to Paris to drink a lot and write about the human condition. Do you party like the world's about to end or ponder what would happen if it did?

6) 1950s - Are you willing to leave it to Beaver? It's the time of adorable housedresses, three-martini lunches, and everyone owning a brand new refrigerator - on credit! Gee whiz, it sure is great, isn't it?

...wait, what was that about nuclear bombs?

7) 1970s - Disco! Margaret Thatcher! Drugs! The '70s are a time of social upheaval and change, not to mention leisure suits. Are you at the forefront of feminism or busting a move at the discotheque?

8) Present day - it's now! Everyone's got an iPhone and a Facebook and are constantly Twittering about their MySpace. People are more connected than ever, and the world is growing smaller and smaller every day.

9) The future! - The final frontier! Are we colonizing Mars or exploring the galaxy in a big, groovy spaceship? Have we made first contact yet? Has someone finally gotten around to inventing Holodecks? If you can dream it, maybe it's happened!

10) Got a different/better idea? Some time or place I didn't think of? This is for you!

S C E N E S:

1) Having a meal! With your family, your significant other, your best friend. Is it fit for a king or what you've managed to scrounge together from what's left?

2) A night's entertainment! Going to see a show at the Globe Theater, taking in a movie, or watching a troupe of performers put on a passion play - either way, it won't be a dull night.

3) Courting! Maybe you're in an arranged marriage, or necking in the backseat of your best guy's T-Bird at the drive-in movie theater.

4) School! Are you learning from Miss Emmeline at a one-room schoolhouse, taking notes on Latin from the tutor your father hired, or at a British boarding school?

5) It's a party! Maybe you're having a hell of a time at Studio 54 or giggling behind your fan at a ball with your best friend while you wait for the boys you like to ask you to dance.

6) Political intrigue! Is someone trying to stage a coup for your throne? Is your political rival trying to knock you out of the Senate?

7) Rivals! Maybe you're two lords fighting over the same eligible lady, or maybe he's picked on you since you were both kids growing up on the same block.

8) Family! You've got kids now, or maybe you are the kids. Perhaps you're out from dawn till dusk tilling the fields, or your biggest concern is making sure your daughters marry well.

9) Market day! Are you at the mall checking out the newest saddle shoes and cuffed denim? Are you making your way to the nearest town with sheep and cows to sell?

10) Got something better? Want to combine a couple of these? Go for it!

1970'S SCHOOL LET'S GO

[personal profile] moonswings 2012-12-08 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
[It's a bit of a shock to the system to go from freezing, snow-soaked layers to the steamy warmth of the prefects' bath. Remus rubs his (undoubtedly bright red) nose as he unwinds his scarf from around his neck, laying it out on the nearest bench.]

If we catch cold, I'm blaming you.

[personal profile] punctiliously 2012-12-08 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'll try very hard to shoulder that burden. [How many times did you have that scarf wrapped around your neck, Remus? Q is kicking off his boots, feeling very charming indeed as his nose runs in the damp heat. He has no regrets, however, and despite the fact that snow has by now quite thoroughly soaked through the back of his coat/sweater/shirt, he's happy.] Though I'm not sure how I would live with myself if you missed a day of class on my account.
moonswings: (and i can almost smell you)

[personal profile] moonswings 2012-12-08 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
[They're really making a mess of the bathroom, which isn't fitting at all for prefects. At the moment, though, Remus cares far less about cleaning up after themselves and far more about getting into that very inviting-looking bath.

He's shivering as he tugs off his sweater, tossing it in Q's general direction.]

You'd have to bring notes to me in the infirmary. And turn in my essays for me so they wouldn't be late.
punctiliously: (pic#5306887)

[personal profile] punctiliously 2012-12-08 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'd have to copy my notes for you, and that would be tedious. [The sweater hits him on the leg, falling to an undignified pile on the floor. Q's soon joins it, and he scrabbles to undo his belt, matching Remus goosebump for goosebump.] And you'd be wanting chocolate in bed, and all of the other patients would be envious. [Q might be convinced to smuggle in treats for Remus, but it wouldn't do if other students knew of prefects sneaking each other treats.]
moonswings: (but i hate when i feel like this)

[personal profile] moonswings 2012-12-08 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose we all learn from our mistakes. [Because Remus requires an awful lot of chocolate on sick days, and he's almost positive Q does not have a sufficient stash hidden away. Let that be a lesson to him.

He toes the rest of his clothing away from him, but not before retrieving a bottle from his robes, setting it down on the edge of the bath as he dips his toes in, wiggling them.]
And this is almost certainly another mistake. Sirius would kill me if he knew I made off with his fire whiskey.

Do you realize how many upsetting things I saw when I tried to google for concept art of this room??

[personal profile] punctiliously 2012-12-08 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
Or we ought. [Q sets his glasses down carefully; they might be charmed (because we both know that this was really just an elaborate excuse to play Marauder-era crossover shenanigans, the status of bakerstreet aside), but there's a limit to what's acceptable to wear in the bathtub. And as far as any potential chocolate stashes may be concerned, he's not above asking the house elves nicely on behalf of an ill friend, but he prefers that it not come to that.

Regardless, he slides into the water, crouching down on the edge and slipping in with hardly a ripple. The water is really too hot for his cold skin, but he's a properly stoic young man, and doesn't react beyond abruptly turning the color of a well-cooked lobster. He quirks an eyebrow up at Remus.]

No? I think he'd be rather proud. He'd probably say it was his idea. "Corrupting prefects" and the like. [Apparently the thought doesn't worry him unduly, because he picks up the bottle and opens it, sinking down to his ears in the water.]

[It's always nice to get out of camp for a while. The stalag was homey, in a cold and threadbare way, but Carter enjoyed the assignments that took him out of the country for a bit.

They've hooked up with these British folks now, in a special kind of stealth boat off the coast. Colonel Hogan's out doing debriefings and plannings with the higher ups while Carter's left to kick his heels and sip coffee while perched on a munitions crate. He isn't usually invited to planning meetings since he generally has little to contribute. Unless it needs to go boom or they need someone to pretend to be an angry Kraut, Carter's best used by being kept out of the way.

Oh hey, a person.]

[It's not that rare for a woman to be an operative with MI6, but it's rare enough that Myra is more than aware of her gender; every single day, something is said or done that just brings home that she doesn't belong here.

Which is why she's more than happy to volunteer for missions that take her off-base, it removes the more sexist of her comrades from her company.

This, however, is something new.]

Don't worry, we do this kind of thing all the time. [The American looks like he should be in high school, not fighting a war. He's huddled up in the dark farmhouse under a thick wool coat. His outfit is that of a German soldier, carefully tailored by the boys back at Stalag 13.] It's kind of our specialty.

Joining the USO was supposed to be Billy's chance at the fame of the army without having to actually put himself in danger. Fighting from the stage, crooning into his microphone, that was supposed to be the safe option.

And then the Nazis rolled into town. Most of the unit he was staying with has been captured, Billy along with them but the Germans have been starved for entertainment for a while. Sing us some of those American songs, there, and maybe you won't get shot.

Billy swallows his pride and gives them his best Frank Sinatra impression, hoping the reinforcements show up before he finds himself breaking character.

That's not quite as reassuring as you think it is... [But she's there, huddled beside him, dressed as any rural German villager would dress — nobody would believe she worked for the Nazi military, no way. Her short hair is covered by a shawl, and she's fairly grateful for it for more than the camouflage it gives her. It's cold.]

[Carter's smile looks completely out of place on a German officer.] It's what we're for. We're in the last place anyone would expect to have a sabotage group, so we're great at what we do.

[He taps the box next to him.] We plant this baby and we're just fine.
