Ludwig had always been a bit lost in a toy store. He didn't have his brother's love of playing. Though, he did have a secret love, even as an adult, of car models. Truly cars were his favorite hobby, he only regretted having to make their repair his career, since he couldn't go into his true career choice.

Yes, that was the most disappointing thing in high school, to be laughed at by the career councilor when he said he wanted to be a teacher.

He briefly glances over at the car models and notes there is one he doesn't have and depending on what his brother gets he may get it today. Right now, he'll just let Gilbert lead.

[ He goes spelunking on his own more than Jake realizes. The problem is he never actually sleeps, so when he's on his own is when Jake's in bed. There's nothing wrong with being on his own, he's okay with it, he's been that way for years!

He just doesn't notice that maybe 12 hours apart for him doesn't quiet translate the same way to Jake.

But that's fine! On his most recent expedition he'd found a doozy of a boss and a cave that housed a scene right out of one of Jake's shitty copy of Avatar, complete with glowing trees and blue creatures. Granted these creatures were blue butterflies, but it was better than nothing. Dirk had never even seen a tree before, let alone an actual butterfly. That's a feeling that a couple should share, right? ]

Mostly Gilbert loved to build things and take them apart and fiddle with them. See how they worked. Make them better. Which was why he had always loved construction toys. He would likely end up lost as Hell in the baby section, or if they had a child who somehow had traditional Omega interests... But he at least had some idea of how to navigate a toy store without looking out of place.

He stopped in the baby section. Wow, there were a lot of fancy electronic doodads with bright lights and the ability to play music and noises. Gil pressed a button to test one... and immediately cringed at how loud it was. And he liked loud music!

[ Jake takes his time getting ready, mostly shuffling around his room and playing with his sylladex. (Totally not innuendo there, I promise.) He goes with his most recent outfit because...he feels a bit dashing in it and it lifts his mood just enough to get him to actually walk out the door.

He makes one last check of his guns before sliding them into his super classy thigh holsters as he walks into the kitchen. ]

Nah. I told you, you're going to love it. [ He turns away, muttering a rap under his breath to put the right items in and take the right ones out. His mask is fitted firmly over his face and he walks out the door, tosses the rocketboard down and beckons Jake over. ]

When the noise finally stopped, Ludwig, with a horrified look asked, "Are babies deaf?" Why was it so loud? What was the purpose of all that noise. Oh look, puzzles for babies. And chew toys... "Chew toys?" Of course they were teething toys, but they looked like chew toys.

[ Hasn't he heard that before? Like, almost any time Dirk wants to show him something? Jake thought it was fun at first, but when there's something new to show him every day, it gets a little tiring. He only responds to half of the invitations, as Dirk will usually end up bringing something to him if he doesn't make an effort himself.

When did he start to become such a grumpy old man?? That's not like a good adventure-hearted hero at all.

Jake still doesn't look entirely convinced, but he puts on his gas mask and steps onto the rocketboard. ]

"They will be after playing with that thing!" His expression was likely equally horrified. Was that supposed to somehow be entertaining or amusing to a child? It made him want to throw a tantrum, almost, and he at least had words to express himself.

"Huh? Chew to- Ludwig, those are for teething." He may not have read any books, but he had certainly been there when Ludwig was a baby. And Mutti had been ecstatic that he'd been so interested in his baby brother; though it had taken him years to finally understand why.

[ He kicks off and they're going at lightspeed, around bends and curves and giant skeletal beasts that are eager to fuck them up. Through dungeons they've already gone through, swerving through a cavern in the most recent one they'd cleared, through an invisible wall and into the lair of a large skeletal dragon.

Dirk's already jumping off the board and into the fray before it's properly stopped. Or even started to slow down at all. ]

"Oh..." he looked embarrassed again. "So we probably won't need those for awhile." He picked up one of the puzzle things. It wasn't a complex puzzle just five pieces that fit together like one of those block toys. "Books..." he had turned his head slightly to see a whole bunch of books, many had pretty pictures of princesses and such on them, but some were clearly geared to new parents.

He picked up one of the latter which was called, "Playing With Your Child". Yes, he would need an instruction manual for this, he was clearly way too attached to rules and instructions.

"Nah, probably not until this time next year at the earliest." He looked around, frowning. Most of the toys he wanted to grab probably wouldn't suit a newborn at all. "Wonder if there's a book that says what toys you get a baby..." Gil hadn't even noticed that Ludwig had somehow instinctively found the instruction manual section.

He picked up a cute looking plush puppy, squeezing it to test how soft it was. And then he nearly jumped when it squeaked!

...He was beginning to feel more and more like they could probably just go looking at dog toys... And Ludwig had felt that a puppy wouldn't be like a baby.

Well as far as growing and maturing into an intelligent person, not the puppy wouldn't be like a baby as far as pooping, eating, and playing went. But a puppy couldn't learn to say "Vati" or walk on two legs.

He open the book and found that it was essentially geared towards Alphas who knew nothing. It seemed more geared to Alphas with Alpha children, he did not understand why books assumed that an Alpha parent would ignore a Beta or Omega child. There was nothing wrong with the other natures.

"Hmmm..." he was already devouring the book when his brother squeaked the toy nearly making him jump out of his skin. "What?" He turned around. "Why do all the toys seem to make noise?" Though a rattle was pretty necessary. And oh, a pacifier.

"Babies like noise? You had the most annoying rattle as a baby. Drove us all crazy if we let you have it, but the screaming when it got taken away or you dropped it..." That had not been a fun month in the Beilschmidt household, especially as otherwise Ludwig had been a fairly patient and quiet baby. Though apparently even then he had had his favourite toys. "Really made me regret telling Mutti to get it for you."

"Oh, is that an instruction manual? What does it suggest?" He leaned over to peer at the book, though he couldn't quite read it at the angle he was at.

"For infants it indicates rattles, toys to enhance gripping and motor functions, soft stuffed animals, simple shapes, and musical toys," he said. Browsing the passage on appropriate toys for newborn to about six months.

He tilted his head as he considered that, then nodded. "Alright then. But we're gonna get, I dunno, little windchimes or some shit. I dunno about you, but I like being able to hear." Out of curiousity, he asked, "What about older babies?" Of course, he had no idea the book was aimed solely at Alpha parents of Alpha children.

"For older it indicates foam blocks, teething rings, simple toys shaped like transportation equipment (cars, trains, boats, etc), and picture books with similar subjects," he said. He frowned, again, why couldn't he give his kid the pretty princess book?

Gilbert frowned. That seemed awfully specific, and absolutely nothing like what he'd had growing up until Ludwig had come along. "That... uh. I didn't have toys like that. I don't think? Not until you were old enough to get things like blocks and Legos and whatnot..."

"I cannot find a book that indicates how to play with a non-Alpha child," he said. At least, not one geared to teaching Alphas. Why were people stuck in the stone age?

[O was looking in the fridge for some milk to have with her cocoa puffs when she noticed that the empty carton was still in the fridge. It has given her a false sense of happiness for a moment. Putting it down on the counter, she yelled out to the living room.]

Clint! You put the empty milk back in the fridge? Damn-it, we have like, no food in here!

His brows creased further as he processed that statement, before looking away. "Oh." Right, well. Cute plushes and rattles and geometric shapes. He'd just start looking at the toys that met that description, to hide how his expression had fallen.

How stupid of him, forgetting that Alpha children were the best. (He knew it was even more stupid and unawesome, but sometimes he laid awake terrified that the baby currently growing inside him was a little Omega boy.)

"Th-they don't have any books about the other natures...?" Betas seemed simple enough. At least from his observations it was fairly flexible how to raise them; though males tended to get pushed more towards Alpha roles and interests and females towards the Omega side of things.

I rolled an eight.

[O felt like a cold was coming on, she had been sneezing wildly on and off all day long. O was cold as well, wrapped up like a mummy on the couch as she parked her butt there to watch television. No one was home yet either, because she had absolutely no cold medicine in the house, barely any tissues, no aspirin, no flu meds, and her pot stash was at an all time low.

What a cranky bitch she was slowly becoming. Though, it took all of her energy to hold it all in. Picking up her cell, she called his phone one last time, but it went to voice-mail again. She hoped he would make it home soon?]

He saw the expression and despite being in a very public place where it could be misunderstood, he gave his brother a firm hug. "You know I don't care if the child is Alpha, Omega, Beta, or even some new nature that has never existed before." He said softly.

After a moment he released his brother and turned back to the books to see if he had missed one that might be more appropriate.

"I know," Gilbert murmured in response. Once Ludwig had pulled away and turned back to the books, Gil hugged a mercifully not squeaky frog plushie to his chest, squeezing it tightly.

Sometimes… Sometimes it wasn't the fear of Ludwig's reaction that kept him up at night. Not when he knew his brother's feelings and could hear them reaffirmed so sincerely and without any sort of prompting. No. It was his own response that had Gil worried. Whilst right now he hardly cared one way or the other about the child, so long as it got out of him at some point… Deep down, he didn't want it to be an Omega. Not at all. He didn't really care to consider why he didn't want that, because he had the more pressing fear that he would genuinely hate the baby if it turned out to be Omega. And he doubted Lud would ever tolerate that.

He cleared his throat. "Any luck?"

[And though his tone is as calm and collected as it ever is, the unspoken "until I had to investigate this" is still apparent]

I assume you have a good reason for allowing the staff to idle away their paid hours?

He wasn't worried about Gilbert hating the baby, he was more afraid of Gilbert hating himself. And if he knew of Gilbert's thoughts he would assume that his brother's fears were based on his own experience.

But since Gilbert didn't say any of this out loud, he continued to looking at books until he came across one that seemed more geared to Betas, but it was about children of all natures. "Ja, this one." He pulled the book off the shelf and showed it to his brother.
