The List

The Butterfly Effect: It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterfly's wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world. ~ Chaos Theory

1. A personal divergence - Something different from canon happened to them or their friends and family and acquaintances, etc. Usually, the rest of this AU world is mostly the same as canon - but not always.

2. A societal divergence - Something a bit bigger happened, something big enough to effect society as a whole.

3. The divergence point was way back - Many things happened differently, and so this world is quite different from the canon one.

4. Genderbending - Their gender/sex has been flipped in this AU world.

And for something entirely different: A totally new AU, in which canon elements have been replaced.

5. Historical AU - welcome to life in a different time period entirely. The stone ages? The Victorian era?

6. The obligatory High School AU - Exactly what it says on the tin.

7. The sci-fi/fantasy world - Was there a door at the back of the closet into Narnia? Is it the 51st century? Perhaps they're dragon riders.

And anything else you happen to come up with.

[He sneaks into her bed early that morning, unable to stay put when the first rays of sun had crept past the curtains of his window. Today, he is one and ten, almost a man grown and he can not wait for his present. A tale of his father, as promised by his mother when she had asked what he wanted. There is nothing material he wants, nothing he desires more than to hear about his father, about the knight that stole his mother's heart and left a bastard child in her belly. While he hates it that the other children in the village calls her a whore or a wench for giving birth to a child that was named 'Snow'--for he knows that despite being born in the South, his mother is from the North and kept to that--she speaks of him with such love in her eyes that Jon wants to believe that his parents truly loved each other before his father died in the war that tore the dragons off the Iron Throne. Now the stag seats upon it and there's always a sadness in his mother's eyes when someone speaks of King Robert.

Jon curls against Lyanna, dark hair that is starting to curl now mingling with her own and he's sure they look like halves of the same thing, young and not so young, but fitting perfectly all the same. His smile hand slips into hers and the feather bed dips lightly as the white pup that follows him everywhere now climbs on the bed with them both. Ghost came with a sword a fortnight before, from a man who's letter made his mother cry when she thought he wasn't looking. He's debating shaking her awake but instead chooses to lay still, enjoying the last few moments of his childhood]

[She treats him like no bastard. Even if what they live off of is meager. Stark or no, she is still the woman who rejected the King. But Lyanna was a woman above her time. She made due no matter what. Jon did not go hungry, he wanted for nearly nothing. It may not be Winterfell, her other love, but it is home nonetheless

She wakes as soon as she feels the small body press into the bed. It does not take much to wake her from sleep, from her dreams of the white haired prince. But she still smiles. Turning to take him in her arms, she kisses the top of his head.

Eleven years has been much time. It still hurts to think about it, but she has Jon, and that is a gift in and of itself.]

And I suppose you think you're special since it is your name day? [She teases, still keeping her son close to her.]

[He shifts as she takes him in arms, cuking his head so she can't see his smile when she kisses the top of his head. He is child no more, he tells himself as he's soon to learn the way of the sword so he can become a knight like his father, but still he clings to Lyanna a moment longer.

When he looks up again, there's a boyish, rueful smile on his lips.]

No, I know I'm always special, Mother. Today is no different. [But the way he squirms in excitement, too polite to just drag his mother out of bed, tells otherwise.]
