It's textbook, really. Or, more accurately, parchment, because you've either found yourself or always been in a time (it doesn't necessarily have to be medieval) where swords are the weapons and the mindset of the day; at the very least, the rough and tumble attitude that comes with a knife's edge permeates the land. And you know how to wield a weapon, be it a blade, your own body, or something else entirely, so you've put it to good use.

You've become a sworn sword to protect someone.

It could be out of the goodness of your heart, out of heritage, or stemmed from a desire for compensation or power. No matter what the cause, however, one fact remains the same, and that's how you cannot let emotions cloud your judgement.

Of course, that may be a little easier said than done. When you're so close to a person, in order to keep them safe, and when you put your very life on the line...

...ah, but you must persevere. Your duty does not allow you to falter.

( People protecting Claire is a pretty huge part of her character, but I'm also open to turning the tables and having her be the protector for a change. )

[ Mitsuko has no loyalty to anyone, not unless it's to protect her own goals or life, so it'd be very interesting for her to be forced into protecting someone for the sake of her livelihood or for her to protect them because they're just that "valuable" -- for whatever reason. ]

[Flynn is pretty much a protector in canon, so he's well suited and perfectly willing to fill that role. Can also play him as a reluctant protected person.]

[I just had kind of an out-there idea. Would you be up for a scenario similar to the Overlord anime where Hana is trapped in an MMO/standard RPG as a Princess and Flynn is her NPC Knight protector who has no idea she's from the outside world since as an NPC he's incapable of being aware of anything outside his script?]

[Being sworn to; is pretty much queen of the moon Matrix, but we can go classical Fantasy or Holy Grail War, or even just swearing fealty post-War for peacekeeping purposes, whatever works!

If you wanna go the last one though you'll have to take 3rd fiddle to her wives unless you're one of them.]

[ The Captain of the Guard held a distinct position in the kingdom, obliged to groom his children into insurmountable warriors - living weapons sworn to protect the crown. Hwang Young-min was the third born in this family, and it was because of his heritage that his fate was sealed from birth. As such, he was to bear the brunt of rigorous training that would forge him into as fine a weapon as his brothers.

It's fortuitous, then, that Hwang happened to be born at the same time as the princess, Hana Song. Hwang was not only groomed to be a potential successor to the Captain of the Guard, but also to protect the princess herself. As such, he and Hana even grew up together, teaming up to fight the tediums of palace living by amusing themselves with their company. Hwang, after all, knew the ins and outs of the guards' security measures - so often, the two sneaked out and wreaked havoc past bedtime.

But as Hwang became of age, he had to go on a warrior's retreat - endure a crucible of tests that would prove to be the summit of his training.

He did not come back the same.

Hwang had come back resolute and brimming with purpose, aware of what the crown meant to Hana's kingdom.

Like every son of the Captain, Hwang earned a title that he became known by in every circle. It's like he'd been reborn and rechristened after his training.

He had become the Red Robin.

One night, Hwang approached Hana in the palace gardens. They'd long since reunited upon his return from the retreat, and things seemed to resume as normal. Hwang, after all, never lost his earnest and genuine nature that drew Hana to him. If anything, his experiences had brought his inner strength to the surface. ]

I won't dispute Your Highness's request to spar and train, but...

...it's the eve of the Lotus Lantern Festival. It wouldn't look good to show up in bruises.

[ Though Hwang has taken to fans in combat, he can't deny his bias for the staff - blunt and efficient, yet nonlethal. He wields it now, and horizontally tosses another in Hana's direction. ]

( Oh!! I'm not familiar with Overlord at all, but that sounds like a really neat premise! I'm assuming Hana would be aware that she's trapped in this game? I'm down to explore this if you want to write a starter to set us up! )

[I actually haven't seen it yet either, but the premise as explained to me by a friend is a guy gets trapped in his favorite MMO on the night it's supposed to get shut down and is the only human in a fantasy world of JRPG NPCs. There's also the added fact that his character is an evil Overlord he's been RPing as, and after the shock of being trapped wears off, he decides to play up his role and decides to conquer the MMO world. Though that part doesn't need to apply here unless you think Hana would like that.

And yes, Hana would be aware she's trapped.

Let me know if this isn't okay. I tried to keep it as vague as possible so you can fill in the blanks with whatever you wish. I'm also thinking Flynn will behave largely like a Host from Westworld. He has a lot of pre-programmed dialogue and there are things he can't say or respond to (like anything that suggests this world is just a game) but he's capable of improvising and having conversations with Hana.

Also, would you be down for smut, or just shipping for this thread?]

Flynn wasn't quite sure what to do. His princess had always been on the unusual side, but that used to just mean she was an adventurous tomboy who was always riding off to slay monsters and accomplish whatever repetitive quests the local villagers had. As the head of her knights, Flynn found himself constantly chasing after her, but he would not have had it any other way. ~~He was completely unaware of the fact that it was impossible for him to catch up with his Princess except during cutscenes or when Hana decided to use him as an NPC party member.~~

Lately however, Princess Hana had been acting quite strange indeed, saying things that made no sense and asking him why she couldn't "log-out". Flynn didn't know what that meant and found himself unable to answer. However, the mention of the word "log" triggered his dialogue about how he had received word that Kobolds were attacking the royal lumber-yard. Every. Single. Time.

This seemed to only make things worse, and Princess Hana's galavanting around the world became more frantic and desperate, with Flynn being equally frantic and desperate to catch up. Finally, Flynn did catch up, unaware that it was because Hana had allowed him to.

"My Lady," Flynn panted. "There you are! It's not safe out here, we must return to the castle at once!"

This would have been the forty-seventh time Hana had heard these words said in the exact same way. Flynn was an NPC, he couldn't help it. This was the most advanced video game on the planet, but even it had limits.

[ It was a common belief among members of the court and beyond to even commoners that the fates of Hwang Young-min and the princess would always be entwined in one way or another, fortuitous indeed as their nearly-coinciding births were.

While Hwang was the third born in his family, however, Hana was fifth, punctuating an already impressive line of sons - heirs and spares - with the birth of the king's one and only daughter with his most beloved queen. Thus the name Hana— the number one. It would follow, naturally, that Hana would be adored by nearly all those around her: the king's darling daughter, the queen's spitting image - in looks, mind, and most of all manner. And with four older brothers and a queen who was widely believed to be the true force of nature behind the kingdom's successes for a mother, it would also follow that the princess would grow up to be an absolute firecracker. It was equally fortuitous that Hwang would come to possess some degree of cool to balance the princess' fiery spirit, even if the two would often and regularly pick up mannerisms and qualities from each other. They complemented each other in a way that only grew more and more apparent (to everyone but the two, it would seem) as they grew older -

which was why Hwang's retreat was particularly hard on the princess.

While Hana did not undergo rigorous training in his absence, the absence of her most trusted and treasured companion since birth was a pain she felt almost every single day, finding herself turning with want to share something and finding no one there, having no one to sneak out with, no one to confide in. To ladies in waiting and guards and anyone close enough to Hana in Hwang's absence - including, of course, her own family - their princess appeared depressed. Lacking in spirit like no one had seen her entire life.

It had been her mother, at that time, who paid a visit to her daughter one evening and posed to her a challenge: while Hwang was away to prove himself a capable heir to the Guard, he was also proving himself a capable protector of the kingdom - and of Hana. The princess' task, then, would be to prove herself a liege worthy of such a champion.

It had been to the comfort of everyone in the palace that one thing remained intact of their princess' nature: she would never back down from a challenge. Furthermore, she would never lose against Hwang.

Thus she threw herself into her studies, all subjects required of a princess and then some. Kept up the training she had initially received from Hwang by sparring with one of her brothers. Performed admirably at social functions with all the grace - albeit a bit too sharp and abrasive at times - expected of a princess.

And so likewise, she would not remain the same. By the time Hwang made his triumphant return, Hana had become a woman almost fit to rule an empire all on her own. But like Hwang, she never lost the fire that endeared her to him and to most everyone else. When the two were brought back together, it was almost like nothing had changed - except everything had. And if there was a living soul left in the palace that couldn't see the proverbial red thread tying the two together, they certainly could now, after they had been reunited.

Now Hana is dressed in her warrior hanbok, as well, catching the staff with ease. And where Hana would have been wearing garments passed down from her brothers from when they were her age to training before, she now had her very own set, having earned it from the Captain himself after proving herself competent in a spar against one of the other Hwang brothers in Young-min's absence.

Still, she would be remiss to think that she can easily best Hwang Young-min. He is, after all, the one who taught her how to fight in the first place. ]

Then it's a good thing I won't be getting any bruises, Red Robin.

[ The smug look on her face is a familiar look, one she's shown him countless times over all their years growing up together. What isn't familiar is his new title, especially said in the somewhat irreverent, teasing way that she does. ]

Besides, I've been sitting all day in gatherings in preparation for the festival. I could stand to move around some.
