He watched her glance across to Melbourne, as he'd seen her do over and over again all evening. Melbourne's gaze had rested on her a lot too. Even if Jack hadn't heard the gossip, he'd have been aware of the connection between the two of them, and it was no surprise when Victoria declared Melbourne to be the person she would trust with personnel checks.

He didn't object. Victoria needed someone like Melbourne to advise and guide her.

"Thank you," he said warmly, and grinned down at her. "And don't worry, you shall yourself be my liaison on this. That's why I wanted to come to you direct in the first place. Who else could I trust on this better than you?"

He stepped back as the dance ended, bending into a reverent bow, keeping up the charade of formality even as he inclined his head slightly to acknowledge her instruction. "My pleasure, Majesty," he murmured, ostensibly thanking her for the dance, but he knew she would also construe it as agreement to meet her.

One last smile and then he was gone. When Victoria finally managed to slip away, she would find him waiting for her, a lot of the over-the-top effervescence gone and a much more sober look in his eyes.

((OOC: Excellent!))
