Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a conscientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be.

The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapiens. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed.

Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human.

So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know?

As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo!
All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best.
However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to.
According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right.
Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child.
It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant.
Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet.
These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders.
Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions.
Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends.
Despite this, masters must remember to not view their pets as romantic partners. Humans should stay with humans.

Needless to say, The Care and Keeping of Your Pet is a bit biased and full of propaganda, but it gives a good idea of the world your character is now AU's into. They are either a pet person or a human master, and what that means for them varies.

So are they a devoted pet or a rebellious animal person looking to buck the system? A generous master or a cruel sexual sadist? Just a normal pet owner? Most likely they're something in between, but when you're raised in this world, it's difficult to see anything different on the horizon.

Rules

Comment with your character and say whether they'd be a master or a pet. Ideally, they could be played as both. Mention what kind of each they'd be and what they'd be like, (ie: "Xx-chan is a bunny girl who is happy to please her master" or "Asterothia is a cat boy who is aloof but loyal to his true master"). For pets, be sure to include features ("wolf ears, tail, teeth).

REMEMBER, pet does not automatically equal submissive and master automatically equal dominant. This is not a BDSM setting though BDSM can be included. How far you want to go with the actual "pet" aspect is up to you, as well. Your pet could just be your slightly-furry roommate or soulmate!

This by now means an all-inclusive list, but it should get you going in the right direction.

First Time Pet/Owner: Usually, pets are gotten at a young age; you're an old dog. Can you learn new tricks?
True Bond: What all masters and pets yearn for...the pet's loyalty and adoration for life.
Love: It's expected for masters to love their pets, but to love them? Romance is strictly forbidden.
Old "Couple": Master and pet have grown together and know each other. You know, know each other.
Loss of Master: The pet has lost their master, perhaps even their True Bond. Is it possible to move on?
Young Master/Older Pet: Pets age quicker than masters, so it's possible to end up with a bit of an "age" difference.
Family Pet: This pet's been raised as part of the family. What happens when their feelings for a family member get more than platonic.
For Your Protection: You don't want to be a master, but you have to take in a pet for their protection lest they be in danger from the general public.
Stray: You're a stray or a "Free." Can you live like this with your biology screaming for you to make a match?
Servant: You're more servant than pet.
All Sex, All the Time: The only purpose for this pet is to service the master, and not in a way that means cleaning their house.
Guard: You're a loyal bodyguard, a service pet. You'll do anything for your master. Anything.
Pet Play: This is for those who prefer to keep their animals on leashes, have them eat from bowls, and keep away from clothing.
Breaking In: Training is important with any pet.
In Love with Another Master...or Pet: To lust after another's master is no better than treason, and to wish to be with another pet just cruel!
Punishment: Bad dog, no nookie!
Heat: All pets go into heat, and it's the responsibility of the owner to take care of this problem. After all, unchecked dry humping kills thousands every year.
Breeding: Breeders know the best qualities in each type and mate the cream of the crop together to continue lines. It's a hobby for some, a calling for others.
Pregnancy: So, about that whole "hybrid" thing. It maaaay be more true than you think, even if pet/human pregnancies are the stuff of salacious tabloids.
Territorial: Hey, hey, other dog person! This is your apartment. Stay the fuck out!
Kennel: Kennels are where unadopted pets are kept. They're generally agreed to be depressing places. Why not volunteer at one, keeping the pets healthy and happy with the kind of affection only humans can show?
Rebelling Against the System: Damn the Man! Pet people are people, too! Just be careful not to get talk. You know what happens to bad pets.
Instant Attraction: You ever just look at someone and know they're the one? That they're...your master? But what if you've been trying to fight it? Well, don't try!
Dominant Pet: You might be the pet, but you call the shots, at least in the bedroom.
Pet Show: Everyone wants to show off how perfect their animal is. Look at that ass! And you'll never believe their special skills...
Therapeutic: Pets, especially those bred for their kindliness, are perfect therapy for those who've been through trauma and heartache.
Jealousy: Who's that around your master? Oh, hell no. They better not be touching them!
Petting: Pet people are absolutely gaga for being touched. Even the most steely ones turn to mush for rubs.
Games: Playing with your pet and giving them exercise is a key to happiness. Of course, with a pet person, you might want to use other toys instead of a ball.

(As a pet, Fuyuhiko is a shiba inu or a ginger tabby cat. Interested in everything except in love with another master/pet and pregnancy.

As a master, he's loving but only really shows it behind closed doors, but takes good care of his pets. Interested in everything except servant, all sex, in love with another master/pet, breeding and pregnancy.)

As an owner, Lucas would be looking for an either inherently or by-behavior intimidating animal to act as a crony - whether it'd be on the level of being in on terrorizing people or simply lettin' him do his thing - unless you'd prefer an AU that sees him better able to pose/live innocuously, in which case he'd probably gravitate toward "weirder" animals (e.x. lizards and spiders) but ultimately have plausibly rolled with anyone who could stand him enough to pay him a certain kind of attention.

As a pet, he'd be a rat, a crow, or an alligator, likely an unruly stray or feral with an easily-bored and likes-to-destroy-furniture/belongings personality taken in either due to marriage of convenience or force - just keep him stimulated and he'll... probably be okay! Probably!

The only scenarios that don't really grab me for either are Loss of Master, Young Master/Older Pet, Family Pet, and Jealousy - otherwise, feel free to sling anything at me!]

majima would work best as a pet or a stray; he would make a shitty owner (but i'm willing to give that a shot if it's what you absolutely want to do - just be aware that he would be rough and bad at giving a pet affection and possibly borderline cruel and negligent without meaning to be).

as a pet, he is a dog-person, probably a dobie mix, with a docked tail and cropped ears because his first owner was an absolute super-cruel shitlord. (for reference: cropped and docked vs. natural) he was neutered and trained in his youth to fight in illegal pits/rings. he thought he had a true master at one point (the man who trained him into that lifestyle), but that whole situation went south (bonus points if anyone wants to pick this up with the canon Shimano situation in mind), and he found himself surprisingly unaffected by the loss. he even used to have a bondmate, but his bondmate was caught and probably put down for being overly aggressive and protective. after that, goro was devastated for months, but eventually picked himself up and kept going. he then spent the majority of his life 'til now as a mostly hostile stray, although people have occasionally tried to keep and rehabilitate him. he always escapes from those, but at least the experiences took some of his edge off. despite being neutered, he still power-humps for the sake of dominance and the mindless catharsis of fucking. he has not gone beta for anyone since the loss of his bondmate, BUT a true master might change that!

if you want to be his true master, be prepared for some strife, followed by downright suffocating loyalty. he will guard the living shit out of you and do anything in his limited power and twisted understanding to please you. and he will happily kill for you (TOO happily, in fact).

...Oh, and also, for the sake of this meme, he'd be a pet snake! Scaly patches and a tail anywhere from just a tail to 'taur-like with python-like green and brown-to-black coloration, may or may not have changed hands before and seems well-behaved, intelligent, outwardly undemanding, and to like people and company well enough, but still isn't... on a pack animal wavelength.

In Love With Another and Territorial are all that aren't really hitting me for this one - outside of that, come at me!]

1. [As a pet, Mitsunari Ishida is a wolfperson. He was a small, lithe, and really rather starving wolf puppy when first taken. Aaaand whoever his owner was, he really took to them. They might've had a bit trouble making sure he didn't bite other pets' throats, but that's what discipline's for, of course. And in everything else, he was a perfect pet in his behaviour, always. Loyal. Protective. All robbers would sooner try to rob a police office than try to rob the Owner's house. Etc.]

2. [As a master, he's still unsure how he's ended up as a pet owner, but, well, this creature followed him, so, what's he to do? If it follows, then it follows, and well, he'll throw it some scraps, because, what he's to do? He's a very strict master. Don't even think about peeing outside of the designated area or licking other people. (you can bite strangers, that's fine.]

Default is owner, if pet he would be a rebellious one and probably would try to stage revolution because he would not stand of being subservient to another.

He's a fluffy white dog with a curly tail and one flopped-over ear -- a purebred abandoned as a pup for this perceived imperfection. Nevertheless, even as a stray he's desperate to be wanted by someone despite being awkwardly socialized. ]

He's been getting anxious, now, so the familliar sound of steps is really a huge blessing. He knows that Master doesn't want to have him always at his side, even during the war... but there is a war, a huge one, even across time and space, and so, every second not at Lord Diamond's side means that if something happens, he can't fight at his side, can't protect him.

He kneels and bows the moment his Master, Lord Diamond, enters, the moment he can see him.

"Welcome home, Master. I pray many scions of the White Moon lay dead in your wake."

And I pray you take me to slay them next time is what he doesn't say, because he's his Master's loyal wolf and his own wants mean nothing. Time will come for his own usefullness to his Lord and Master will come again, certainly, anyway.

[A student owning a pet person in their dorms!? ... Well, yes.
That's allowed at a big shot academy like Hope's Peak. And Angie's a big shot student there - the Super High School Level Artist, of course, is allowed to do basically whatever she wants under the guise of "inspiration for her art".
Because Atua told her no normal pet will do, after all!

And so, that is how she came to adopt a forty-fucking-feet long snake-person. Who is, in fact, a snake. She got him as a rescue... something about being distant and lashing out?
How can someone be distant and also lash out? She dunno, man, but she also doesn't care. She thinks he's pretty, like a fresh brushstroke on a canvas - dark, pretty scales that shimmer like ink. Very nice! So pretty!
And Atua likes him, too! Probably?

Today, she's caught him sunning on a chaise lounge by a window in her dorm; pulling a wagon full of supplies behind her. Paints of all colors, the brushes necessary, cups and jars of clear water...]

There was a small amused smile on Diamond's face at the sight of the wolf. "It is good to be home," a place of refuge away from Esmeraude and Rubeus. These two fought like cat and dog every chance they have and when sometimes it was entertaining the rest was simply annoying.

Ungloved fingers tilted Mitsun' face up, he was scrutinizing the pet's appearance for signs of trouble. "What were you up to during my absence?" As a master Diamond was a fair one, his pet gets all the freedom he wants as long as the wolf behaves himself. He didn't begrudge Mitsun having his fun and if Esmeraude broke a nail or two when trying to enter his apartment in the palace uninvited... Well, that's why Mitsun was here. He knows she could escape before being mauled to death and some flesh wounds are the price of trying to ambush him in his own home. She might be a cousin by blood but it doesn't give her carte blanche to disturb him anytime of day.

[Taako is a pet! What kind of pet depends on whether you've owned him for a while, or if you've just picked him up. Either way, this time he's a cat-- a long-haired tortoise shell tabby! He's got a fluffy, luxurious tail and ears. (He always has a sheath dick when I write him; barbs on it are available by request??)

If you've owned him a while or are getting him from a nice breeder, then he's a spoiled shitty cat who crawls all over your stuff and demands attention as soon as he wants it, and will drape himself over your hands to make you stop doing anything that isn't touching him.

If he's a stray, he's still pretty, but he's a bit more aloof and wary and will take some affection and bribing to win over. He still craves affection just as much, but he's shittier about it and probably knocks stuff off your shelves and breaks it to get you to pay attention to him.

I'll be real, I'm mostly in this for the all sex/heat/games prompts, but I'm open to others!]

[Pets have never done it for Axel. He's one of those advocates for the rights of pets everywhere... Even if he's not public about it. Hell, he's even a vegetarian. But that's out the window now.

He's brought one home. How could he not? Those stray dogs were going to rip the cat to shreds in the alley next to his apartment. He fought them off and dragged the clawing, hissing, stupidly heavy pet into his home, so there's HIS good deed for the day, as far as he's concerned. Now he's just ignoring Taako, sitting in the shower and trying to sanitize these scratches he gave him. At least the dogs didn't manage to bite him, that'd be a hospital visit for sure.]

[Taako is, meanwhile, a pissed off lump in the corner, his long hair a mess strewn all over his head and his ears folded back, flat against it. He's angry and horny and scared half to death, and some rando just dragged him off to his apartment, and he doesn't like any part of this.

He's curled up tight in on himself, his tail wrapped around him and eyes narrowed and glaring out to keep a watch in case Axel comes back and tries to approach him.]

[After a few minutes, Axel tucks away the iodine and heads back out. The cat hasn't moved. That's... he's not sure if it's a good sign or not, really. At least he hasn't left?

Axel sits on the couch in the middle of the common room that makes up his kitchen, rec room, and dining room, and glances at Taako before flicking on his old, crappy TV and finally speaking.]

(As a pet he's either a cat, a ferret , or even a snake. All versions are light grey/white in coloration, and I'm cool with anywhere on the furry scale from ears and tail only through full quadruped with unsettlingly humanoid face. In fact for snake person I'd prefer to go a naga/lamia direction.

Depending on how long you've had him (and how you've treated him) he can be anywhere from an extremely aggressive ill tempered pet, or incredibly loyal, although True Bonding is restricted to canonmates, (would kill for a Leo, Corrin, or Camilla as owner, but any of his marriage options are also good). No matter what his current situation is he started life as a stray, and probably bounced around between several abusive owners who either ditched him or he escaped from. Open to all except pregnancy.

As an owner he's not actually an owner, but somebody who does the 'pet care' FOR an owner. Can be in charge of breaking a pet, training, cleanup, heat management, whatever you can think of. Alternately, he's a pet thief who either works to liberate pets and get them to areas that have 'free' provisions, OR just sells them on the black market, your choice for what tone you want.)

[Taako frowns, curling even further in on himself...

... but Axel keeps a respectful distance.

After a few seconds, he picks his head up a little to look at him, ears picking up a bit.]

Why'd you drag me to your shitty apartment?

[Axel laughs a little at that, just a chuckle. At least Taako's responding.]

Yeah, it is pretty shitty, isn't it?

[As for why he dragged him to his apartment, he's not totally sure of that himself... But there's no reason to be dishonest, so he might as well say what he is sure of.]

If I hadn't, those dogs would have torn you apart.

[Taako opens his mouth to counter that, and then he actually thinks about it.

[And then he falls quiet again, remaining in that corner by himself.

For a long moment, he's still there, other than the occasional wriggling, shifting, trying to get comfortable despite his current... situation. After a short while of just listening to the TV, however, he huffs, and unwraps his tail from himself, hiking his skirt up over his hips; he dips down, his joints surprisingly flexible due to his being a cat, to lap at his unrelentingly hard cock and the surrounding area, unsure what else to even do about his discomfort.

He needs to mate.]

[He's heard about this, from friends that have pets. It's apparently supposed to be very uncomfortable for the pet, an owner's job to deal with it.

... Admittedly it also explains why those dogs were attracted to Taako. Well, shit. This day just got a whole lot more complicated.]

[Taako stops short, glancing up at Axel, his tongue still poking out for a second. When he pulls away, it becomes abundantly clear that... yeah, that definitely seems to be the case.

His face flushes beet red when he's called out like that, though, his ears again folding flat against his head.]
