The puppy is a gift from Eponine to keep him busy and to get him to see the sun more than once a week. He'd grouched, but ultimately appreciated the gesture-- it was hard to resist a pup that was so cute, after all.

So he's taking the dog out for a walk in the park, not paying attention to any of the others about. He's not here to make friends, after all.

At least until the puppy shakes out of his grip and starts bounding towards a young man doing some kind of work under a tree. Grantaire really hopes it's not important stuff, because the puppy has definitely just gotten a bunch of it to scatter.

"Mojito! Get back here." He's already a little winded from sprinting after the dog when he catches up to the puppy now gleefully rolling in the grass, "--I am so sorry about that."

He's even more sorry when he properly gets a look at the young man and damn, the universe really has it out for him. Of course he finds a good looking young man while sweaty and gross and after his dog has messed up a bunch of paperwork-- Not that he imagines the universe would ever have let such a handsome person be interested in him, but, well.

It's a good thing he's still catching his breath from bolting after the dog, because it makes it less obvious that the sight of him takes his breath away.

Yes, Henry, Archie is well aware that you're busy studying. Archie has also been rather busy studying himself. But everyone deserves a study break, especially people that won't take one, and so you'll have one (1) Dad figure tapping on your desk in the library.

The way he waves his hand to get the younger man to come with him doesn't brook no argument, necessarily, but it's rather insistent.

[Recovery was a slow process.

Days would meld together and tick by so slowly that Bucky would temporarily lose his grasp on time. It's a side effect, one of many, but the words are gone and he's a free man. Steve had come to take him somewhere else, but T'Challa convinced them both to stay nearby for a few months, until they were sure if those side effects were going to be permanent or not. So they found themselves in a small well-appointed house a few miles from T'Challa's compound. Still in the jungle, but with privacy and peace. Relatively speaking.

He could hear the busy marketplace from one of the windows in his bedroom, even at night. He hated that Steve had to do all the shopping and remind him to eat, to bathe, to breathe sometimes when the nightmares were bad. Bucky was stuck inside his own head and he didn't know how to get out. There was so much he wanted to tell his best friend that he couldn't. His lips wouldn't form the words no matter how hard he tried. T'Challa's doctors had begged him to be patient, but it didn't help.

Bucky, frustrated and admittedly lonely when all he wanted was to be able to talk to Steve, slips out that window and heads to the market. He thought a walk might help. It's late and he knows Steve is out in the living room, waiting patiently for him to come out or to need him. He could get some fruit and take it back, show Steve how much he appreciated him without having to say anything at all. Bucky's halfway down an alley, the marketplace alive and buzzing at the end when he hears it. A meow. Then another, small and coming from a tipped over box behind a dumpster. Bucky bends down and carefully rights it, ushering the small balls of fur back inside. They've been abandoned, he can tell by the weak sounds they make and how filthy they are.

He takes every one of them and goes back to the house, climbs in through the window and slips soundlessly into the bathroom. Bucky bathes each one slowly, six in total, and as he's drying off the last, it happens.]

Kitten. [From his own mouth. He'd said it. After all this time and it all it took was six furballs.] Kittens.

[With a fresh towel, he wraps them all up carefully and moves towards the living room, where he's met with the back of Steve's head over the couch. Bucky knows he'd heard him moving around, in the bathroom and probably even leaving, but Steve doesn't push.]

Steve, kittens.

[Abruptly, he's on his knees in front of Steve, setting the towel full of kittens in his lap. The fact that he's speaking after all this time will come as a surprise, but Bucky's more focused on the animals.]

It's a complicated moment, to be sure.

On the one hand, it's incredibly frustrating. Case briefing isn't difficult, but it's a slog. On the days when Combeferre forces him to go outside to get some actual sunlight and breathe some actual air, a lot of care has to be taken not to let wind shift things around. Those careful protections are, alas, absolutely no defense against a skittering puppy.

On the other hand, for a few seconds, his lap is full of gleeful puppy. That's not terribly easy to be upset about.

His face is likely stunned more than anything else as his hands abandon their fleeting grip on pages of notes to help corral the cheerful animal. Someone is calling out and running at the corner of his gaze, so keeping the creature from bolting off further seems like the responsible course of action.

"It's--"

In the grand scheme of things, it's fine. In the grand scheme of things, a bit of casual interaction is probably actually quite healthy. It' just that, in the immediate moment, his notes are starting to blow away.

"--shit."

What's already close by is easily grabbed. The rest will have to be chased down with a furrowed brow.

[Patience has never been one of Steve's virtues, but he's trying hard for Bucky's sake. Knows that it has to be more frustrating for Bucky, trapped inside his own head, than it is for him. He's been quietly googling videos on sign language, wondering how to persuade Bucky to try it. Even if he can't talk, they can at least communicate somehow.

Probably Tony could figure out a better way, but Steve's doing his best not to think about Tony. He has more on his plate to worry about right now than a broken friendship, especially when he can't do anything about it from Wakanda.

Steve hears Bucky slip out, but he stays in the living room. He tries to give him space when he needs it; it has to be hard, depending on him for so much. Bucky always was independent - even more so than Steve himself - and now he's broken, a wreck of a man, barely able to perform simple tasks. Unable to talk. If he wants to prowl the streets by himself, then Steve's going to sit here and watch Wakandan TV and pretend that he's not imagining what could go wrong while Bucky's outside.

But he comes back without any apparent issues, and Steve assumes that the running water he hears is just Bucky washing up before bed. Not that either of them have anything like a normal sleep schedule, but they try to keep up appearances. Routines, he assumes, will help Bucky remember.

-And then, suddenly, Steve finds himself with a lapful of kittens, and Bucky's kneeling in front of him, and-]

Buck, you talked. [A grin spreads across his face, and if it wasn't for the kittens, he'd be hugging Bucky right now.]

It takes a heartbeat longer than usual to follow. Henry trusts Archie infinitely. He trusts that Archie wouldn't be interrupting his studying if it weren't for something important.

Still. It takes a heartbeat longer than usual to finish writing down his thoughts and get to his feet.
