The Unpopular Opinion Meme

THE UNPOPULAR [RP] OPINION MEME

You ever feel like you're the only one? Maybe you're not. You can always commiserate with someone else!

≈ Comment logged in or anon.
≈ Spill your unpopular opinion or confession, as long as it's rp-related. That means stuff about canons, plots, etc.
≈ Rant, vent, and all that good stuff.
≈ Be cool. Being a dick for no good reason is not the point.

Shipping two male heterosexual characters together.

In media fandom, heterosexual characters and couples aren’t typically reduced to only their sexuality or only issues of their sexuality, like gay people are. Again, the problem is not in finding it hot or not about being able to ship what you want, it’s about reducing things down to being solely about their homosexuality and automatically forcing queer perceptions onto things (even without any basis) because you find queerness hot and have decided they should NOW KISS. And forgetting that characters are characters beyond their sexuality.

IA with this, but I'd include female characters as well.

the sexy

I know it's silly, but... Not all muses can be sex Gods, guys. Really now. I know we all want our muses to be "awesome" during sex, buuuut what about being realistic? There has to be at least some awkward times.

Especially when people are writing an anal scene and they don't use lube. Do you realize how much it would hurt if there was none? I mean unless your muse was THAT loose and if they were I would feel sorry for them -_-

It's sometimes painful to read always perfect sex - no lube, no condom, no personality I guess. I like the awkward stuff! It makes the characters more endearing to me, idk.

But I guess it all comes down to people's preferences for writing. I like the build up, the relationship, and etc. The fumbling times, the 'oh god where's the condom' times, the times when something random happens and there's a pause in the middle of sex and both people laugh.

You know, like real sex! :D

The closest I ever get is allowing them to have a sexual encounter. A fling. But I rarely ever ship to heterosexuals together. Further, they have to be close enough to be comfortable with that. Otherwise I avoid it.

Obligatory medium divide complaint.

People who complain about getting tagged by characters whose character info isn't on their journal.

Guess what, your characters are strangers, it doesn't fucking matter who you're tagging!

I wish crossover memes took off. I hate playing with castmatess most of the time.

HONEST OPINIONS

If you have the guts, post your name and who you play, and some anon will give you the non-sugarcoated truth.

Or they'll ignore us entirely.

Shipping

(Anonymous) 2012-02-04 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll ship anything. I mean it. Straight characters as homosexual. Homosexual as heterosexual. I don't ship it for the sex or whatever. I ship because I find the personality dynamics in that specific relationship interesting. It doesn't matter who, if I think they can have an interesting--although not necessarily healthy--dynamic, I'll ship it. /Shrugs

Realistic sex is fun! As is failtastic sex, the "...and then life happened" sex. Some of the most entertaining sex scenes I RPed are fail!sex scenes. Too drunk to get it on, lover's spat...

Re: Shipping

(Anonymous) 2012-02-04 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree. And I'll explain why:

It’s not about deciding to ship two characters just because they have dynamic, it’s about shipping two people without regards to their sexuality, and therefore without regards to a strong portion of their personality.

Sexuality is not fickle, even for characters. It's like a name. It can't be changed, esp. in the long run.

Again, the problem is that I (and others) have seen people go from shipping things to seeing any two characters near each other and deciding to ship them because the person who sees them finds insert-sexuality-here more attractive/hotter/cuter/romantic than the canon sexuality, and taking the new ”sexuality” for their own entertainment. Rather than seeing sexuality as a part of the whole they’re making it the majority of a person. Sexuality is not for people’s entertainment. Characters shouldn’t be reduced to just their sexuality, and they shouldn't be subject to changing sexuality because the person finds it entertaining/dynamic/sexy/etc.

Related to this, it irritates me that mingle memes are always fandom specific with no space to mingle and get to know people outside of your fandom too.

Who the hell only wants to get friendly with other people who play the same damn character they do?

Every time I see people linking the "mid-fuck" meme I read it as "mind-fuck" and get all excited for nothing.

So I guess I want less mid-fuck (like... not every week) and more mind-fuck. Or just less sex memes in general.

Yup.

I could try to explain it to you, but it would obviously not be worth my breath. Just carry on pretending that your ignorance is profound wisdom, since I'm sure that's what you'll do anyway.

I disagree with this to an extent. People are going to have their preferences, and sexual preferences are not something that can be ignored. But, sexuality is not something that is 100% set in stone, especially not for historic characters. The notion of "heterosexuality", "homosexuality" as we know them did not come into effect until the 1800's. Before that, things were a good deal more complex. I am NOT saying that people are not more (or even exclusively) attracted to one gender or another, but that things are not that black and white. Even more recently, studies such as the Kinsey report show that even self-identified "heterosexuals" may have a sexual experience with another gender.

I agree with you that sexuality should not just be for someone else's entertainment. But in the right circumstances, SOME people can end up with a gender that isn't of their traditional orientation.

I feel like the only person who wants to play out a bad relationship in a game. Like, it starts out good and then it just deteriorates into fighting and then eventually they break up.

I'm in a developing relationship in a panfandom RP now but I'm putting off asking her if we can develop it into something that won't turn out to be perfect. :/

Let me reiterate: I was talking about characters whose sexuality is obvious, or characters that in-canon, show no affection beyond casual to insert-sex-here.

Characters in which its purposely open to interpretation is granted, as long as the sexuality isn't trumping over in-canon facts.
