    Let me level with you here--for all the goodness and love of the world, there is an opposite: complete and utter disdain. The world seems ever so unfair. Money money money, unfair unfair unfair, evil evil and yes, more evil. Everyone hates something, be it metaphysical or physical, whether that person has good reason or incredibly trivial reasons for hating someone, the emotion is the same.

    It's not cynicism. Hate is a part of life and it has every right to exist. And just as someone can do something wrong out of love, so too can someone do something right.

    (Consulting someone about hatred can be cathartic, after all)

    Maybe someone is confronting someone with their darker passion, admitting to their flaws. And maybe the hated person admits it's okay. A man knows he can be hated. A true man knows why he has good reason to be hated.

    Or maybe it's not just a 'hate' thing--love and hate are two sides of the same coin, as they say. It is wholly possible to hate 'and' love someone at the same time. Very possible, indeed. (Tsunderes owe their entire existence to this principle, usually by denying the 'love' part).

    Or, last but not least, it really is just undiluted, angry red dismissal. This girl/guy pisses you off. Whatever action taken, it's out of the heat of the moment, the passion of black contempt for another living being. You really EFFIN' hate somebody.

[Resentment towards Clint had mostly just been a side effect of the general dislike of his oft-partnered red headed companion. Until the Avengers, until Barton took down a great many of their coworkers. Sure, it wasn't his fault, necessarily. That didn't stop Maria from side-eyeing him on occasion, and making sure he was assigned to some of the rookie missions.]
