"But we do," Charles said softly, catching the small motions of Kurt's hands but for now, keeping his to himself. "It comes with life, but you're right. No one should suffer, but that's what we fight for. To keep as few as possible from suffering. I'm not the optimist who believes it's possible to have a bright, shining, perfect world, but we do as much as we can. That's why you're wearing this." He reached and tapped the leather of the uniform.
Which was why he brought the X-Men to existence again at all, because they could do something. Because they were needed. It still hurt, he believed their deaths always would, but he had pushed it to keep going. Now? Now.. parts of him wanted to break down but there was too much, there were people, relying on him unlike the last time when there was nothing left.
