Judy was more than familiar with feeling as if you constantly had to prove yourself, constantly needing to be the best so that no one would doubt that you deserved to get what you had. She could also relate to never actually shutting off your "work" brain.

Nick had reminded her that there was more to life than being the best police officer ever, and that sometimes you just have to calm down and have a bit of fun (even if their opinions of fun don't always align), and now she was going to do that for Steve.

Well. She was going to try.

So Captain America got dragged out of the city by five feet of muscle and enthusiasm to visit the Hopps family farm, and after being mightily fawned over by everyone and served a giant lunch, Judy took him on a walk to give the poor man a break.

It was a lovely autumn day, and she took him to one of her favourite spots to build a little fire, revealing the bag of homemade vegan marshmallows she'd been hiding under her jacket.

Seated next to him on a blanket, she glances from her roasting marshmallow to him with a smile.

"I think at least four of my siblings have crushes on you now."

Say what you will about Artemis Entreri, but he always has been and always will be more than happy to take his luxuries where he can. And for a man with few indulgences, a cozy, well furnished, clean inn room, after weeks on the road, is about as luxurious as one could get.

It's only when he and Legolas are safely within their new room - locks checked, secured, each nook and corner checked for any nasty surprises at Artemis' insistence - that he can bring himself to relax again, shedding pack and travel cloak and allowing himself to finally feel some measure of peace. It's too rare a commodity these days, it feels, and for all his gruff and bite, he's happy for the few days of peace that they can get.

"We're going to need supplies in the morning," he says absently over his shoulder, letting his sore and tired body sink down on the edge of the soft bed. Such a welcome change from hard earth, and for a moment, he's ready to let sleep take him right there. "Food, at least. Directions. Kobolds prowl this area, if I remember correctly, and we'll waste less time if we don't have to cut through them all."

If only physical relaxation meant he could relax his mind as well. But his mind remained sharp as ever, a necessary habit he could never let himself break. He runs a hand over his face as he thinks of what else they would need, and frowns at the thick stubble catching under it.

"We can ask the innkeep to bring a bath up as well." He's long since accepted the fact that a clean shave was a battle he was never going to win, but this? This is too much, even for him. He scratches his jaw with visible annoyance, reaches for a small, plain dagger at his belt as he continues, "If you'd like. We have more than enough coin for it, and I know how your kind is."

Maybe it was never going to be easy. Perhaps it wasn't possible, given the barriers facing them that he worked to destroy and others put up faster than he could manage. Places could be rebuilt, and the school had been, but the damage that had been done to who mutants were as a whole would take a lifetime to repair. Things had been getting better... and thanks to En Sabah Nur and indeed, Erik as well, that was not only ruined, but worse than it ever had been.

There was a great deal of weight on his shoulders, but today found him in the library, which thankfully was blessedly quiet for a time between classes, and very much asleep. It wasn't exactly something he had meant to happen, but given a somewhat unpleasant night might have been inevitable. Really, he didn't even remember the book over his eyes at some point, but it was a moot point compared to the dream that was gliding through his subconscious. The image of an endless plane of smoke and soot, something that smelled of charcoal and fire but remained dark. It shot through with blue, a passing quicker than the eye could register but the mind saw like an after effect. It happened again and again, the timing arrhythmic and surprising. He tried to breathe, but it was choking as he tried to call-

His mind shifted that darkness, pulled it to somewhere else, leaving him trapped within his own body, staring up into the depths of the pyramid as he fought, he fought, but everything he put in its path was torn down-

The smell of brimstone, a puff of sound, that cut through the ragged raw not-sound of power that came from-

A bloom of fire in his spine, then nothingness.

It wasn't a pleasant dream, despite the silence of the library and the golden dust motes that hung in the sunlight pouring in. Despite everything, sometimes even his powers got the better of him. It was part of why he understood Jean so well, why he tried so hard to help her despite the fact he knew someday, perhaps already, she would far ellipse him in power. That cry into the smoke perhaps had been less internal than expected.
