Flynn peered around the doorway, and seeing no one in his immediate view, darted through and let the glow of the library vanish as the door clicked shut behind him. He held up the thaumometer and twirled on the spot until it dinged softly and led him down the nearest aisle. Eyes locked on the screen, barely managing not to bump into everything in his path, he worked his way down the rows of boxes until the screen lit up with a swirling happy rainbow when he held it up to the cardboard.
"Aha," he said quietly to himself, flipping open the lid and extracting the little wooden cube. He turned it between his fingers, pocketing the thaumometer, and examining the four squares on each side more closely. It was rather like a Rubik's cube, if two-by-two instead of three-by-three and disappointingly uniform in colour. No symbols, even, to clue one in if you were getting close to the right configuration.
"And just what are you trying to hide like that?" he asked it aloud.
