This has nothing to do with being 'prepared for offensive things online'. It's about just plain wishing that The Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory wasn't so grounded in truth. Placing the onus of responsibility on the party that has no way of predicting when/where they're going to encounter something they don't want to? That's just a way of saying 'I want to be an edgy twit where there's no real consequences, hee-hee, and it's the internet so it's okay to be offensive and these other people don't matter it's their fault anyway!'. Seriously. Does that make any logical sense? 'I'm going to be an ass because I can, and everybody else just has to deal with it'.

And what the hell happened to empathy? The thing that separates normal people from dangerously unstable psychopaths? The ability to go 'huh, I don't like it when someone's being an insensitive asshat in regards to something that's a big deal to me, why would I be a jerk like that?'.

I think it's serious bullshit that the laws of social interaction and politeness that the majority of people follow in their everyday life doesn't carry over to the internet. If it's not something you'd say loudly in a public area, don't say it publicly online, either. The internet is not some magical land populated by constructs and computers typing themselves.
