The Train to the Afterlife Meme

Congratulations: You are dead.

Maybe you know how, maybe you don't. Perhaps the memory is fuzzy, or perhaps it's crystal clear down to the look in your comrades' eyes. Maybe it was your time; you've done all you wanted to. Or maybe you weren't at all ready to go, maybe you went out kicking and screaming - but none of it matters. You know you're dead, and the train is taking you to an afterlife. Perhaps an afterlife of your choice; you might've earned that heaven. Or perhaps you've earned something else entirely.

It'll be a bit of a journey, though, so you might as well take your time and talk to the other people in your coach. Death knows no place: most of them are strangers, even from faraway worlds. But death knows no time either, so who knows, some of them may be people you know, even if last you knew, they were alive - or long gone.

Oh look, here comes the snack cart.

All the usual:

Post with your character's name and canon in the subject line.
Said character is now dead for whatever reason - canon, AU, what have you. They are on a train with other dead people from many other times, places and worlds.
Characters don't know for a fact where they're headed - just a general awareness that they're going to some kind of afterlife. Whatever they think it is is up to the player.
This meme is built especially for cross-canon interaction, and potentially for threadjacking and group threading - if you're interested, may be a good idea to state as much in your subject line.

[This is...actually pretty nice.

He didn't expect to even get this much.

How bad can death be when there's a snack cart? Not to mention nicely comfortable seats.

Loki actually seems okay with being here. He makes sure to grab a window-seat, and will occasionally wander to entirely different sections of the train just to see if the view is any different. After all, it's a nice train, but he is curious as to where he might be going. Occasionally, he doesn't think and winds up putting his feet up on the seat in front of him. Feel free to tell him to cut it out if it's yours'.

And he'll occasionally approach an interesting looking individual, offer a bag of pretzels, and ask with what might be considered slightly disturbing casualness from a child:] So. What are you dead for?

[Because in death, maybe people will finally stop caring what his name is. The boy does like people, generally. But in life, most people didn't like him.]

[So, this was...probably inevitable, all things considered. And, from a certain point of view, long overdue.

Still. Kind of a shame to go out to a sniper's bullet when there are giant metal robots that exist. Even that didn't kill him right away, but, well, the efforts to save him had been rough enough that Steve had been relieved to finally slip away.

Even in death, the shield is still on his back. Kind of a relief, really. He's almost forgotten life without it. Whatever comes next, Steve knows he'll be prepared for it.

For now, however, he's just got to find a seat. Which is harder than one might think. It's a very crowded train, so Steve's got to pace the aisles a bit. Hopefully he doesn't block the way for anyone.]

[The gigantic man looks quite shell shocked, quiet and staring at the gas mask like helmet in his hands.

After a while of silence, he suddenly perks up with some soft, hesitant laughter.]

It's... [His sentence is interrupted by his own giggles, which break into a full, joyous laugh.] It's over! At last!

[None of the old songs or stories mentioned a train.

Loki is well past caring, though. Frankly, he's relieved to finally be dead. Especially given the ultimate circumstances that led to it. They were...somewhat gruesome. Pain would have been an improvement. Death was the release he'd always dreamed it was.

And the train was a welcome respite from all of that. A place to catch his breath and maybe get ready for whatever might be coming next...however unpleasant it might be. Though Loki didn't fear Hel as much as many other Asgardians did. Valhalla wouldn't have suited him to pass eternity in anyway.

He sat, looking out of the window, occasionally reaching out to munch absently from something out of the bag of some snack or other he'd been passed from the cart. When someone sat down next to him, he didn't so much as twitch.

He did, however, speak.] So. Where do you think you're going?

[Michiru Kiryuu has been sitting very quietly and observing people when she's finally approached by someone - he probably can't be too much younger than she is, though that's up for debate. She was created to look 14, after all, but she doesn't remember how old she really is.

She doesn't bat at eye at the casualness, instead eyeing the dark haired boy for a moment.]

I betrayed my father and died protecting my friends.

[She'd never been one for lying, after all.]

[She remembers fading away while her friends screamed her name. And she was sure that would be the end of it - becoming one with nature, all of that. She'd never been truly human, just a person made from darkness. Surely she'd return to it, just as she was always meant to.

So she doesn't expect to suddenly be on a train.

It's filled with unfamiliar faces. Michiru watches them for a while, wondering what brought all these people to the same place.

She doesn't see her friends or her sister. That's a relief, at least. As the train keeps going, she turns to the closest person.]

Where does this train lead?

[ emma doesn't think much about her death, it's easier that way. all she knows is that she left her family, her town behind much better. it figures things turned out this way. you don't get stamped 'the savior' without realizing you're going to have to make the noble sacrifice someday. she just didn't think it was going to be so soon.

the man pacing has caught her eye more than once. she's been on the fence about waving him over to the spot beside her. the idea of giving up her solitude was her only hold up. but eventually her conscience gets the best of her and emma finds herself trying to catch his eye with a hand wave. ] There's a seat next to me.

[You didn't see her because she was wandering around the cars. Having retrieved half the snack cart's worth of bread, Kaoru approaches and frowns.]

Good for you. I'm assume he heartily deserved betraying?

[He would certainly buy it, if that were the case. So the question is asked with curiosity, rather than any judgment. He doesn't remember much about his birth father - there was some memory scrambling that had to happen to make him who he was - but what he does remember leaves the boy quite glad of this.

He offers up the pretzels again with a questioning look.]

Hm? [Steve looks around at the wave, finally spotting Emma. He brightens when he realizes that she's offering some relief.] Great, thanks. [And without further hesitation, he takes the seat next to her, pausing only to unsling his shield and stow it in the luggage rack overhead. No point in crowding her, after all.] I feel like I was trying to catch a bus to work all over again.

[ Completely inevitable. With that bomb strapped to Striker's back, it covered the escape pods.

What else was he supposed to do? ]

[ she watches him stow the shield in the luggage rack with curiosity, it's not everyday that you see someone with a shield like that. dead or alive. but she doesn't ask anything about it. ]

No, problem. Who knows how long this ride will be so everyone might as well have a seat. [ she's also kind of glad for company. at least he seems like he'll be good company. ] That's what I thought of too, trying to catch a bus at rush hour.
