When the two of you were young, you were inseparable. You played together, dreamed together, did absolutely everything together. A day without the other was unthinkable. Other people joked that you two were a pair of little lovebirds; what they didn't know is that they were absolutely right. Of course, it was the kind of innocent love that only children could have, but you were in love.

Then, life got in the way. Things changed and the two of you may have grown apart. Now, you've finally come back together and fortune's smiling as if it may be just like old times.

But that can never really be, can it? That familiar innocence is replaced with something much more adult. Will your relationship change with the times and the new urges, or will you both cling to the past? What if only one wants to take that next step while the other wants to keep memories pure?

It's always been one-sided, right from the start. As kids, one of you followed the other around like a puppy over the moon. The other wasn't cruel to the person crushing on them, yet they didn't see them in that way. Maybe their admirer was kind of an ugly duckling or a late bloomer. Maybe they were just the kind of kid who wasn't interested in icky, gross romance.

All that's in the past, because after a long separation, you two have met back up and, man, has the late bloomer finally bloomed! They're exactly the type their once-object of affection would go for.

Surely this is a dream come true and now they can get the returned feelings they've always wanted!

[I have a modern!d'Artagnan...?]

It had been ages. But d'Artagnan would know that face anywhere. They'd closed too many bars back in the day to be forgotten. Of course, they'd gone in different directions, but here they are. In a bar again.

And a beer finds its way in front of Jim Kirk and it comes from a smiling d'Artagnan a few people down.

[sounds good to me!]

Jim smiles at the bartender good naturedly, taking a deep breath, ready to deny the random a roll in the hey, but when his eyes locked onto that face. His best friend growing up, his confidant, his, well, they were inseparable. He must look like a fish out of water with the way he is gaping at the other man, before his face lights up in excitement, grabbing the beer and coming over and occupying the vacant seat next to d'Artagnan, sick slightly shocked.

"Still trying to pick up people way out of your league I see." he starts in with the teasing, like they had seen each other last night instead of last decade or however long it had been.

"I learned from the best." But Jim's not the only one whose face is lit up. d'Artagnan grinned, too, throwing an arm around his old frined. "I can see it clearly worked for you."

"Damn right you did Dart." he grinned hugging him tightly, more affection than he really shows, well, to anyone. "It could work for me, I just have higher standards than some people I know." he chuckles, winking at his long lost friend. "What are you doing here?"

"Heard you were on leave? And since I have so much free time," came the laughed answer. Jim's impulsiveness had rubbed off too. Or that would be the story d'Artagnan told. "I figured I'd know where to find you."

"In a bar drinking away my demons," he chuckled taking a swig of said beverage, "Well, I am a Kirk." he laughed. He was silent for a moment, just staring at his friend. "I can't believe you're here."

Something in d'Artagnan's face softens before he looks away, down at his beer. He coughs out a laugh. "Should I offer to help you break a few hearts, shorten the life of your liver?"

"Don't break hearts anymore, I'm Captain now, I have to be an example or some shit." he chuckles, "beside if Bones has to endure me bringing random people home night after night, he's have my head" he laughed. "Liver's fucked though, we can always shorten the life span of that." he chuckled. "Are you here alone, are you still with that..." he was going to finish the sentence, but Jim and the D'Artagnan's partner had never gotten along.

Thanks for poking at that scab, Jim. Nice. d'Artagnan rolls his eyes. "Her husband didn't quite take to us." Threatening to kill himself was, even to him, a bit extreme.

"Alas, it seems I'm all yours for the evening." But he snickered, adding, "an example? An example of what? What not to do?"

[God damn if he isn't glad to be back in town. It's been too damn long since he left, and too damn long since he's seen Cas. They'd been close, nearly inseparable growing up, but time has a way of distancing things. College, jobs, lives, preoccupations got in the way and before either of them knew it, years had flown by.

And now he's back, from outer space. Everything he owns is sitting in an apartment in the part of downtown he hasn't seen in a million years, and he couldn't resist sending Cas a message asking for a meet up.

Where else but the diner with the best pie on this side of the mississippi? When he walks in to find Cas already waiting for him, he can't suppress the his grin and his pleased laugh.]

He-hay, buddy, look at you all stubbly and grown up. Tie and everything, get right the hell out.

[ Of course they haven't seen each other in a long time, and of course Dean would want to meet. Castiel can't say that he's exactly comfortable with it, unsure as to how to proceed but finding himself telling the other man when he's free and asking where. He doesn't know what to think when he walks to the diner, a quick five minutes from where he's currently employed, and he's absolutely clueless by the time he slides into the booth and waits.

When Dean shows up, there are far too many things to focus on at once to ease his thoughts, and the comment, as always, distracts him from the greeting he would have given him. His face scrunches just a little in response. ]

That would defeat the purpose of meeting you. [ Castiel shifts from his seat to stand then, idly smoothing the tie that he wears, and he tries offering a slight smile. ] You look well, Dean.

[In the heart and exuberance of his enthusiasm, he doesn't immediately pick up on Castiel's serious lack of it. No, he's too busy leaning in to give the other man a firm hug, accompanied with a nice, manly slap on the back. Because he hasn't seen Cas in fucking forever, and there he is, alive and looking...

Awesome.

He huffs a little at the response, sliding into the booth opposite him.]

I know, right? I look fantastic.

[He agrees, grin twitching a little.]

No, but really- where you been, man? What've you been up to?

[ooc: SO what this probably will involve is a first meeting after many years. Emphasis on the first meeting for Kat, because she won't even remember them. I'm open to whether or not she had feelings for them at the time they knew each other or not, or.... really I'm wide open on what her past was like because it's not stated in her canon, she just doesn't know. F/m and f/f both cool, and I'm fine with cross-medium if you are. Not super comfortable with smut though.]

"You don't need lessons in that, you were always the one getting us into trouble." That may have been because Jim was absolutely enamored with the guy, even as a kid.

"As I recall," d'Artagnan noted, one eyebrow raised, "it was you who thought up stealing those motorbikes that one time. I was just the one who had to haul your arse over the barbed wire."

"I thought we agreed to never speak of the incident. Like ever." Jim laughs, eyes crinkling in remembrance. "I still have the scars, from where your 'hauling' failed." he says, lifting up his shirt and running his finger along the scar which happens to be over a couple of his very well defined abs.

"Oh, yeah. That." d'Artagnan reached out, running a thumb along that scar. "Not my fault you entirely lacked arm strength," he snickered.

"Still an asshole I see." Jim chuckles, throwing an arm around his friend. "I could take you now, and even if I would lose, I have a fancy security team to back me up." he laughed winking.

"Oh, yeah, big bad Captain of the Enterprise, I know." d'Artagnan's arm loops an arm around his waist - they're both nearly off their stools at this point . "That probably lets you cheat to win. Don't think I don't know all your tricks, Kirk."

There's something conforting and unsettling about being so close again, as if something's there, just below the surface. Again.
