[ The first time Groot jerks his leg free, Peter pulls back, startled; he curses, thinking that he had fucked it up somehow, and just caused Groot more damage. Rocket was going to murder him. It’s only after squinting at Groot’s face that he notes that his expression is less pained than before, and Peter figures he must have done something right. Heartened, he goes back to work on the second leg.

Once Groot is cut loose, Peter replaces the knife and slowly sits back, propping himself against the fallen rubble. He returns Groot’s smile with one of his own. ]

I think that was a thank you, right? Welcome, I guess.

[ He does his best to focus on Groot, assess him for more damage. He doesn’t seem too badly off, to Peter’s untrained eye. And Groot’s bounced back from the brink of death – Peter figures he can certainly bounce back from this. For a second, he lets himself think that things might not be as crappy as they look.

The notion is quickly dismissed when he hears the groaning of metal above them, and a smattering of dust rains down in their little cavern.

While he had something to focus on, something to do with his hands, he could ignore the aches and pains of his body. Now, though, the throbbing is back, and he forces himself to breathe through it. His head falls back to the slab he’s sitting against, and he’s mindful of the injury there. He crosses his arms tightly over his chest and lets his eyes slip shut against the brightness of the room (imagined though it may be), gritting his teeth and clenching his fists whenever there’s a particularly sharp pulse in his head. ]

What do you think, Groot? [ And his voice, strained as it is, has a bit of his customary lightness in it. ] Can you dig us out?
