In the past, weddings and marriages were simply business contracts to bind family and property together. Though that remains in some cultures, weddings in the modern day tend to be a time of joy, commitment, and looking forward to the future. That is, of course, if you're the one getting married to the person you love. But what if that person is getting married, and you're the one on the outside looking in? Maybe they left you, maybe you didn't know a good thing until it was gone, or perhaps they were forced into marrying someone else.

That decision is made, and the only one that remains is this: what will you do?

HOW TO PLAY
- Comment with your character and preferences. State whether or not you want your character being the one married or the one crashing the wedding - the default state, and for best results, is characters being able to do both.

[roy knows it had been his call. he was the one who ended things with raleigh, but...at the time, he'd thought it was the right thing to do.

roy's job was dangerous (being a vigilante never carried any guarantee for his safety), and after raleigh's identity was exposed as having some connection to arsenal, it would've made him a serious target. roy thought raleigh already was a target, and he couldn't let himself put the man he loved at risk over and over.

he knew raleigh hadn't wanted it to end, and neither had roy, but...he'd figured it was for the best. raleigh would be safe and alive, and-- in the end, that was what mattered to roy.

a couple years passed, and roy slowly started edging away from working as arsenal. he'd...taken some serious hits (bullets in the chest, to be more precise), and after surgery to remove them, he hadn't been quite as agile, quite as geared towards fighting the good fight -- or whatever it was he was doing.

he'd finally looked raleigh up, because it had been so damn hard being away from him, and maybe it was selfish, unfair of him to hope that maybe they could...try again, but roy just couldn't help himself.

he hadn't, however, expected to find an engagement announcement for raleigh and some girl roy didn't even recognize.

raleigh's getting married?

how the fuck is that even possible?

the date that's been set is happening soon, and roy's curiosity (and probably even general jackassery) gets the better of him, and soon he's in raleigh's city, looking up information on the wedding -- where it's happening, when, and he decides that...well, he's going to be there.

either raleigh hates him and this would have been meaningless anyway, or he'll get something out of it -- maybe not a second chance, but at least an opportunity to see raleigh before he's officially married off.

...yeah, this is pretty fucking selfish.

but nevertheless, roy can't quite talk himself out of it as he shows up at the venue. there's guests everywhere, and he blends right in, slipping past the other people, down the hall that's supposed to be for "wedding party only", but roy clearly ignores that.

it takes a little bit of navigation, but he finally makes it to the groom's suite (totally bypassing the bride's, because he's not there to talk to her). he approaches the door where he knows raleigh is supposed to be getting dressed, getting ready for this day, and roy almost chickens out.

raleigh must be happy if he's marrying this girl, right?

what's roy's damage that he has to ruin this for him?

[ He’d never wanted it to end. Roy was the person there when Raleigh needed him most, he was there when Raleigh came back from Pitfall, waiting by his hospital bed and he was there when Raleigh had his nightmares, when he suffered from his bouts of depression and anxiety that stemmed from long-term PTSD.

Roy was Raleigh’s everything.

He’d fought it countless times, called Roy’s phone, showed up at his house, begged and pleaded – but Roy had been adamant. Raleigh had been hopelessly, irrevocably in love with him, and Roy had completely shattered his heart.

So he’d tried to move on.

He met Jenny O'donoghue through a mutual friend, a contact he’d had from the Shatterdome years ago and hell, she was pretty, blond hair and green eyes (they reminded him painfully of Roy). She’s young and vibrant, a sweet girl that lost her father in the war and takes care of her mother now that he’s gone. Raleigh does love her as much as he’s able to, but they both know there is a darkness to Raleigh that she doesn’t know how to deal with.

She tries, though. God love her, she tries. Raleigh’s been living with her for about six months now, dating her for a year or so and they’ve got a cute flat in downtown, an inviting place that isn’t so bad, but Raleigh kind of hates the city.

He’s gone back to construction since it’s really all he knows and she runs a tiny little scrapbooking store and between them, ends are met.

It’s not a terrible life – it’s just not the one he wanted.

He stands in the groom’s suite with his hands in his pockets, completely dressed in his tux, staring out the window. The ring set feels like a lead weight in his pocket, a pretty Claddagh design (Jenny was fond of her Irish heritage) and simple white gold accompanying band.

It feels like a fucking stone.

And it’s not necessarily that he doesn’t want to marry her, he just…doesn’t want to marry her.

Five years after Pitfall and Raleigh still has reflexes like a Ranger and the moment Roy steps in, Raleigh’s turning around. ]

[well, raleigh still recognizes him, at least. roy has't changed all that much; he keeps his hair long, never really gotten over that scrawny thing he's got going, but there's a hell of a lot more scars he's carrying around, and while the ones before were much more mild, these have done a fair job of tearing up his body.

all tucked neatly away under the soft blue button-down he put on to try and blend in. he knew he'd look too weird showing up in a t-shirt and a baseball cap.]

Well, at first I was here just to, y'know, say hi to you. But now I'm crashing a wedding, apparently.

[his grin is sheepish, because this really wasn't how he expected their reunion to happen. he's...glad raleigh moved on (it would have been unfair to expect him not to), but he's still insanely jealous that raleigh's about to stand at the altar with some girl and promise to love her for the rest of his life.

[ Raleigh's mouth is hanging open and he's...not exactly smiling. He's staring in open mouth shock, jaw working to try and form words, but they won't come. What Roy is saying makes no sense, and the shock of seeing him - after all this time of Raleigh trying to get over him, forget he ever met him, get his face out of his dreams, he shows up now?

On Raleigh's wedding day?

He has half a mind to punch him in the damn nose. ]

[his smile is apologetic, but now really isn't the time for jokes.]

I left because you were gonna get hurt, Raleigh. You were a target because of me, and you were going to get hurt, or just fucking killed. It was a hell of a lot easier cutting contact and putting distance between us to keep you safe.

[he sighs, combing a hand back through his hair.]

I'm still sorry about the way I did it, though. ...and sorry for showing up today, I know this is kind of a big deal for you.
