Anime Romantic Tropes Meme

Anime has some unique tropes when it comes to romance, perhaps because of the setting or the culture in which the medium comes out of. However, these days, some of these conventions have become familiar and prominent - both in anime focusing on romance AND in the more general fare. This meme is for playing out those in all their wonderful, strange, romantic, touching, or sometimes over-the-top and cheesy elements.

By no means is this meme only for anime characters or for characters in Japanese setting. Everything here is generalized enough to apply to just about anything. I would love to see any sort of character here, because come on. No matter what you play, you have to love some romance.

re back together, and the dynamic is totally different. This also often involves a "childhood marriage proposal," where the naive party promises marriage and the other takes it seriously.
Love Note: The note you left the object of your affection might be a bit passive, but you can't confess face to face!
You're Like Family to Me: The two of you have been close forever, so you've never seen each other like that...until now.
Tsundere: G-geez, idiot, it's not like I like you or anything! I was just worried...worried, okay? Don't make me slap you!
Kuudere/Ice Queen (King): I have no interest in things like "love" or "romance." They are the least important things in this world.
Yandere: You don't like me anymore? How...? Oh, that's alright. I'll make you LiKe Me.
Unlucky Friend: You lost the person of your dreams to someone else, perhaps because of their allure or perhaps because you never spoke up. What can you do now?
Red String of Fate: That person? You know you're totally meant for them! So what if you've never talked? You have the red string of fate!
I'll Cheer You On: Always supportive, always by your side, they're the person you can count on. Why do they care so much, though?
Harem: One guy. Lots of girls. Craziness ensues.
Reverse Harem: One girl. Lots of guys. Craziness ensues.
Head Patting: Apparently a great way to show you care, both for dogs and for humans.
Indirect Kiss: Your lips touched that. Their lips touched that. OH MY GOD IT'S LIKE YOU KISSED.
Slap-Slap-Kiss: I could kill you for what you just did! I could - I could KISS YOU.
Confession in the Heat of the Moment: You're about to go defeat the ultimate baddie. How about confessing your feelings to the person you love? Seems legit.
Food for Thought: I made you lunch. Want to share?
Repaying a Debt: You broke a vase, ruined somebody's priceless something-or-another, and now you have to be their servant until you pay it off!
I'll Be Your Dog: Or you don't owe that person anything, you just wait on them hand and foot and hope they'll appreciate you one day.
The Kind of ____ You Like: You want to change yourself to the type that the object of your desire wants.
One-Sided Love: Sadly, still a trope here. As always, a heart will be broken. But maybe, just maybe, the love isn't unrequited. Maybe the other person isn't aware!
Jerk/Sweetheart: The pairing of a stoic jackass and a manic pixie dream.
Misunderstood Delinquent: You're not what you seem. You just want to give flowers to that cute girl, not run her over with your motorcycle!
Fight for You: I won't lose the hand of my girl/guy to the likes of you!
Sudden Kiss: Kiss from nowhere! There are lots of reasons for this: to stop someone from crying, to make them be quiet, or just to explain yourself when words can't.
Kiss on the Forehead: It's a sweet way to say "I love you."
Physical Difference: Usually size difference - and then, it's usually big guy/tiny girl, though big girl/tiny guy is explored as well - though this is present in a lot of different ways.
Class Difference: Again, sometimes common in western fiction, but anime is made in a culture that is still greatly stratified by class, whether it be wealth or power structures.
Oh, My Goddess!: Uh-oh, you accidentally summoned an angel/demon/alien/god/goddess. And now they're bound to you forever! But at least you can stay just friends...or something like that.
Teach Me To Become Human: A robot, an alien, a god, a demon, or anything beyond our human knowledge wants to know more about our emotions - from you and your love.
Single-Gender School: For all the yaoi and yuri fans out there, don your uniforms and remember that Maria is watching.
The Silent Protector: In love with his/her charge, but never able to act on it.
The Perfect Waifu/Husbando: They are so graceful, so lovely, so kind, you've really lucked out!
To Make My Beloved Happy: You will do anything for the person you love, even if that means not being with them.

[ Oh, there goes Yata again. Better make sure she's around to encourage him. Of course, he's so cool that he doesn't need luck or her to say something, but she'd like to support him and this is really the only way she knows how. He probably won't fall over or trip or anything, but she has a small first aid kit with her in case he does.

For now, she's content watching him from a bit of a distance, occasionally jumping and waving her hand while saying embarrassing things like that's amazing or do that again or no one can beat you even though he's... alone... And apparently someone has taught her the word senpai which only makes that name of his even longer. ]

[ It only takes one specific word to shatter all of Rydia's delusions and distract Yata enough to take a misstep while training. The fall isn't so bad; he scrapes his knee and his cheeks are either red from the heat or the embarrassing barrage of encouraging words, but other than that, he's okay. Yata-senpai still rings in his ears as he gets up and gets the dust off his knees. ]

Who taught you that!?

[ Because he did trip as soon as he heard senpai. He can't help it. It's too weird. Before tripping, he was doing pretty good with the new moves he was taught, considering himself lucky to have someone cheering him on. Of course, Yata, being the showoff he is, also wanted to impress. Looks like he got more than a little careless with that. ]

A bit of background: Kisa is 30 years old, but he looks like he could be in high school. He identifies as 100% gay and falls for men based on looks alone. He has never had a serious relationship because of this, so he doesn't think serious relationships are possible.]

[ OTA! She's a princess, so 29 is a possibility. Not interested in 22. Everything else is fair game! ]

[ They'd been drawn from their worlds to fight a war and somehow they had almost succeeded. The many people she'd met had been a blessing and a treasure trove of information and experiences that Gracia did not hesitate to breach, asking questions after questions that came to her mind as she sought understanding of worlds beyond the only world she had ever known.

Tomorrow would be the final battle. That meant she only had one day left -- just one day left to spend it with the people she'd come to live with and like.

Now that it was close to midnight, the campfire in the middle of camp was close to empty with many having left for an early night's sleep or to meet another person in privacy under the full moon. ]

After tomorrow's battle, we'll all be able to see our friends again.

[ Gracia claps her hands together, delighted, turning with a smile on her lips. ]

Isn't that great, Yata? You'll be able to see your king again soon!

[ These cold nights around the campfire could never compare to the warmth HOMRA meets Yata with, but this fire and the people who gathered around it were just as good as any other comrade. They were good, not enough—that would be a disservice to them. Yata glances at Gracia before his eyes settle on the glowing flame keeping them warm. ]

Heh, yeah. I'm looking forward to it! [ He chooses not to think of what going back home truly means. It's too much, so he turns a blind eye. ] Mikoto-san and the others, I wonder how they're doing now.

[ The distance between him and Gracia has nearly closed up. Just a few more inches and they'd be sitting shoulder to shoulder. There is another distance he'd like to close between them, but no. Now this was enough, or so he tells himself.

The openness and comfort he feels around Gracia prompts him to speak again. ]

...You know, I've never really thought about that stuff before. Back home, Kusanagi-san'd tell me what I needed to do and I'd be like "Aight, got it!" but I'd run off on my own all of a sudden and do my own thing to finish the job. Never thought about the consequences, like dying or—or never seeing HOMRA again. I just did it. It's the first time I've thought "I wonder what Mikoto-san's doing now?" or "I bet Kamamoto's stuffing his face with burgers again." Hah! He probably is.

[ The physical distance between him and HOMRA is strange, is what he's getting at. It won't be long until he reunites with them, but somehow, leaving this world will also be painful. ]

But hey, you'll get to see 'em, too. Your friends, I mean.

[ Her delusions still remain fairly intact. It's clear that he was just doing something extremely complicated and something distracted him! It was probably a baby animal or one of those really amazing smelling food carts. She could understand that happening. She might even falter on a spell if she saw either of them.

Instinct kicks in and she rushes to him but keeps something of a distance -- just enough that she's not in his personal space (thank heaven for small favors) and she looks up at him, twitching her nose. ]

You mean "senpai"? Isn't that what you call people that you think are really cool and to cheer them on?

[ She hung around Moe Moe enough to hear it. Sure, it was almost always directed toward Rin, but it made sense. It was easy to glean that information and put two and two together! Normally, she'd huff at showing off... but Yata wasn't like Edge. He wasn't trying to charm his way into her bodysuit (and the pants and skirts and whatever else of every other woman in a ten mile radius at the same time). Plus, this was really cool... ]

Are you okay, Yata? You're not bleeding, are you?

( It was part of their deal! He would teach her something and she would show him what she learned when the time came. So far, they'd learned rock throwing, cooking, fishing, how to manage camp finances, how to pick non-poisonous berries, and the art of war... some of which were (obviously) more successful and interesting than others.

He's beginning to run out of ideas to teach which is why today, he tries to buy some time. )

Hmm... What do you want to do today, Nowi?

( You would think it would be harder to find a distant wyvern rider that made a point of avoiding other people but it was never very hard for Lucina. It must have something to do with that whole masked enigmatic time traveler experience they share. She finds him exactly where she expects to (where ever that is). There's a brief smile (she's rather pleased to have found him again even after his lengths to not be found) and then she looks much more serious-- formal, even. Back straight, head up, eyes forward, addressing him directly... )

Gerome.

( ... And something behind her back. )

[She's found him at the training area they had designated for their camp at the moment! Some other Shepherds are about, but Gerome and Minerva had chosen a clearing some ways away from them.

So being approached by her is a bit of a shock to him, and this seems to be a matter of utmost importance. Gerome dismounts from Minerva, sliding himself to the ground as his wyvern tosses her head and rests on her belly and arms.]

Lucina. [He approaches her, curious.] How do you fare? You seem troubled.

[ Spoiled, princessy tsundere girl who's a big mushy cuddlebug on the inside. ]

( It is truly a matter of utmost importance! So important, she's spent hours rehearsing and practicing to herself, making sure to get everything just right before she approached him. But maybe she over did it. She looks startled by the comment. It was never her intent to make him worry. )

I'm well. ( Ah, yes, she definitely over did it. ) Do I? Forgive me... I assure you, all is fine.

( And she's still doing it. Inigo told her about this. Cynthia too. She needs to relax! Relax... relax... Breathe in, breathe out, and attack! Just like mother and father would in this situation. Wait, Lucina, this is a normal conversation between friends not a battle. )

This is for you. ( And she brings her hands out from behind her, presenting a black butterfly mask similar to the one he gave her before she departed for the past. ) Robin and I found it together in the Outrealms. I'm afraid it's only wood but I'd hoped it could make up in part for the one you gave me.

[That answer would have relaxed him entirely if not for the uneasiness that hovers around her. He eyes her through his mask, as if her worry were something that could be explained in her expression and he just hadn't placed it, until she whips out the mask.

Oh. Gerome looks visibly startled, his lips peeling open, but his eyes are right on that mask. He reaches for it, bringing it from her hands and closer for him to inspect. If he wasn't wearing this mask, he might get a better view... He lifts his gaze back to her.]

I-I was only glad to offer you my services in lending you that mask. Compensation was hardly necessary. For any cause of yours, I would have- [Nope, he's going too far.] ...You didn't have to do this, Lucina.
