There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.

Everybody knows about them: love triangles. Or, as they may be, love lines - some characters fall for those who just have their attentions elsewhere. Whatever the case may be, it's just painful. They're not into you the way you're into them, and it's always hurtful to be in that sad state, pining away.

But it doesn't always have to be that way.

Maybe there's somebody who cares for them the way they care for the objection of their affection. A dedicated friend harboring secret feelings? An admirer from afar? Someone who's always supported them? It's someone they'll never see if they can't open their eyes and notice what's in really front of them...and move on.

This meme is for that moving on, those "second choice" pairings. It's for growing and developing and learning that we can't always get what we want, but sometimes we get what need. It's not for first loves; it for last loves. Perhaps not even love, just something better than unrequited desire. And, of course, it's for people who want to play those kind of pairings in a meme setting, having their character getting over their pointless, unhealthy love and get someone better, whether it be serious, crack, cross-canon, AU --- anything goes!

How to Play

Comment with your character and preferences. You may want to include whether or not your character is more likely to be the spurned/rejected or the "second choice"/admirer. Include any other information you find relevant, too.
Don't feel relegated only to canon positions! If none of this applies to your character, make things up. What makes sense with their personality? What do you want to play?
Comment out and be inventive. This is open to all sorts of everything, so don't be afraid of doing a crossover with plenty of juicy backstory to it; ooc talk is fine, too.
Since this meme is so freeform, there are no prompts to box you in. It could go in so many ways! However, here are some directions to inspire you and get you started:
- Rejected by the ever elusive object of affection.
- Cheering up someone after their rejection, complete with angsty thoughts of "oh, why don't you see me?! I'm the one who really cares!"
- Wondering if you should divulge your feelings.
- Confession
- Realization
- Deciding to give someone new a try.
- Proving your love.
- "I won't be your second choice!"
- Dating and other romance.
- Obligatory smut direction.
- Friendship rather than romance.

[She was beginning to think coming to the party was a bad idea. She'd managed to stay in her own little space, however, paying special attention to her drink as the night went on. Her mind, and her eyes were occupied, though. Every so often, they would wander over to the sphere hunter who was also attending. From ex summoner to gun expert. She was ever amazed at the growth Yuna had gone through. The only thing that killed her, was the fact that she barely even noticed her. Sure, they were friends, but for Fang, it was just a bit more. She had dealt with it. She was good at putting on a mask. Besides, Yuna was happy. That's what mattered right? Even if it tore her apart on the inside. She'd never thought to tell her, assuming it would just crash and burn. It was better to just stay quiet and let it pass as unrequited...right?]

[Yuna was dressed in her cutest Santa Christmas outfit replacing her shorts with a red skirt trimmed with fuzz, her top with a red halter top, and completing the outfit with a Santa hat. She spotted Fang almost instantly and waved happily at her friend.]

FANG!

[As she waves she wobbled already slightly drunk from the merriment or the punch.]

[Shit. She didn't want her to have noticed. Then again, the girl was cheerful to a fault, even if she weren't drunk. She jumped at the sudden greeting, gritting her teeth painfully before hiding behind that familiar mask. The ever patient and warm smile.]

H-hey, Yuna. You alright there? You look a little...unsteady.

[Yuna smiled, red in her cheeks.]

I am fine! This party is a lot of fun. Its a same that Tidus isn't here, I feel like this is a party he would enjoy.

[Smile through it. Smile through it. Even if it hurts to hear his name. She looked away, scanning the room for an escape. She had to get away, or it would hurt too much. There was no way she could tell her.]

Yeah. Maybe. How-- [Don't even ask. You don't want to know.]

How is he?

[Yuna got noticeably less cheery even though she still had a smile on her face.]

I really don't know. I haven't seen him for awhile. Its like he vanished.

[Trying to stay happy Yuna looked over at Fang.]

I am surprised you asked. Didn't think you liked him much.

The Shinra Headquarters company-wide New Year's party is always a lavish affair, but only seldom a very jolly one. Even if individual departments have their own celebrations, it's expected that everyone attend the larger one, to mix and mingle and generally network within the company ranks. It fosters a sense of community, upper management insists, and serves to help people connect no matter what their rank or position is. On this special day, station (supposedly) ceases to matter, as everyone joins together to share goodwill and hope for a better and brighter new year to come.

Lexaeus quite appreciates the sentiment. He appreciates the excellent catering, and the beautiful decorations, and how friendly everyone strives to be as they put their best foot forward. But if he's to be painfully honest, he doesn't know anyone in the company who actually believes any of that rhetoric. It's too big and formal to foster true warmth, too impersonal for genuine intimacy to be easily obtained. There's simply too much at stake for those lower on the totem pole, as they try to impress their superiors, and the superiors try too hard as well, trying to seem common and approachable.

Ah, well..... if nothing else, it serves as a means to visit with friends he's made in different departments, whether that be with R&D, SOLDIER, the normal guards and police, or even the maintenance crew. Lexaeus has already made the rounds to inform all interested parties that he'll be remaining sober, and available to drive people home if needed; he'll keep an eye on them, just in case any unfortunate incidents happen this year. It wouldn't be the first time, after all, or the last..... But as long as they can be caught early enough for damage control, everyone should hopefully be able to make it through the festivities with their reputations intact.

He likes to keep an eye on everyone, actually, more than he likes to talk; he's caught up in conversations here and there as he meanders through the party, but he's not usually this social. He's not even usually inclined to stand out this much; to his typical Turk suit, he's added a set of cuff-links and a tie pin, set with a small piece of cut and polished amber. But no matter what, in the end, you always had to look out for your own..... Lexaeus finds himself drifting back towards familiar fellow black suits eventually, spotting Elena first. "Good evening. Are you enjoying yourself?"

[That got her attention. She worried. She looked worried. Furrowing her brows, she tensed her shoulders, then relaxed, looking away again as color creeped up over her face.]

I really don't...but you do, and it isn't my business.

(Most likely the spurned lover because he cares more about taking care of those around him than himself. And because getting him to confess feelings like that is nearly impossible, so his chances tend to pass him by since the object of his affection is never told.)
