[Princess please]
[princess]
Sollux Captor | Homestuck | OTA | Commoner, Servant or Knight
[Really it's up to whoever tags what position he's in.]
[ Young lady Knight, open for any pairing or prompt! ]
[ooc: Princess / Hiding out as a commoner]
[ooc: Would you mind if I tossed this lady in here?]
[ooc: Princess/Knight]
[princess | knight/warrior | lady ]
[ooc: Thank you! I'm so pleased to see a Caspian out and about, too. I'm pretty good with anything at all, and I do so love to be surprised. :0D]
Someday, he'll be King.
Someday, Caspian will take his father's place--the place currently held by his uncle--and form the Tenth link in an imperial chain. Someday, he'll be able to stay properly among his people, spend his days focused on how to lead them better, learn more deeply what it is to love everyone in a nation at once.
But for now, he's simply a prince. He's in charge of nothing but a piece of reputation and a smile he's able to force to keep in place while he travels for good will in their neighboring kingdoms. He's gotten better at being alert and focused without Drinian nudging him between the ribs; at living the role of statesman instead of the quiet daydreamer he's always been on the inside.
It's a little easier when there's a prince or princess his own age to chat with--although he'll admit, Princess Margaret is a bit on the sharp side of things, which isn't so much bad as interesting to keep abreast of. It's much easier when there's something to do with himself beyond sitting and drinking--and really, jousts are a world of fun to be invited to.
He's certain she won't agree to it, but he's also certain he ought to ask on the evening before the tournament. "Milady, are you in the tradition of giving favours to your knights?"

The two of them share a similar situation, then.
Obviously, Margaret couldn't be King, but as her father has no legitimate male heirs, when the time comes, she will take over as Queen. And it's not as though it's a position that she doesn't want to have, it's that she's got so many responsibilities that she feels overwhelmed more often than not, and would love nothing more than to be able to just ... get away, if even for a little while.
So it's times like these that she relishes. Times when her usual schedule is interrupted, times when ambassadors from other kingdoms arrive, and as such, there were plenty of activities and feasts to attend.
She doesn't particularly enjoy being brought out and shown off as though she's some sort of ... prize, but that was the price to pay for being born into the life that she had been born into. She doesn't intend to be so short and sharp with this prince, but when her father orders her to make a good impression, Margaret, it's easy to do just the opposite. She knows very well that he's trying to make a good match for their land, and it's difficult, as she is almost too old to be considered good marriage material, despite her title.
So when he catches her the night before the joust and asks that question, she's surprised. Surely, she'd managed to kill whatever interest he might have had before meeting her. "I - no one has ever asked for one before."

It's better when Miraz isn't there to look sharply at him, to get that particular parental expression he's seen so often at the corner of this king's eyes whenever the princess is about. It's better when Drinian's let him off on his own for just a little bit.
It's better when he can feel, for a moment, like a person talking to another person rather than a prince talking to a princess--one pawn talking to another while they both struggle to make it properly across the board to where their crowns await them.
"Haven't they?" And there's a bit of a smile on his lips as he tilts his head just a hair to the side. "Are your knights more frightened of your tongue than an opponent's lance, Highness?"

It's so much easier to stand here and have a conversation without being watched like a hawk. It's nice to enjoy the evening without having to worry about being proper, and following so many rules that her head spun just thinking about them.
And it's certainly easier to let her guard down, at least a little, as if to prove that she's not all bad. She can be perfectly pleasant and friendly, at least if the circumstances are right.
"Usually, they don't ask because - ", and here she pauses, a pleased little smirk turning her lips up at the edges, "I'm right out there with them, beating them senseless. If they're afraid of anything, they're afraid of me."

He'll take a bit of an edge if it means an actual conversation. At this point in his circuit of their neighboring nations, he's glad for real responses to questions, no matter the edge in her voice or the smirk in her smile. So many of the other young women he'd met had taken the object of being shown off far too deeply to heart to get through even in quiet moments like this.
Of course there's a spark of surprise in his expression. Warrior queens aren't an unknown tradition in his own parts, but much of the world is far from in agreement with setting its princesses into that role.
"And will we have the pleasure tomorrow? Or have I ruined it by appearing to look for a wife?"

The longer they're able to stand out here and speak, especially without the threat of someone swooping in to eavesdrop, the easier it will be to almost completely drop her brusque facade. Despite being taught to be that kind of woman, and from such a young age, it's not who Margaret is. Above all else, she wants to be able to just be herself.
She was expecting the surprise - but the truth of the matter is that she can't stand sitting back and not being right out there with the men, front and center, training just as hard as they do.
But then her smile fades, at least a little, and she shakes her head no. "Unfortunately not. I have been barred from participating, as I've been told that it's completely inappropriate and unladylike, and I am supposed to be making a good impression."
