reasons: to obtain property, to unite families, to carry on a bloodline,
et cetera. Whatever the reason, congratulations, you're getting married!

POSSIBLE REASONS FOR MARRIAGE:
① Station → You come from a royal, noble, or otherwise distinguished family who has chosen a suitable spouse for you.
② Feud → You are being married to put an end to the bitter enmity between your two families.
③ Economics → Your economic state and/or your station will improve through the union, though one of you may be marrying down.
④ Empire → You and your spouse are merging your businesses and/or property to create something more influential or profitable.
⑤ Tribute → You have been offered as a gift or appeasement, alternately you're the spoils of war.
⑥ Bloodline → Carrying on your distinguished family name has fallen to you and the equally well-bred spouse of your family's selection.
⑦ Disapproval → Your marriage has been arranged to keep you away from the person with whom you truly wish to be.

[ Elliot tugs on the collar of his cravat in a gesture of nervous irritation. It's amazing that he's come this far without erupting out of fury or throwing the nearest chair on the floor, but despite his desire to do just that, he's still standing at his best attention. Anyone watching him would think that the youngest son of the Nightray family is bravely accepting his responsibility. Anyone who knew him well would think differently. ]

[ He looks across the long table at his bride-to-be. It's been five minutes already and neither obviously feel like speaking up. What an awkward silence........ ]

[A clock ticked loudly, over and over again, from it's perch on the wall. The girl sitting alone at the dining table - the large, suitable for a whole family, dining table - considered looking at it, but she thought she might throw up from nerves if she were to move too much.

Waiting to meet the boy you're supposed to marry would do that, after all. What was he like? Was he nice? Was he handsome? Charming? Did he treat people well? How about intelligence and hygiene? The only child of the Murasa family was no doubt all of these things; or he must've had a good few of them to his name, but it was extremely difficult not to fear the worst, right?

... Honestly? Ichirin considered sitting up and leaving, but she knew she couldn't do that to her family. Marrying into the Murasa family was a good thing, after all. They were a powerful family, and Ichirin didn't even have to be told that much. They sold boats, and they were damn good at what they did... masters of their craft. Or so people said.]

How can you even be great at something like that...?

[She huffed the question to herself, looking down at the shiny surface of the table.

Ah... should she check her makeup? Sure she was given some attention by her own family, but she hardly felt like a supermodel. Sadly, a door clicking shut behind her chair, and her heart trying to jump out of her throat, told her that she'd have to wait.

But. Should she get up? Should she bow? Or should she sit in her chair, almost shaking in panic and unable to move?

Yeah. Let's go with that last one.]

[unfortunately, it probably would've been easier for Ichirin if she'd just lowered her expectations. even by a little. just a little. Minamitsu is certainly no dashing Prince Charming. she isn't even a boy, for starters. being raised among shipwrights and sailors made her out to be rough and hardly lady-like, but she's still the Murasa family's daughter no matter how you look at it.

it was a bit of an odd decision to give her a wife instead of marrying her off to some other family's son, but what could they do? well, they could've had a son-in-law be the heir to the family business, but they tend to be pretty unorthodox in that whole traditions and roles thing. hence this whole... arrangement. they didn't even tell the Kumoi family that their daughter would be marrying another woman instead of a man.

details, details.

Minamitsu doesn't look anything like the heir of a powerful family is supposed to; she's dressed like she just came back from the docks (which is most likely the case here), in loose trousers and an equally loose shirt, her boots leaving wet prints on the polished wood floor. she's not nervous about the wedding arrangement, honestly. seriously. what's the big deal?

and- wow- her new wife looks pretty attractive. from behind, anyway. what a bonus.

a hand on Ichirin's shoulder and a casual greeting is enough, right?]

[Ichirin jumped at the hand on her shoulder, instantly remembering that she should mind her manners, jumping to her feet, spinning around and bow....ing?

Who the hell was this? She finished her bow, sure, but after she was done she looked more than a little confused.

Then she understands the situation, and sighs.

Did her fiance seriously send a dockhand to tell her he had been held up? He must be busy, though, so despite being annoyed she can understand.]

Uhm... sorry, is Murasa-san going to be late...?

[She'll be a king/queenmaker, looking to marry off her children into good homes. And really, who wouldn't want a bride or groom from House Addams?]

Well, I dunno where my dad is right now, but he should come 'round in time for dinner.
