The End of the Line Meme

Humanity spends way more time than is strictly healthy contemplating death. But right now, for our characters, it's really the most pertinent topic on hand. For one reason or another, your character is going to die relatively soon, and they know it. Face to face with their own mortality, characters are liable to do any number of things. So have at it!



How this works:
→ Leave a comment with the usual information in the subject line: character name, fandom. Any preferences, including what you don't want, should be included as well.
→ Tag around.
→ Feel free to roll RNG (1-7) if you cannot come up with scenarios of your own.
→ Have fun, and be excellent to each other!


1: ☠Terminal Illness☠ Cancer, smallpox, TB, plague, cholera, pick your favorite life threatening disease, and lose against it. You character has been wasting away, they're past the point of being helped, and soon they will no longer be with us. Perhaps the other players is a loved one, a friend, a doctor, or maybe a fellow patient, (terminal or not), who's there to see the doomed party to their end.

2: ☠Elaborate Plot☠ The spike walls are slowly closing in, or the pit is filling with water, the air is running out in your sealed box, the counter on that bomb is ticking away, the poison has hit your bloodstream, the sharks are closing in, etc. Somehow you've found yourself trapped or cornered, most likely at the hands of some nefarious foe, but not necessarily. Either way, try as hard as you can to escape, you can't. When do you give up, or do you fight until the end? For this one the characters can either be trapped together, or one could be out of harm's way trying to save the other, or gloating and savoring their imminent demise.

3: ☠So Much Bleeding☠ Wow that hurts. Like, a lot. Or...or maybe not? Y'know it's starting to feel kind of light and floaty, and it'd sure be nice to just close your eyes and drift off... For some reason your character suffered a grievous injury. Maybe it was in an epic battle with their nemesis, maybe they sacrificed themselves for player two, or maybe they're just really really klutzy and were running with a pair of scissors. No matter how it went, the point is that now they're bleeding out and have not long left in this mortal coil.

4: ☠Old as Balls☠ Even your wrinkles have wrinkles. You've been alive for like...ever. But hey, all good things must end, and now you feel that you're reaching the end of your rope. Are you a bitter, angry old geezer, or are you content with your life? Heavy with regret, or proud of your accomplishments? Are you saying a tearful goodbye to your friends and family, or maybe flipping the bird to an old enemy one last time? Maybe you're even reconciling with that enemy. Go nuts.

5: ☠To the Gallows at Dawn☠ Innocent or guilty, you are scheduled to hang/firing squad/lethal injection/be drawn and quartered/be decapitated. It is your last night. Chat with your cell mate? Try to escape? Bribe/seduce the guard? Tell your life story to anyone who passes you in the stocks? This one needs a bit more tweaking to properly be an engaging two person thread, but I have faith in your creativity.

6: ☠Final Curtain Call☠ This time, it's not just about you. The entire effing country/planet/universe/dimension is about to go up in smoke and everyone knows it. Break out the condoms and fried cheese, because this is gonna be one wild night.

7: ☠Overdue☠ Waaaait a second, you're already dead! Who would've guessed that? Well anyway, welcome to the afterlife. Maybe you're in some kind of celestial paradise, a torture dimension, or perhaps you're being a clingy fart and hanging around on your previous plane of residence. Finish up your business, or chill out and creep the bejeezus out of people. Your choice.

[The ceremonies had wrapped up the day before. Red mustered the courage to give a speech about his lover's life, all the things she had accomplished in her time on this earth. Things... were a blur after that. At some point, he had gotten home. That much he knew. Now, all that was left of her was a pamphlet and the ring he had done so many jobs to afford.]

[Red puts down the ring, holds his head in his hands, and cries.]

[It was a normal run, as normal as anything got in the middle of the apocalypse, anyway. Brady running healing all over the battlefield, with one of the others acting as a lookout. It becomes a lot less normal, however, when Brady hears Inigo crying out in pain. He's not supposed to show bias as a healer, not in times like these, when just about everyone needs it, but - but when he hears that, Brady doesn't think. He scrambles away from the wounded soldier he'd been working his magic on, rushing over and, with a furious cry, whacking the offending Risen in the face with his staff. It actually pays off, the unnatural enemy reeling back as Brady falls to his knees beside the wounded swordsman.]

Hey - hey!! J-just hold on, okay, I got ya! I'm right here!

[He's exhausted, almost at the limit for what energy he can manage into his healing, but he can't let Inigo die. Can't let him become one of those things. As much as they argue and bicker, they're still friends, and Inigo is still someone Brady would lay his life down for. He pushes past his fright and exhaustion, channeling energy into healing magic, but it's weak. Not only is he tired from all the work he did earlier, but the hit Brady dealt to the Risen damaged the staff, too.]

- damn it!! [He just pushes at it harder in turn. If he's going to beat the odds, he needs to work fast.]

[ This wasn't supposed to happen. His greatest fear was that he'd fail like this, make the wrong call, and now he had lost ally, a friend. Too slow. He'd been too slow to turn and defend Frederick, he hadn't been able to reach the knight in time, hadn't accounted on reinforcements from there of all places, hadn't though to try and... excuses. He failed, and Frederick is dying, and it's all his fault.

Robin is quick to reach Frederick and support him where he has stumbled, a Thoron hastily cast in the direction of the nearly-dead Risen chief. There is so much blood. ]

[Every battle is a huge gamble, with how dark these days are. There's the obvious threat of losing your life, sure, but with how powerful Grima's become, circling the world as he is, he's brought a new threat with him: the threat of falling to his whims, becoming his mindless pawn. Brady's seen it happen too many times before, people dying in the field of battle only to rise again seconds later and turn on their comrades, and the most horrifying part is that even the slightest injury could mean risk of becoming one of them. Grima only needs one wound to work his magic these days.

Which is, unfortunately, what Brady winds up getting. He misses a chance to dodge, gets grazed by a Risen's axe. The wound's bleeding, but not fatal, especially with Brady's expertise in healing. It doesn't matter, though. He barely has time to suck in a sharp breath of surprise before it suddenly feels like he's being dragged on, or like something is being dragged out of him, and he knows what that means.]

Lucina, ya gotta - go get outta here, before I - [He chokes on his next words, gives a wheezing sort of cough. He's getting weaker by the second, his life being drained out of him for Grima even as he still stands. And at this point, that's more thanks to his staff than anything else.]
