[Three-dimensional chess is a favourite pastime aboard the Enterprise. At some point or the other in their journey so far, everyone has tried at least once, with varying degrees of enthusiasm: only the tactical officers take an overt joy in playing, and only the medical staff rarely participate.

Spock, when he has time, plays as well, (to be honest, he prefers playing against the Enterprise’s computer, but he has learnt that companionship too, is logical.) with a methodical, almost ruthless precision. No sacrifice is made without the payoff becoming clear later on, no strategy employed without purpose. Each loss is turned into a gain, each attack carefully orchestrated. The opponent can be predicted and adjusted to perfectly. It is simple in its beauty, a harmony of patterns and logic.

Jim’s love for the game is not unexpected. He is a commander, and it is his business to know the minds of his crew. Without a doubt he is the most formidable opponent aboard the ship. However, there is a unique tactic that Jim alone uses, and it... annoys Spock no end. After another (rousing?) game, there is a hint of a thoughtful frown on his face as he attempts to understand why he lost.]

You cheated.

[Not upset; not accusatory. Merely a statement of fact.]

[ Jim had grown up with chess. As embarrassing as having a love for the game could be throughout school, he still managed to be treasurer of his high school three-dimensional chess club - of course it helped that the president was a girl he thought was incredibly attractive, and he had done it to impress her in the first place. Nonetheless, he had a respect for the game, the constant use of strategy, of trying to guess his opponents' moves five steps ahead of them.

He was pretty good, too. He knew the right strategies, knew how to counteract attacks, how to ward off enemies from his own territory. He either played it offensively or defensively: attacking his opponent head on, or taking the time, moving one knight here, the other knight there, lying in wait with his full arsenal prepared for the opponent to come his way. Truthfully, he had been playing against Spock for days and days, always trying to analyze the movements best as he could.

He had never once won a game, and he had decided to change that. A move reminiscent of the Academy -- protesting that he didn't believe in no-win scenarios, and he decided to change the rules. Upon moving his pawn to the top tier of their board, he'd changed it's moving patterns - letting it lay in wait until they were down to the few, precious pieces, only to move it as if it were a queen in order to corner Spock's king. Check, and mate. He'd managed to lock his opponent in and render him useless. ]

No, I didn't. [ Everyone knew the pawn rule, didn't they? Not that he had used it before, but it was an integral part of the game, a slight adjustment to make the odds in his favour. ] That's checkmate.

no worries i am slow on meme tags myself

It is not.

[Were he human, it would sound indignant. Spock remembers details precisely, with accuracy that can almost be called machinelike, and can recreate the entire game in his mind in order to analyse it, along with all possible moves and counter-moves.

He identifies the problem within mere milliseconds.]

You made an illegal move to order to do so.
