Who doesn't love a good carnival? The sights, the sounds, the...well, maybe not so much the smells. Going with your young siblings? Maybe you're taking your date for a good time! Maybe a friend dragged you along. Whoever you're there with, the important part is that you're having a good time!

1. The Midway!
Oh god, you want that stuffed unicorn so hard, it's just so incredible. Or perhaps you just want to show off to everyone else how AWESOME you are. Test of Strength? More like...Test of....Getting Owned With a Hammer. Whatever the reason, you're slapping down your cash and winning those games! ...If it's possible to win, that is.

2.Haunted House
PFFT! Who's scared?! These things are never that scary! ...Are they? That...That's not a real mummy, right? What was that sound?! ZOINKS!

3.Ferris Wheel
Did you ever wonder what the carnival looks like from such a high place? Or maybe you just want some alone time with your date. Do you find yourself thinking that this is a lot higher than it looked?

4.Fun House
What's so fun about it?! It's impossible to get through this stupid Hall of Mirrors! Agh, this tube is spinning, how can anyone stand up in this thing?! Wait, isn't that the same way you came from?!

5.Tunnel of Love
Awww, yiss. You're lookin' for a little bit of alone time, even if you are in a tiny, bird-shaped boat surrounded by shallow, dirty water. Or maybe your friends shoved you in before you had time to react. Have fun, love birds!

6.Carnival food!
Cotton Candy, corndogs, popcorn, ice cream, candy apples...! It's all so terrible and bad for you, but it tastes so good! You don't even know what that over there is, but it's deep fried and looks delicious in the most disgusting way. Be careful that you don't make yourself sick!

7.Petting Zoo
CUTE ANIMALS! You want to pet all of them! Or maybe the person you're with wants to. Though, whether the animals really want to be petted or not is another matter.

8.GRAVITRON!
Standing inside a giant ring that’s spinning at high speeds with no restraints. Yes. This is a good idea. Somehow. Hope you didn’t eat first.

9.Working
You’re not having fun because you’re WORKING here. Somehow, you got roped into this. Maybe you LOVE working here! Or maybe you’ve had enough of being in the dunking booth or wearing that doofy animal costume. Maybe your friends won’t laugh too hard at you.

As Kate handed yet another teddy bear to another excited little kid, she fought back rolling her eyes. God, she hated undercover work when it landed her working in a carnival. But they kept hitting dead ends in their investigation of the murder of a lifelong carnival worker, and this had been a last resort. Beckett and Ryan had drawn the short straws. She looked over to her partner, standing with her in the booth, then turned back to scan the crowd.

"See anything interesting?"

"No," he replied and his eyes were scanning the crowd as well, "but it's a bit hard to focus on finding evidence when trying to fake enthusiasm for a booth. Who knew being a carnival employee was so much work?"

To be honest, the problem was it wasn't hard for Ryan to keep up the smiles and enthusiasm with all the kids running around. His enthusiasm wasn't as faked as he would have his partner believe. So the actual problem was he kept getting distracted by all the happy faces and handing out prizes to excited little kids. He was such a softie at heart. His only consolation was that he wasn't working the booth with Esposito. Then he would never hear the end of it.

Kate had a feeling Ryan wasn't faking all the enthusiasm for the little kids, but she didn't say anything. She liked seeing him happy, and she liked seeing proof that their job wasn't completely depressing all the time. It gave her hope.

"I don't see how people can make a whole lifestyle out of this. I need more roots than that, I guess."

She paused for a moment to hand a kid some baseballs to toss at their milkcans, knowing he wouldn't stand a chance of knocking any over. The kid was totally getting a toy anyway. She moved closer to Ryan and out of the kid's pitching range.

"As far as undercover work goes, would you rather work with the Irish mob or carney folk?"

Ryan watched the kid as he threw the balls but it was clear from Ryan's expression that he was giving honest thought to the question posed to him. There were complications with an outright answer to that specific question, for Ryan at least, though he was well aware that most people wouldn't understand how it could be complicated; the answer was obvious from an outside standpoint.

The Irish detective knew he wouldn't receive any ill judgements from his fellow officer for indicating otherwise--they all had their one case that was overly complicated for them and only them alone--that didn't prevent him from going with the simple and obvious answer anyway when he finally gave one.

"Carney folk. Traveling could be fun, and at least most of the people here are happy. Most of the time."

Kate nodded at his answer, and when the kid threw the last ball without knocking over a single can, Kate let him choose a prize anyway. The delighted kid ran off to his mom and showed her the prize, and Kate fought back a smile before she turned back to her partner.

"Makes sense. The life expectancy is probably better too."

Watching the kid run off with his prize made Ryan smile. Unlike Beckett, he didn't fight it.

"Except for our guy," he replied as he glanced over at her with a sarcastic expression.

Kate examined the other carnies as they worked, watching for any suspicious behavior.

"Have you picked up on anything with the workers?"

Ryan's eyes darted over the same suspects Beckett was examining. There were a few that had popped during the initial investigative process but nothing definitive had come their way before they decided to try this angle. To further complicate matters, a few that hadn't popped were now looking worth investigating into further from what he'd observed. But still, nothing seemed concrete to nail anyone and time was running out.

"Nothing new that we haven't already gone over. But none of it is enough. What'll we do if we run out of time? Tip our hands and potentially loose the bet, or keep playing the game right up till the last call and hope someone slips?"
