INJURIES

1. SPRAIN: you stepped the wrong way, twisted the wrong way, and something has gone terribly wrong. Just remember. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

2. FRACTURE: You step off the sidewalk, working in the backyard, and suddenly BAM. but it's not a sprain, oh no, you're in a cast for the duration. Good luck trying to get to work.

3. PULLED It's not bad enough for medical attention but it still hurts something fierce. Break out the tiger balm or someone to give you a hand because you've pulled something. That awkward moment when you think you want vicodin...and nobody will give it to you.

4. MIGRAINE Light hurts, air hurts, moving hurts. All you can do is lie in a darkened room and pray for the pounding pain to go away behind your eyes.

5. THE FLU Maybe you're physically fine - well. All your limbs are working. You just feel like death warmed over.

SCENARIOS

1. INJURED! WHAT NEXT! You're out working, you're out having fun, you're out doing something when suddenly you step, twist, move and our bodies demonstrate just how fragile they really are. Quick! someone call 911!

2. THE EMERGENCY ROOM All the fun of a waiting room with rewards that include crutches, casts, X-Rays, vicodin, and sometimes just that one nurse who says "Yeah there's nothing wrong with you that'll be 400 dollars."

3. HOME AND SETTING UP THE NEST. Hurt, trying to make a space for you to get around. Hopefully someone is there to help you get to your crutches so you can go to the bathroom and make yourself something to eat.

4. PHYSICAL THERAPY HOME EDITION the obligatory smut option. Do you not see that I'm wearing this cast?

5. OH GOD HELP I'M GOING TO DIE That awkward moment when the fact that you are bedridden is crushing down on you and you're terrified you'll do something to make the injury worse. Snappish, angry, and rude - who are you going to take it out on.

6. DRIVE ME TO THE DOCTOR THIS SHIT IS COMING OFF It's time, they say you can come in, take it off, and begin the next stage of recovery. Will there be joy, laughter, crying, happiness?

7. ROLL YOUR OWN WILDCARD but don't roll too fast. Take the writer's word for it.

Nah-- let's have Amy be Rory's nurse this time.

[ Rory really should have listened when someone offered to help him roll a patient off of a gurney, but he had to do it himself. He is living to regret it with a terrible shoulder strain to his right arm, but a bottle of ibuprofen and a muscle relaxer has taken off some the edge of some of the pain.

He wasn't going anywhere, and he was literally on cloud nine from the medication he was given. Still, he was unhappy as he sat in bed.]

If things couldn't get any worse, no it would get worse if he came swooping in for a visit.

[ Amy is perched on the side of his bed, flipping through some magazine. He's alright- the injury isn't serious, at least- so she's mostly just amused by all of this now. Especially so at the loopiness the medication was inducing.

She cuts her eyes up to him, smiling subtly. ]

Oh, it's alright. If he shows up, we'll just leave you to rest here and I'll come back and tell you all about it.

[ Her words are quick, but her tone is fond and teasing. ]

[He gives the television one final glance, and he turns it off, with the remote going to rest at his side. Rory simply felt miserable, and the look on his face shows it.]

Wouldn't it be better to tell him to bugger off? [ He can't tell she's teasing or not. And, it doesn't exactly matter.] No! Wait! I'm sure he knows of some planet that could help fix this.

Is that right? Well, I know of a planet that can help fix that, too: Earth. Right now.

[ Yep. Definitely teasing, but she's twisting back to lean down and briefly kiss his forehead. ]

You're fine, Rory. You just need to give it a little time.

[ Rory just grumbles, seeing he can't fold his arms in protest at being stuck in bed. He does crack a smile at the kiss, it can't be all that bad can it?]

I'm not meant to be stuck here in bed. I'm meant to be out there working, I've got patients that need me. [Yes, he's going to whine like a child who didn't get his way.]

I think they'll be alright. [ It's okay; she's not too surprised. He likes to stay useful, and it has to be rough on him, being laid up like this. ] You've got a wife at home who needs you to not be injured, too, have you thought about that?

[ Amy just grins slightly, shaking her head as she moves to sift her fingers through his hair. ]

Why are you still awake?

[He takes in a deep breath, and he lets a frustrated sigh go. ] I can't sleep. [ He reaches his good arm out for hand and he takes hold of it.] I know this shouldn't be the end of the world, but it sure feels like it.

You're in bed with a pulled arm, and you feel like it's the end of the world. After everything we've seen - after everything you've done.

[ Amy squeezes his fingers with her, moving to stretch out carefully onto her side next to him, keeping hold of his hand. ]

You sweet, whiny baby.

Yes! Because that's where the humiliation part comes in, I know exactly what death feels like. This? This feels worse than death!

[ He's blowing this completely out of proportion! He continues to hold onto her hand, and he leans over the best he can to give her a kiss on the cheek. ]

I'm not whinging.

No, you're not whinging. You're bellyaching, and it'd be pitiful if it weren't so gosh-darned cute. [ Hey, they're alone, right? And he's hurt; she can afford to be affectionate right now, even as she squeezes her fingers into his hand again. ]

Now shush. Are you hungry? I can go get us some takeout.

Hah hah hah. [ Rory's voice becomes deadpan. He goes to roll back onto his back. ] Ouch! Dammit! [ He growls as he jars his injured arm. ]

[ The mention of food perks him a little bit. ] A little takeaway would be nice.

[ She makes a point of rolling her eyes again when he curses, but it doesn't entirely mask the expression of concern that flickers across her face. Her hand moves to stroke through his hair again; she's trying to be soothing. ]

I'll get takeaway and you'll decide which movie you want to watch, and then we'll come back and eat and sleep and you'll feel loads better in the morning. How does that sound?

Sounds great! [ He reaches over for the remote, and he flips through the channels. ] Please let there be a 'Die Hard' marathon or something good on.

Die Hard? Really? Again?

[ But she's amused as she stands. ]

I could put a DVD in for you, you know.

Yes, again. [ Rory gives a resigned sigh. Okay, you can put a DVD in. Do we even own any new DVDS?
