Who ever thought this was a good idea?! Aaron hadn't, Kay hadn't, but the approximation to playing life in the way they had had led to inevitable consequences. At least they'd had the setup to make way for this squalling stinkbag... and really, Aaron didn't actually loathe her all that much, it was just that right now, bouncing the infant up and down in the dark after being more or less trounced by a tired and therefore bearish Kay had left him less than amenable.

"Shut your fucking mouth," he sang quietly to the baby as he paced the room, child cradled carefully. "Go the fuck to sleep, little baby, unless you want your daddy to weep." He didn't have much rhythm, but that hardly mattered when the soothing quality of the voice was what he was aiming for. Eventually his daughter (it still felt strange to think of this tiny meatsack as being his!) began to subside, and he settled her into the bassinet at the side of the bed. She was still too small to be left in her own room.

Aaron collapsed into bed beside Kay, groaning, albeit with exaggerated care towards silence. "How many more years of this?" he murmured, exhausted to the bone.

I dunno, it's pretty little at the moment.

There was a stirring on Kay's side of the bed, where the elemental had hidden herself under a mound of blankets. "Which part?" came the barely-comprehensible grumble, only when Aaron had settled in close enough that she didn't have to speak up. "Waking up at night, depends on if she gets scared of monsters or not."

There were a lot of things in Kay's long, long life that had dropped by the wayside of her memories, things long forgotten, details too trivial to remember. The times she'd been a parent weren't, however, prone to that kind of flippant forgetfulness. Wholly apart from the parts of playing parent that she remembered fondly, years of sleepless nights had a way of burning themselves into one's brain. Among other things. "At least you don't have to play cow," she mumbled, already descending back towards sleep. Grab sleep when the baby does, after all.

"Ughghgh," Aaron groaned, though the noise had been muted into a rumble. "Shoot me," he complained, unable to quite fall back asleep again. "I want an off switch."

An arm emerged from the pile of blankets Kay had secreted herself under, and hooking around Aaron, she tugged him over, rearranging the blankets enough that she could squish his head to her shoulder. "Shhh. Shh," the elemental soothed, her own eyes still closed, in much the same manner as Aaron had been soothing the baby a moment ago. "Go back to sleep, or I will find you an off-switch."

At that, Aaron could only groan and laugh again... which set the baby off again. "I'll get it," he grunted. He set to soothing the little girl again, idly wondering about if he could foster her out to Fa some time when he went home... but that would be cheating.

By the time that morning rolled around, Aaron was not feeling too perky, but at least he wasn't planning on pawning off the little angel on an unsuspecting friend. He was putting on breakfast out of sheer habit and duty, given that Kay was responsible for feeding their daughter. Making decisions was difficult, but luckily, coffee was not a 'yes or no' question, but rather a 'now or after a murderous rampage' one. On went the pot to boil and drip... then on to the fridge to make more difficult life choices. "How's she doing?" he asked over his shoulder. Having a rocking chair in the corner of the kitchen meant that at least Kay could settle in and watch Aaron while he did his thing... but it also meant that the baby got dog slobberings, as Vanar been joyfully greeting them the moment they opened the door. Poor guy, he'd had to be booted out of their room once the kid came along, just in case he didn't get along... but he seemed happy to meet the girl whenever he was allowed to. Valkea, for her part, was sitting next to her food dish with impudent impatience, watching the trio by the rocking chair with some amount of narrow-eyed disdain. Aaron had a feeling that he'd have about three more minutes before she took to twining around his legs to kill him in hopes of more food.

She had subdued the ravening beast -- the dog, that is. The other ravening beast was still a work in progress. When Kay had sat down in the rocking chair Vanar had boosted himself up with his big dog paws with intention to lick him some drooly baby face, and had gotten enough of a reprimand from Kay that he now sat, attentive but contrite, and watched in apparent fascination as the baby got fed.

Kay had opted for the quick fix of a bathrobe rather than getting fully clad for this early hour, the easy access opening of the front allowing an easier time of things than a shirt might have. By the time she settled into the breastfeeding her eyes were drowsing again, though Aaron's question roused her enough to respond.

She cast a look down at their daughter, feeding. She was lean, as babies went, and long -- she'd inherit her father's height, no doubt. She also had a strong set of lungs on her that had seen a lot of enthusiastic use so far in her short life, but that were thankfully quiet at the moment with the singlemindedness of feeding. She was also never quite still, an active and restless baby, and even now was waving a tiny hand while she fed. "Full of piss and vinegar," she reported back to Aaron, a little grin on her face when she looked up to report as much. For all that the pair of them were exhausted, their daughter was doing fine.

"Still?" Here, he'd thought maybe she'd worn herself out being a night owl, but then again, the girl had proven to be hugely stubborn when it came to fidgeting and bopping around. "Hope she's not causing you trouble," he grinned. He'd brought out a half-used package bacon and a carton of eggs, which made him an instant favourite amongst the four-legged crowd, but using feet and shins where necessary, he waded his way back to the counter near the stove top and got to work on the human side of breakfast. Pets could wait, as they had been trained to do -- as he reminded Vanar again. Valkea, on the other hand, got free pass to continue trying to worm her way to Aaron's heart, as it was impossible to tell her otherwise.

He soon had a cup of coffee and a plate for Kay, which he propped on the stand out of dog's way but near the chair, and, scooping a big cup and a little cup of respective kibble for the dog and cat, he offered to take the baby from Kay. "Eat up," he told her, settling on a stool nearby as he scraped a jumbled mishmash of meat and eggs and toast into his mouth, the child cradled in one arm.

BLORTCH

[personal profile] jkatkina 2012-02-23 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Kay had just finished feeding Cassie when Aaron swooped in to continue the game of hot-potato baby. Being made to wait for her own breakfast only made the woman more ravenous, so she didn't protest, instead snagging the plate he'd brought for her and starting in with especial gusto. "She still needs to be burped," she reminded the blonde, sounding blissful around a mouthful of eggs. "Don't forget a cloth." Nothing quite like warm-milk baby-puke all down the back to ruin breakfast!

"Augh," Aaron replied around his own food. Still, better sooner than later. The girl was squirming in his arm and seemed uncomfortable, so he whisked out a tea towel and set her up. Moving out of range of his own plate, he jounced her a little on his chest, watching Kay with a look of sleepy amusement. "Kid to belch, dog to walk, shit to clean, and you're just going to lull around the house, aren't you?"

"Yyyyup," she confessed to him with deep irony, taking a pause in the cramming of eggs into her mouth. "Listen, I did the hard part already." Cassie was only a couple of weeks old, and it had taken Kay that time to recover from the birth as such. Not that she was milking it; the redhead had been doing what she could, meeting Aaron's efforts at the very least, and they were doing pretty well.

Still. That didn't mean she couldn't get sarcastic on him. She propped her feet up against the counter, bare and pink, and watched with a look of satisfaction as he gently jostled the baby. "I'll walk the cat, or something."

Oh god, too much blortching!

[personal profile] dray 2012-02-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'd like to see you try," Aaron replied. Then the baby burped and, shuddering, Aaron transferred her over and slipped the towel into the sink for lack of a quicker placement. Turning his back to Kay, he asked, "did I get it all?" The worst moment was leaning back into a chair or otherwise feeling that precious moment of cooling wet crap soaking into his shirt.... ughghghghgh.

Kay put aside the last twenty percent of her breakfast in favour of taking the baby back, bouncing the now contented infant and settling her in. At least she got a little calmer for a couple of minutes after a feeding, and leaning back so that Cassie was leaned against her chest, Kay let the rocking chair do its work. "You're getting better at that. Looks like you're clear," she told Aaron after a quick examination of the offered back.

Baby Boomer averted!

[personal profile] dray 2012-02-24 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Aaron turned around again, quirking a grin. "It's not the last time. Anyways, I've got the dog to walk," he said. Vanar, listening now that he'd finished the last of his food, perked up immediately. "Leash," Aaron commanded, and watched as the dog tore across the house with wild abandon, treading on Valkea's tail as he did so. The cat leapt and hissed, ducking under the pantry door and out of sight. Really, she hadn't even finished her food yet and that dog always had to get on her nerves!

At least he had meant no ill will. The great mutt returned after a jingling escapade and leapt up, paws on Aaron's chest as he shoved the sloppy leash in the blonde's face enthusiastically. By this point, Vanar was just as large as Kay, as the elemental had predicted. His long tail whipped enthusiastically about, the scraggly brush of it inherited from his shepherd side, whacking into Kay's knee as he accosted Aaron with his burning desire to walk. He only subsided when the blonde pushed him to the ground with an imperial noise, and the brief standoff occurred while Aaron waited for the dog to get himself under control.

As though only barely managing it, Vanar sat, though his tail continued to flail enthusiastically. "Still," Aaron demanded, waiting until only the tiniest tail twitch was visible. He leaned in and hooked the dog's collar and immediately Vanar was up, pushing to be out the door immediately.

It took another couple of tries to get the dog to wait by the door, but once Aaron had slipped his shoes on, they were off, leaving Kay some quiet time with Cassie. The only other noise in their house was the cheerful burbling of coffee in the far corner of the room.

..or so you thought.

The peace was lulling, pleasant but dangerous for the tired Kay. That said, the squirming bundle against her chest kept her from relaxing into the temptation to sleep again, and instead she watched the new child.

Cassie was too young still to do a lot of the really charming baby things, like smiling and really laughing, but she'd already started staring at the world with the kind of stunned, bleary amazement that small people had. That in itself was pretty sweet, and when Cassie wasn't screaming to make her wants known or trying to flail herself free of parental arms, she was looking at things. Right now that was the case, and in the quiet house she took satisfaction from watching Cassie watch her.

Not for too long, though. "I recognize that face. Hey! Don't you dare... oh, fine." The straining infant, after all, paid her no mind and Kay was already standing from the rocking chair when the usual foul smell suffused the air.

"You couldn't'a stayed cute and quiet for another few minutes, could you have?" The little girl crowed and waved her arms in blithe reply, apparently proud of her achievement as Kay carted her off to the change table. At least when Aaron came home, it'd be to a nice fresh baby instead of a stinky one!

That was something of a relief; perhaps he'd dodged a bullet. He returned with the dog about a half hour after he'd left, Vanar looking no less enthusiastic... but perhaps not quite as hyper as he had been. Aaron's cheeks were red from wind and cold, and he threw off his coat and shoes. By that point, Vanar had already come to Kay, leash trailing behind him, but Aaron barked at him and the dog loyally trotted back to have himself unhooked.

"I'm back," he announced, looking around for Kay and finally finding her strolling between rooms with Cassie in her arms. "Miss me?" Of course Kay missed him. Everyone loved him~

"You were gone?" she teased the blonde, though really it hadn't felt like he'd been gone long at all! She at least looked contented underneath the tired look, and when Vanar came trotting back again she hitched Cassie up against her chest, freeing a hand to scratch between the happy dog's ears.

Kay got a sloppy licking from the dog as he greeted her, floppy ears quirked as he looked up at the baby that Aaron was offering to take. "If you really want, I could go out again," he teased right back. "I'll come back later tonight after you make supper and put Cassie down."

"No you don't, blondie," she told him, passing Cassie back over. Eventually they'd get around to bringing her bassinet out to the living area, but for now the little girl was getting held pretty much exclusively. There was still a certain novelty to it, and -- she was still tiny.

She crouched and gave the dog a proper ruffling, getting her face and ears licked with deeply affectionate whines. God, it was so easy to get love from a dog! Kay chortled and pushed the mutt away after a reasonable amount of loving, and stood again, wiping her face on her less-than-clean bathrobe.

Instead she moved around to Aaron's side, looking at the baby he held again. Yeah, the novelty was still there, the mothering hormones were still pumping... well, she'd enjoy it as it lasted. "She came out pretty good, huh." Particularly for the result of a badly-timed broken condom and one hell of a serious discussion or ten.

"She's going to be jumping higher than Vanar if this keeps up," Aaron told the redhead, allowing Cassie to continue her jouncy little squirmings. Given that the god damned dog was able to clear a six foot fence with rollicking good amusement, that was saying something. Then again, if Cassie kept squirming like this, he could easily picture her bouncing that high when he accidentally dropped her.

"Hey, settle down in there," Aaron admonished the girl. She was kicking against his arm, squirming more or less into his armpit. He shifted her about, arms bouncing a little to distract and confuse her. "She's kind of nice when she's got her mouth shut," he observed, wondering if he could escape for a quick nap at this point...
