Yup, he's carrying a portable kennel. :I After bringing home a cat to spring on the redhead a couple of years ago, you'd think he'd have the good sense to stop at one. "Hey, firecracker," he yodels as he opens her door and waltzes on in. "Someone followed me home!"

She caught Valkea before the no-longer-so-little white cat could even think of bolting to the door, her spidey senses tingling at the way Aaron sounded so self-satisfied. It never boded well. Uh, maybe not never.

Boosting off the couch with the squirming cat in her arms, she poked her head around the hallway that led to the door. Her eyes flicked down to the carrier, the glimpse of scared animal within. "Dang. Uh, hang on," she dodged into her bedroom, deposited one puffed-up white cat and quickly escaped again. "You know, it doesn't count as 'followed' they're in a kennel."

Still, she couldn't help the curiosity, and crouched down to get a good peek into the carrier. "Hey."

"It wasn't in the kennel the entire time," Aaron replied, grinning, "but once I brought him in the shelter put him through his paces. I had to go by to pick him up today." Kay got a brief glimpse of a puppy of a mongrel build; it would have been absolutely terrifying if it were, say, grown up and in its element. Right now it was backed into the corner of its kennel, tail tucked between its legs as it regarded the little woman anxiously.

"They say it's some kind of bully cross," the blonde was telling her, setting the crate down gently, "some assholes were planning on guard dogs or something, I guess, I dunno." He was kneeling before the crate, opening it up. Slipping a side bag off his arm that looked heavy with supplies, he added, "I've got most of the shit to take care of him, and he's had his first shots. Bring me some rags, would you?" He frowned, noting that the poor thing had left a mess.

Aaron crooned to the pup as he proceeded to set out a couple of bowls. Some food and water, one to each, he left the door open in case the bulky little sausage-pup wanted to come out, but at the moment he wasn't reaching any arms in.

The redhead obliged, bemused -- well, amused. She'd never developed the same talents with dogs as with cats, and that'd put a crimp in her pet-ownership style for this newest addition, but what the hell. It'd been a while.

She hunkered down and passed the rags Aaron's way. "You couldn't have, like, let me know, first. Val's going to flip her tiny hairy shit." Still, peering into the kennel she had to come to the conclusion, "he's cute. Stinky, but cute."

"Well, unless you want me to rent out another apartment," Aaron replied, "we'll see how things go. He was friendly enough when he started trailing me around. He just needs to get used to you."

That said, he crooned to the pup again, holding a hand in front of the open door with a few soft grains of kibble. "Hey, little fella," he was saying, "you want to come out of that stink hole? There's food, babes, free walks... pretty much everything you'd ever want." Not that the dog would understand the words, but the soothing tone of voice seemed to be having an effect.

Eventually the pup was lured forward, though not until Aaron had asked Kay to back away for a bit. The little guy peeked out, sniffing Aaron's hand, his floppy velvet ears trembling along with the rest of him. He was more or less a shade of silvered dun, with thicker hairs along his back in a much darker, blotchy blanket... probably some kind of shepherd mix. That was going to be trouble, given their current living arrangements...

Yet Aaron was crooning encouragement and the puppy was soon eating eagerly from his hand, which was an endearing sight on its own. "That's my little stinker," Aaron praised, moving his hand closer to the bowl. The pup was following, cautious but hungry, and willing to believe that the blonde had his best interests at heart.

Kay wasn't taking note of how sickeningly adorable her resident douchebag was being with the puppy. She was looking at the little beast's feet, big floppy puppy paws: operative word, big.

"This one's gonna be a monster," she pointed out pragmatically, and groaned. "That'll be fun. If he starts tearing the place up, I'm putting that on you. He really should be at a place with a big backyard..." It wouldn't be enough just to sneak him out to the country now and then, as she could do. Still, she couldn't begrudge the puppy himself. Kay rehad backed off obligingly, but she still talked at the dog gently, softening her own tone to something gentler than she'd been using on Aaron. "Hey, monster. We should probably be friends, you and I."

The puppy was eating from the bowl after Aaron had shown it to him, and though his tail was still tucked between his legs, he seemed as though he wasn't spooked by the presence of Kay. When Aaron went to clean the kennel, however, the puppy backed right into it again. "Hey now," Aaron told the mutt, "do you want a stink-hole for a safe house or a clean room? You're smelling up the house, you know." It seemed that the pup wasn't interested, however, for it whimpered and remained where it was.

Sighing, Aaron mopped up what he could, telling Kay, "I had a good long talk to some of the ladies working at the shelter. He's been enrolled in some puppy training classes and I've already downloaded a good amount of literature on taking care of the big kind of brutes," he tapped his temple with his clean hand, grinning wryly in Kay's direction. "But the space is probably still going to be an issue..." He stood after a moment, adding, "not like we couldn't use a little more space in general, though." Living on the seventh floor of a downtown apartment in the middle of a metropolis was all well and good for twenty-somethings kicking around, but he had always preferred owning more, when he could!

He rinsed out the cloth in the sink, coming back after a while, sitting with the puppy. "So, I was thinking 'Vanar', but I just wanted something to compliment the cat."

"Van and Val," Kay considered. "That'll be too ironic if they don't get along."

She hadn't disturbed the pup when he'd gone back to eating, even in the interests of making friends. She'd just sat, treating it like she treated any new cat in her life -- the pup'd come to her when he wanted, although there was a significant chunk of her that wanted to play with those ears.

The thought of moving out of the apartment, though, set her to some thoughts that weren't entirely comfortable -- but then weren't entirely uncomfortable either. It wasn't like their odd dalliance hadn't been going on for a couple of years now, but then in the lifespan of an elemental a couple of years was small change. She sat back and regarded the man, once he'd returned, her look funny and wry. "You know, you could have just asked."

"There is that," Aaron replied, returning to the little porta-kennel and settling in. "But don't even worry about it. It's not like we're planning on a picket fence together or anything." Even after all this time, there were a few issues between them with making solid decisions regarding where their lives were going; it had been a serious thing to move into an apartment meant for two, after all, when he'd been dallying around as a neighbour for all that time.

Kay considered, and then abruptly barked a laugh, startling the puppy in his kennel again. The plunge is already taken, Kay, she told herself. Now's just to see where it goes. "Hell, we might as well. This new monster is going to need a fence, white or no."
