caught in the rain

it started out quietly, and then, quite suddenly, you're caught in a storm. Time to find cover. Nothing much to do but to wait it out.

Scenarios listed below for those who want 'em.

i WHERE:
001 PLAYGROUND - Well, you can try to hide under the slide or maybe in the jungle gym... at least you're some place fun?
002 PARK - Always happens, caught outside trying to take advantage of the weather... and it ends up pulling a fast one on you.
003 STORE FRONT - Better hope they have an awning you can take advantage of 
004 THE BEACH - Not exactly the best place to be during a rainstorm, however it is possible to get caught in a sudden storm
005 WILD CARD - Anyway you want it


ii HOW:
001 TREE - Not the best cover, but it'll have to do, stay close to the roots and you won't get too wet.
002 UMBRELLA - Most conventional... Kinda boring. But it works.
003 NEWSPAPER - Not permanent, but it'll have to do. Good luck
004 BAG - Well... y'gotta do what you gotta do.
005 NONE - You know what. You're a rebel. You don't need cover. Screw convention

[This place has so many interesting shops that Vivi's fascinated by, full of bright lights and new smells, but he hasn't been keeping track of the open hours of... Sunny... Sunnywhat? He can't remember. All he knows is that he leaves a pet store (there had been several friendly kitties to scratch behind the ears) and suddenly notices that it's raining. And all of the shop owners are turning around their signs to 'CLOSED.' Oops.]

[He pulls his hat down more, trying to use it as a makeshift umbrella, and holds his stave close. It's dark out, and he's not sure where to go, and as he's trying to figure that out he bumps into someone. Oops! Again. Those big eyes blink in surprise.]

Oh, um, s-sorry!

[Buffy had been on her way out of the Magic Box when the little guy collided with her. Thankfully he's too small to have really done any damage. ...Not that anyone would have a super easy time knocking Buffy of all people over, but it's been known to happen.]

Hey, no big. [And then she takes stock of his very strange clothes.

...And the eyes. The glowy eyes. Glowy eyes are never a good sign.]

[She's looking at him. A girl is looking at him. Vivi blinks several more times and jams his hat more over his head, because all of that talk from Zidane about girls goes right over his head. He shuffles his feet.]

Are, um... ...all the shops closing?

[Buffy frowns a little. This is just a kid. Glowy eyes or not, the voice sounds like a kid and he's about the right height for one, too.]

Yeah. This is kinda a small town.

[She glances behind herself at the Magic Box's door. She probably shouldn't let him inside, but... he does seem to be just a kid.]

Do you wanna come in here or something? I know the owner, so I've got the key.

[littlehat]

[Vivi stills a little, weighing his options. Timid is the word, here. He doesn't know this person, but still, the rain's coming down pretty hard, and getting worse. His hat can only take so much.]

I-if it's okay. Just until the storm calms down...?

[Blink. Blink.]

[Buffy offers a bright smile.]

Course it is! This might not be the south, but there's gotta be some kind of West Coast hospitality stereotype out there somewhere.

[She turns and unlocks the door. When she opens it, the bell inside jangles dutifully although there's currently not a single Scooby or cashier around to be alerted to the presence of a potential customer.]

[littlehat]

[Those two glowing discs widen at the sight of the shop's interior. It looks like something you might find in Alexandria. He follows her inside, scraping his shoes first just in case, and then proceeds to gawk, his stave clasped in one hand.]

Woah...

[He waddles around to look at things more closely.]

Your friend has a... neat shop...

[Buffy laughs a little. This is one strange kid.]

Thanks.

[It then occurs to her that she probably should make sure he knows not to touch anything.]

Just uh...try not to touch anything, okay? I know some of it's kinda goofy looking, but you could get hurt.

[littlehat]

I-I won't!

[It's a squeak. He keeps his hands to himself, and wanders closer to Buffy.]

Um...

[He should probably introduce himself, he thinks. It would be polite.]

I'm Vivi.

[deathishergift]

[Vivi? Huh.

Not that Buffy could judge much on the strange name scale, that's still pretty odd.]

I'm Buffy. [She crouches down to Vivi's level.] How old are you, Vivi?

[littlehat]

[He sounds and looks nine, but. Blink blink. Vivi fidgets.]

I don't know...

[Buffy frowns just a little in response. It's not direct at Vivi though since it's more confusion than anything else. How do you not know how old you are? Unless you're incredibly old, but Vivi doesn't really sound like some kind of ancient being. Certainly doesn't seem to act like it.]

Do you know when your birthday is then?

[littlehat]

I know the day I met my grandpa. I don't remember anything before that. When's your birthday?

[He's curious. There are so many new things to learn! And it takes his mind off of Quan.]

[Met his grandfather? Buffy tries to dig into the dark recesses of her mind of an introductory psychology class. There was definitely something about trauma and repressing in there. Glowy eyes or not, she hopes that's not the case with Vivi and it's just something...well, more her territory.]

January 19th. Ask my age though and I'm totally lying even though I'm way too young to start that.

[littlehat]

I-I-

That's rude. Isn't it? I wouldn't do that.

[Vivi blinks at her earnestly.]

[With a laugh:] Relax. I was kidding. About the asking me my age part. The being too young to start lying is definitely true though.

[Of course, she could still be lying about not needing to lie, but Buffy decides to let that one...well...lie.]

[littlehat]

[A little nod.]

Oh. Why do people lie about it?

[deathishergift]

Well, when you get old, parts start sagging that should never sag and your skin gets all wrinkly. It's pretty unsightly.

[Buffy would be lucky to see that age though. She already almost didn't once in high school, but tries not to dwell on that.]

[littlehat]

[...wrinkly skin! So that's where it comes from. Not that you'd be able to tell with his skin. And... Vivi knows he doesn't have as long as other creatures. The Black Mages in the village hadn't made it through a year. But that's okay. He'll enjoy everything, and explore, until the end.]

Doesn't it make it obvious that they're lying?

[Good question. One Buffy can only stab at.]

It makes them feel better, I guess.

[littlehat]

Oh. Well. If it doesn't hurt them or others, that's okay.

[deathishergift]

[Yep, definitely a kid. How old though? Buffy's not entirely sure, but she's not going to stress over it. He's young enough as far as she's concerned, but not a baby...whatever he's supposed to be.]

Good philosophy. You should never hurt anybody if you can help it.

[Unless they really deserve it. Or they're Spike. Which...same thing.]

Y-yes, that's what I think, too.

[She can't see a smile, but his eyes look brighter, somehow. Then they shift to the window, where the rain is beginning to dissipate, and he grows aware that Buffy probably has things she needs to do.]

Um... the rain looks like it's stopping. T-thank you for letting me stay here. I don't want to hold you up or anything...

[She shakes her head.] Only saved me a wet walk home. So really, I should be thanking you.
