Mitsuki is doing a good job at pretending it isn't (forced as they have been in this predicament), but she is perhaps sitting a bit more stiffly than she would normally. She adjusts her scarf, then leans over the edge of the boat to touch one of the lanterns as they pass.
She keeps Suzume in her line of vision, a space at the corner of her eye.]
Ah, Fujioka-san...it's nice, isn't it?
no subject
She's hunched up at the other end of the boat, the knees tucked against her chest supporting her chin as she curls in on herself. While tall and long-limbed, Suzume doesn't dare to stretch out or relax. To do that would be to make herself vulnerable, to then broadcast such a state to this ugly and hateful world. Even though, for now, it's a world comprised of only herself and Mitsuki and paper vessels that glow like soft, warm stars.]
Hm? Oh- yeah, it is. It's, uh, really impressive....all these lanterns.
[The answer is delayed, a little dazed, as if Suzume was just jerked back to reality, and trails off meekly into silence. She blinks at Mitsuki, glances away, then those bright green eyes flick upward.]
I think one's gonna land on us.

To her credit, Mitsuki waits for the delayed response without getting visibly annoyed, and watches the paper lantern float down toward them instead of responding right away. She stands up in the boat in careful, slow movements, and smoothly plucks the dancing lantern out of the air before it can land. She sits down again, and cups the glowing light in her hands. It brings out warm tones in her blue eyes and hair, makes the colors look softer.]
So it did. Would you like to hold it, Fujioka-san? It’s...ah. It’s very pretty.
[An awkward attempt at fostering conversation, at extending some kindness, but it’s a genuine attempt, nonetheless.]

-Hey, Ishikawa-san....!
[The beginnings of the feeble, awkward protest die in her throat. Mitsuki has already stood up, is keeping her balance quite well, and so the momentary (but powerful, almost nauseating) burst of fear that their boat would trip over and catapult them into the cold water.....that unpleasant jolt ebbs and fades. And soon, Suzume can no longer be sure that she ever felt such a thing in the first place. She had leaned forward, muscles tensing presumably to catch Mitsuki, but more likely just to prepare herself for disaster, and now eases back. Shrinks away, makes herself seem small and harmless.
She glances at the lantern, and the polite urge to refuse wells up on the tip of her tongue. Habitual, comforting, worn thin like a favorite piece of protective cloth. But then Suzume thinks of Keiko, what the tiny girl would want her to do, and there's a guilty twinge; she nods shyly, offers a frail sort of smile.]
I'd like that, thanks.
[A difficult moment, then she slowly holds her hands out for it. Palms up, her fingers lightly calloused, the nails trimmed to a careful perfection that didn't seem to suit her at all.]

Then the wheels turn in her head and the outburst becomes clear. Mitsuki hands the lantern to Suzume gently (and again, that machine of a brain makes a mental note of it). She leans back again, laces her fingers in her lap.]
It's nicer up close, see? ...Ah, and were you worried I'd fall? It's fine. [Her expression warms a little...briefly, and then closes off again, becomes difficult to read. She crosses one leg over the other — an unconscious, feminine gesture — and returns her focus to the placid lake.]
You know, it's never just us, is it? [It's an idle observation, a question for the sake of it. She knows the answer already.] Perhaps that's why Keiko-chan was so insistent, hmm...
no subject
The second question seems to fluster her. The tips of her ears go pink, and her mouth briefly works before she gets a handle on her words and offers, with a sheepish smile:]
...well, yeah. Who wouldn't be, right?
[She trails off into silence again, dimly grateful that Mitsuki had assumed something so socially acceptable of her. It wasn't that Suzume wouldn't have tried to catch Mitsuki.....but deep down, in the dark cauldron where all her hate and anger simmered at a constant boil, there's the despicable thought that it still would have been a gratifying thing to see the blue-haired girl fall. Suddenly unsettled, Suzume rubs her cheek in a vaguely nervous gesture, and latches onto the distraction that is Mitsuki's next stab at keeping the conversation going.]
Keiko-chan's insistent about a lot of things. [There's the faintest shade of....of something that's almost defiance in her voice when she says Keiko's name - as if Suzume was claiming the girl, marking her as someone that was as much her friend as she was Mitsuki's and the other girls. It's quick to fade, though, and then Suzume hums in a thoughtful way.] Maybe we should bring this [a thumb runs gently along the ridge of the lantern] back with us. For her, I mean. Maybe...she'd like it.
