the insomnia meme

the i n s o m n i a meme

It happens to everyone - sometimes, you have nights where you just can't fall asleep, no matter what you do. It could be for a number of reasons, or no reason at all. And this is what's happened now: you've been laying in bed for what feels like hours, just tossing and turning, and nothing seems to help. So what's left to do? Get out of bed and go wake someone else up, of course. If you're not getting any sleep, then why should they?

01 • FEAR. Maybe you're hearing strange, indeterminable noises; maybe there's a severe storm happening outside; maybe you watched a scary movie before bed? Whatever the reason, you're terrified and it's keeping you awake. You just want to wake someone else up so they can protect you from the monster in your closet.
02 • HUNGER. Your stomach is growling and it just won't stop. Or perhaps your throat is so dry you could cough up a tumbleweed? Well, you've gone to the kitchen to remedy this and hey, that was a pan that just dropped on the floor. It was loud enough to wake the dead! Oops.
03 • PAIN. Your body is completely worn out, be it from exercise, battle, sickness, or what have you. Either way you're in enough pain to keep you from sleeping, so maybe someone else has a home remedy or something, or can at least help you take your mind off of it.
04 • SOLITUDE. For some reason, your bed just feels so empty at the moment. You're feeling terribly lonely and really just want someone to keep you company for a while. Maybe it'd be easier to fall asleep if you're with them...
05 • DISCOMFORT. Your room is an oven. Either that or a freezer. Or maybe this bed is just really uncomfortable? Who knows why you can't get to sleep, it feels like it could be anything. Why even bother trying? Maybe someone else can preoccupy you until you feel tired enough to ignore your discomfort.
06 • PENSIVE. Something's on your mind, and no matter how hard you try to focus elsewhere, it's just not going to work. Your body may be tired, but your mind is incredibly busy and it's virtually impossible to get to sleep. Surely, talking it out with someone else will help?
07 • SADNESS. Something terrible has happened that day, perhaps; or you could just be severely depressed. Either way you're trying your hardest not to cry yourself to sleep, and it's not working at all. Better find a way to get it out of your system somehow; you need a shoulder to cry on.
08 • ANGER. You are just... fuming. Who knows why - that annoying dog is barking again, or maybe the people next door are getting busy and keeping you awake. Whatever the reason for your ire is, you'd better put an end to it so you can get some damn rest already! Go wake up a friend so you can complain to them.
09 • RESTLESS. You're far too energetic to sleep right now. Maybe you're just trying to do so out of necessity - you have to be up early tomorrow! But you just don't think you'll be able to fall asleep for a while now, so why waste the time trying to sleep when you could be doing something else? Namely bothering someone else - you're totally jealous because they're getting more sleep than you.
10 • WILDCARD. Choose one of the options above, or make up your own scenario.

Being awake in the small hours of morning isn't unusual for Hana . It's that she's not doing her usual things. Gaming, watching streaming television, casually streaming, not even on her phone.

Her footsteps were quiet on the hard floor despite what green combat boots she's wearing. No surprise in the least to see Shiro was already there with his ears covered, but she doesn't disturb him this time. The duffel bag plopped next to her feet, same color as her korean fatigues; half of them anyway. The white shirt she has on looks a little more relaxed than the top neatly folded in the bag, visible when the zipper to the bag opens.

But the pink gun on that uniform top, looking as if it was soaked in a deluge of every type of logo under her trademarked name, is what she took out. A single tap to her headset on the right spot turns on the noise cancellation and Hana takes a stance so her boots are shoulder length apart, her arms holding the gun as she had been trained.

An unheard command from her and Athena changed the shooting range, her gun flashing green in expert burst shots to leave clean sizzling simulated holes in the now mobile holographs that were running around; appearing to fire back. She wasn't bothering to react to their shots. Simply kill them. Only once did she chance a glance at plastic barrier between her stall and Shiro's.

The first night of her return from her week at the Korean army base and D.Va couldn't sleep at all.

He's used to his late night sessions. He's just not used to having company for them. He doesn't mind. There's plenty of room at the range and he's good at focusing down to just his objectives - but he still notices when someone comes in and a quick glance, in the middle of a set, surprises him.

He hadn't expected to see D.Va here.

When he walks his rounds late at night, the light under her door is often on but he doesn't usually catch her roaming the hallways as well. Carefully lining up shots and taking them, mind already calculating ahead to the next and the next before the trigger gets squeezed, he still has enough thought to devote to realizing she's just back from her time at the army base.

And to wonder if something happened there that's got her up and eliminating targets as if its the finals in a championship gaming session with a timer running.

It's her own business but he finishes up his session and doesn't signal another, receiving his score with an absent-minded nod of thanks to Athena and turning in the gun he was using for practice. He's a fine shot. He just doesn't usually use a gun in combat.

She might be here for a while. Especially if she's blowing off tension. She certainly hadn't come looking for him. But Shiro still settles on the bench at the back wall, out of her way so he's not a distraction and pulls out two bottles of water. One he opens for himself - and the other he sets on the bench next to him. Waiting.

Normally the former WCS champion would be giving cute fan service poses after clearing a round of the simulator, even using her camera to upload the photo so she could show off to anyone who wasn't there to see it. Instead, the light beep of targets being hit go off one after another, her automatic gun didn't let off one shot that missed. Letting out whatever was bothering her had Athena listing off her chain of eliminations by holographic number under her score. Finally, after a third round following Shiro's last, Hana put her side-arm back in the duffel bag.

Her boots echoed again and she paused briefly at seeing Shiro sitting, her foot caught mid-step as if the full water bottle next to him had abruptly spoken. Shiro had always been a good friend since they met and sometimes it felt like he was the only one who treated her like an equal instead of a kid. Decision made, Hana took the bottle as she sat down next to him and drank. And drank until a quarter of it was gone.

"Thanks, Shiro." She wiped the little sheen of sweat from her brow while leaning back into the seat. "...Have you ever played Starcraft two?"

She was definitely working through something. Anyone who knew her habits the slightest bit could see the way she was deviating from them. They all had things they dealt with. Shiro would be a hypocrite if he didn't acknowledge that and the fact that they all had their own ways of doing so. He doesn't get in the way of that kind of thing.

But he didn't leave either and when she took him up on his silent offer some of the tight muscles in his shoulders relaxed. He didn't interrupt while she was drinking though, willing to sit in silence, his arms across his thighs, mostly empty bottle loose in one hand. And he didn't question her choice of subject material either. However she wanted him, he was there for her. Even if his video game knowledge was going to depress her.

"Can't say I have." A slight head shake. "Why?"

A resemblance of the world's smallest smile twitched at the corners of her lips as she idly twisted the cap to her bottle on and off. She had guessed that was going to be his answer, and that made talking a lot easier then if he had.

"My father got me into video games when I was young. So I found it funny that I got him into Starcraft." She took a an almost silent sigh and sipped some of the water while looking at Shiro. "I've never been able to beat him at it, but we love playing together. Because of everything that's been going on, I haven't been able to do that this year."

Her fingers drum on the plastic around the bottle slowly and her eyes drop from Shiro's face to his prosthetic arm.

"...I just really miss him."
