High School AU!

 Dumb High School AU

We all know what this is. Just do it. No regrets.

[Mabel's got this. She's totally got this. Her hair is styled with colorful clips and she's got patterned flared out pants and glimmering earrings and a bright shirt with flared sleeves. She briefly considered stuffing her bra but that was totally the kind of thing that her brother and cousins would notice and call out, so she decided against it. She's cool and fashionable and she's totally got this.

(She is terrified.)

First day of high school. They deliberately put her and Dipper in separate classes across the length of the school, so it'll be hard to meet up with him before lunch, but that's okay! Her cousin Stan promised to look out for her, and while their parents like to shake their heads at him, she loves and trusts her cousin to come through for her.

She stands by her locker, grinning at people who pass her in an attempt to start conversation, but everyone rushes by to get to class. Maybe she'll have better luck at lunch.]

Heya squirt!

[Stan parks himself next to her, leaning himself all cool against the locker next to her and reaching out to ruffle her hair. Not too hard, though - don't wanna' mess it up too bad, not when he can tell the poor kid put so much work into lookin' good. He jerks his head toward the latest guy to walk right past when she tries to talk, raising his eyebrows.]

Don't worry about them, they don't know what they're missin' out on. Not yet, anyway. We just gotta' give 'em something to talk about. Look, you can practice on me if you want. So what's your story, mysterious cool new kid? You got that part worked out yet?

[She winces when he ruffles her hair, immediately smoothing it out again, but when she turns to look at him, she gives a full 100-watt grin.] Stanley! [And then she launches herself at him with a hug like they haven't seen each other in years (it's been a week, max). You see, she is nailing the cool and mysterious girl persona she's supposed to be working on.] I'm so glad to see you! I mean--

[Right, right, got to act cool, right. She lets him go after a quick squeeze, and then she draws a blank. Story? She should think of a story?

Well, duh, she should have a story. She leans on her locker and attempts to look cool, but really, she just looks a bit like a dork with a screwed up expression.]
Uh... My story is... [Make up something cool, Mabel. Like something out of those cool YA novels.] ...I have a mermaid boyfriend.

[That was probably not what Stan was looking for, but oh well.]

[Stan hugs her back and smiles, and it ain't a careless, cool guy smile, it's a real one. Having cousins around is nice, really nice. He thinks he could get used to it, maybe. He doesn't change his mind when she says the mermaid thing, either, just grins, and it is a cool guy grin this time but it's real enough, too.]

A lover from distant waters, okay, that's a good start. Let's just call him 'foreign' for now, okay? So tell me about this suave devil. Was it a whirlwind romance? Why are all the girls in school gonna' turn into green-eyed jealous monsters when they hear what he's like?

[You see, this is why Mabel loves her cousin so much (apart from the fact that, you know, he's family): he never makes her feel like she's dumb. Plenty of people make her feel that way, but never Stanley.]

He's, uh, a musician! He can play guitar and he writes songs about me! We met over the summer but have been tragically separated because he lives so far away!

[Just keep hitting those teen cliches, Mabel. They're gold.]

That must be tough. Lucky you have those songs to keep you company, huh? Hey, if you got all your stuff, how about you sing me one of 'em while I go ahead and show you around? There's no faster way to make the other kids jealous than with a good love song.
