0. The Fool: Starting on a journey. Doing something foolish and taking it on faith that it will turn out alright. Whether or not it does is up in the air. This is the beginning of something new. You’re going on a journey and you don’t know what’s out there. But don’t worry, it’ll be fine.

[Loki is sitting in the kitchen of the Avengers Mansion. It is very early in the morning, so early not even the Captain was awake yet, but Loki is.

It was only a month after he decided to start helping the Avengers after they saved him from the Chitauri. Things are still tense with most of the heros, and rightfully so. He knows they will never fully accept him, but then he knew he'd never be accepted anywhere.

So here he sits, nibbling some toast covered in something Stark had told him was 'peanut butter']

[Clint doesn't sleep all that well after meeting Loki for the first time. Big surprise, but having the source of that problem only a few rooms away doesn't exactly help with that.

Neither does finding him in the kitchen at four in the morning when all Clint wanted was a glass of water and a couple aspirin. So when he walks in on this scene his first instinct is to walk right out.

Still, he's not about to let the so-called 'god' intimidate him. He's getting his water. Without a word he shuffles past the kitchen table and opens the cupboard to rustle around for a glass.]

[Loki watches him move by, wondering if talking to him would be a good idea. Clint had (obviously) been one of the strongest opposers of Loki becoming an honorary Avengers. Things had not smoothed over much in the month he had been living with them. He did count it at as a small victory that Clint was not obviously</> armed at 4 am.]

Good morning.

[Start small, work up to larger conversations. Don't say anything the other could see as threatening or creepy]

[Oh, Loki. Not obviously armed, but thanks to you, Barton sleeps with a gun close at hand, and carries a knife on him at all times. Even when getting some damned aspirin in the middle of the night. He grunts in response to Loki's greeting and turns on the tap.]

Not so far.

[Okay, no death threats, that was a definite improvement.]

You do not typically wake this early. Trouble sleeping?

[That's not creepy, right? Loki is always up around this time, getting up early meant he could eat breakfast without any of the awkwardness of trying to eat with the others. In truth he very rarely came to any group meals unless coerced by Thor or another.]

[Face it, Loki. Just about everything you say is creepy. Clint takes his time before bothering to answer, drinking two glasses of water while standing at the sink and wondering just what he did to deserve this. Finally he sets the glass down and turns to face the Asgardian fully, arms crossed.]

Get to your point.

[He's struggling to keep his voice even, because what Loki said? Sounds a hell of a lot like gloating to him.]

[Okay, defensive stance and controlled voice. Maybe not so much improvement.]

I was merely trying to make small-talk. Like it or not I'm going to be here a while, learning how to interact with you all is in my best interest.

[And Clint clearly doesn't like it, judging by the tightening of his jaw. He finds himself thinking about the knife, and praying for an excuse to have to use it.]

Then let me set you straight. You killed Coulson. You tried to kill all of us. You made me kill for you. So small talk? Sorry, but that's not an option.

[And he does take a few steps toward Loki until he's nearly standing over him, all the while keeping his hand on that hidden knife. Just in case.]

You want to do something in your best interest? Stop talking.

[Stop talking? This is Loki. Talking is what he does, he doesn't just stop, especially when he had something to say.

The remainder of the peice of toast was layed on the counter as Loki straightened up and looked Barton straight in the eye]

Yes, I killed Agent Phil Coulson, but would you really be so up in arms about that were is someone you did not know? If you had been assigned another handler, or another had gone to stop me that day?

And yes, the Teseract guided me to you so you could be her chosen warrior. We both know that it was not truly I who controlled you. Had I died, you and Selvig would have marched on, working under the Cube's will.

I would remind you, Clint, that several people in this house have innocent blood on their hands, and we are all working to clean it away. You included.

[He goes cold at that speech, but not because he thinks Loki has a point that's anywhere near valid. No, it's because the only reason Loki knows about any supposed blood debts is because Clint told him. It's just another reason in a long list of reasons for wishing the bastard was dead.]

That's different.

Is it really? Why should all of you get the chance to atone, while I am expected to sit in my sins? Because you never slew anyone I knew personally, despite the fact that many you have killed have had loved ones in your exact situation?

I don't remember ever trying to enslave the world, so yeah. Different.

You want to atone, go right ahead. Nobody's stopping you. Just don't expect us to be friends.

I don't ask to be your friend, I am quiet use to being alone. Common courtesy would be rather pleasant, though.

[Loki stand up, bu instead of looming over Clint, he moves over to the toaster to put in another piece of bread.]

[Okay, now Clint's flabbergasted; Loki's trying to school him about 'common courtesy'? Meanwhile he's taking a defensive stance as soon as Loki so much as moves, his hand gripping the handle of the knife. It only relaxes when he sees the creep just wants another piece of toast.]

When you deserve it, I'll give it.

[And then he just can't help himself from needling Loki a little. Maybe he's hoping to get him to lash out, give Barton the excuse he needs.]

You know, you asked me earlier if I would have cared if it hadn't been Coulson. But that's the thing you don't get. We puny little humans look out for each other. Everyone in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s important. Everyone is missed. We're a team. You might even say we're one big happy family.

Of course, that's not something I'd expect you to know anything about.

[The toast popped out and Loki began spreading the peanut butter on it.

There is the slightest disturbance in the rhythm of the butter knife on the toast when Barton makes the family comment.

Silently, Loki collects his food and book that was laying on the counter in front of Clint and proceeded into the main living area. There he turned on the large flat screen and began watching a random early-morning infomercial.]

[Loki's reaction is satisfying, but not as much as Barton hoped. He's more preoccupied with slowly releasing his white-knuckle grip on the knife and sagging slightly against the chair in relief as soon as he's sure Loki isn't coming back.

He hears the TV babbling quietly on his way to the bathroom for the aspirin and a piss. And he still hears it a few minutes later, but he can't resist popping his head in to check that the Asgardian's still in there and not about to jump out at him from a darkened corner or something.]

[Loki is indeed still in the front room. He is wrapped in a large, red blanket that may or may not actually be Thor's cape, watching an infomercial for some sort of cleaning product.]

For a spy, you are not very sneaky.

Wasn't trying to be. [Not in his own damn house. But yeah, Loki, way to be creepy. Again.]

Are you seriously watching that?

If I am? Are you going to insult my choice in television programs as well? [He really isn't watching it. It was little more than noise to distract him from his thoughts.]

Just surprising, since I've never seen you clean a damn thing around here.

[He does his best to look casual, folding his arms and leaning in the doorway. All the while acutely aware of every movement Loki makes.]

Neither do you. Stark's machines take care of the cleaning.

[The only move Loki makes is to pull the ~~cape~~ blanket up over his shoulder.]

[Good point. But then, Loki's the only one here who's indebted. They should be making him scrub floors, or something. Something to make up for all this.

It's thoughts like these that are turning Clint into a kind of bully, although he wouldn't admit it. He walks right up to the couch to get a closer look at the 'blanket', pinching the material between his fingers.]

[He pulls it just a bit tighter.]

Could be, if Thor wakes up without it.

[But even then, Clint doubts it really would be. Thor's much too lenient with his adopted brother, at least in the archer's opinion.]

But I'm more interested in why you stole it.

He has a spare, he will not mind.

It was on the floor, I thought it was a blanket.

[It was a half truth. He had indeed found the cape on the floor where Thor had discarded it after their latest battle. He had known instantly what it was and had by-passed several different blankets for the security offered by the simple piece of fabric.]
