[As a child, Ben had been half-convinced that he didn't have a soulmate. He never experienced the sensation that his parents had told him about of seeing the world through another's eyes. His dreams remained his own, securely settled inside his own head. It finally changed when he was ten, already sent off to his Uncle to become a Jedi. For the first few years, they were merely indistinct images and feelings, the dreams of a young child. His soulmate was happy and loved wherever she was. (Somehow, he'd known from the start in an instinctive way that it was a girl he was dreaming about.)
At the same time, there was another voice inside his head. The darkness came creeping in, whispering for him to come find him and embrace the power that the way of the Jedi denied him. Eventually, at age fifteen, he gave in. He found Snoke and turned to the dark side. He knew his new master disapproved of this soulmate nonsense. It was a pull to the light and needed to be discarded. Kylo Ren found this easier said then done, especially now that something sad had happened to his soulmate. She was living on a desert planet without her family and she was all alone. He could feel the loneliness through their bond, even with all that he did to block her out of his mind.
It got easier to ignore the dreams as he grew older. He convinced himself that they would probably never meet. In a galaxy where there were billions of lifeforms on each planet, what were the odds? No, better to forget about the girl in his dreams, and focus on the path to the dark side. But still, when he lay down to sleep, he could still see her. No longer a girl, now a young woman, smart and headstrong and still waiting with a fool's hope for a family that wouldn't come back.
The day he captured the scavenger, he hadn't dreamt of her at all. That meant she had to be nearby, sharing the same day and night cycles as he was. His soulmate was closer to him than he'd ever experienced before. He brushed the knowledge away with a gruff hand. It didn't matter, not when the First Order was so close to achieving their goals. Of course, Kylo Ren wasn't the most perceptive sort. It never occurred to him as he watched the prisoner in her bonds that he'd already found the one he was supposed to be with.]

[The notion of soul mates seemed as silly as fairy tales, stories that were told to children to quiet their curiosities and to put them to bed. Rey didn't have parents to tell her the signs to look for if or when she had the chance to find her soul mate. No, the life lessons her parents wanted to teach her never came. She could barely remember their faces, only crying out after them when she was left on Jakku. Before that, she had a happy life though she dreamed of a child who felt scared and alone. A boy who was caught between two worlds--and how she was able to determine it was a boy was beyond her.
When her life on Jakku started, she didn't have dreams. Her body tired and sore from working out in the hot sun to gather parts. On the nights where exhaustion didn't claim her, she had the same dreams again. A boy, now at a camp or with other children, missing his parents. She felt his fear, heard the soft whispers in his mind. There was a night when she woke up screaming, terrified of what she saw. So many people murdered, so many lives taken. That night she thought it was her mind trying to make sense of what happened to her family, but instantly discarded it. No, she continued to cling to the belief her family was still out there. Still looking for her.
The dreams only happened every so often, as she learned to ignore them when she had to. The dreams were no longer making sense, not that they ever did anyway. She briefly heard some of the others on Jakku talking about soul mates, that one often dreamed of them until they were united. A simple story that made Rey shake her head. She thought nothing of it, continuing to go about her work. She had a family she needed to wait for, not a soul mate who probably didn't exist.
Little did she know, the person she actually was waiting for had captured her, putting her in an interrogation room and left her strapped to a table. She was struggling against her binds. Her arms were at her side, which was more preferable as she wouldn't lose blood flow. Her limbs wouldn't fall asleep, not unless they injected her with poison or something else. Rey's mind continued to think of ways of escaping, but stopped. Her captor was here, looking her over like she was an animal.]
I won't tell you anything.
[She would keep her mouth shut and never give away the map to Luke's location.]

[She was a tough sort, no doubt. The kind weathered by the harsh conditions of the planet she had been on and the unscrupulous sorts she'd had to deal with her entire life. He didn't know firsthand was that was like, but he'd dreamed about something similar for many years. He leaned in close to the girl, with no sense of personal space to keep him from looming over her.
One hand came up as he begun to probe in her head. Upon first delving in, the landscape of what made her up caused the dark knight to frown. It felt...familiar, like something he'd experienced before. A strange sense of deja vu came over him. He stubbornly ignored the sensation. He had a mission here that had been set to him by the Supreme Leader. He tried to peel back the layers of her mind, trying to delve further in.]
Show me the map. I know that you saw it.

His face though, his face reminded her of a young boy she used to dream about. A boy who was so alone, just as lonely as her. She pushed the thought to the back of her mind, focusing on the present and trying to keep Kylo Ren from completing his mission.
She let out a groan, hating how he was getting into her mind. No, she wouldn't let him see what she saw. He wouldn't rifle through her memories like they were grains of sand, slipping through his fingers so easily.]
No! Get....get out of my head!
[She struggled against her binds, trying to get free to fight back in a fashion she was more accustomed to. Physically hurting him, trying to get him to leave her alone, but that wouldn't work. The way he was inside of her mind, she began to fight back, trying to force him out. Managing to find strength and power in her own body, not realizing she was calling upon the Force to push him out.]

[She was struggling mightily against him. But others had struggled before too. They always gave in eventually. Her mind was full of the many long, hard days where she'd wander the sands, looking for bits of machinery that she could sell to make enough for portions. He saw all this and more, how she would imagine an island at night to help herself sleep.]
So alone... [He murmured the words quietly as he saw the many long years she'd been on Jakku, left there waiting...Waiting for what? The feeling that he'd experienced this all before hit him harder. The inkling of an idea began to creep into his head. Kylo tried to dismiss it. No. There was no way that it was possible. She couldn't be his-- He pushed the idea away from his mind harder. She wasn't. He would have known on sight, wouldn't he? Then something else inside wondered if all those times his master had tried to get him to block their connection had somehow muted part of it.
Then all his musings came to a screeching halt as he was pushed out of her mind and back into his own head. Now the positions were reversed and his eyes widened in shock. The fear of what she might find there filled him. His self-doubt, his own black-edged loneliness, the crippling fear that he would never be as strong as Darth Vader, they were all prominently on display.]

Suddenly, he's out of her mind. She doesn't feel pain, instead she sees something entirely else. His mind, it's open to her like a flower opens for the rain. She can see his self-doubt, his fear, and.....his loneliness.]
You're....afraid...you'll never be as strong as Vader.
[The power it takes to look into his mind becomes too much for her, but before she manages to pull back...she can see something else. The dreams she had as a child, of a boy who was just as lonely as her. They were in his mind...they were him. He was...he couldn't be. Unable to take anymore, she withdrew her mind out of his. The entire ordeal left her breathless, panting for air with her heart ramming in her chest. Rey couldn't withstand to look at him.
No...he couldn't be her soulmate.]

[His face holds a naked expression of shock. She'd been in his mind and had seen the worst part of him. He feels a stifling pressure in the room and he can't bear to look at her. He turns and leaves, exiting back into the corridor just outside. It takes a few minutes to get his breathing under control and to school his features into a neutral mask. His first thought is to go to his master. Not only has he found his soulmate, she's strong with the Force. This is something he'll want to know about. He's halfway down the corridor, heading towards the room where he can contact the Supreme Leader.
Then a creeping sensation of doubt comes into his mind. Snoke might want him to destroy her, seeing Rey as a threat. He's always said that soulmates are a weakness to those on the Dark Side. Kylo couldn't stand that, to be without the dreams when he sleeps at night, just a dark, empty void where she had once been. That would be his own personal hell. But what can he do? Well, what his master doesn't know about won't hurt him. Kylo's not actively disobeying him, he's just...neglecting to mention all the pertinent information. One thing is clear to him. She mustn't leave this ship. She belongs here with him now. He turns on his heel and heads back towards the room where she's being held captive.]

When he left, she was thankful for it. A chance to gather her thoughts and figure out what to do. She sensed a Stormtrooper coming towards her, she uttered something under her breath which caught his attention. Using the Firce, she persuaded him to free her and to drop his weapon.
By the time Kylo Ren came back, he'd find that she was no longer there. ]

[His shock at discovering his soulmate gone is matched only by his fury. His lightsaber is quick to come out and destroy the room. When that has subsided, he is consumed with one thought. He has to get her back. She belongs to him. He'll find her. He'll find her if he has to tear apart this base room by room. He reaches out with the Force, trying to find her mind amidst all the others on Starkiller. Things are out of his control right now, but that will soon be put to rights.]
Where are you... [He murmurs to himself, trying to find Rey.]

Her steps faltered feeling him trying to reach her mind. She wasn't able to stop him, giving him a glimpse of where she was before she was able to block him. Now, she had to hurry. ]

[Kylo gets a glimpse of where she's heading and changes directions, dashing off towards the hangar of ships. If he hurries, he can still intercept her before she gets away. When Rey gets to the hangar doors, she will find her dark soul mate waiting for her. A hand hovers over his lightsaber but he hasn't turned it on yet.]
Don't leave. [There's something pitifully sad about the way he says the words. He's been alone for so long and it's unfair that Rey would want to abandon him once again. Any soft emotion that his voice might invoke in Rey is pushed aside for the anger that makes his voice rise in a screech.] You can't leave me! [She belongs to him and he won't let her go, not for anything.]

There were so many nights when she wanted him to be near her. Someone else who knew the same loneliness as her....and who wanted to keep her with him, against her will. ]
You're the one who kidnapped me! [ She yelled back, eyes filled with annoyance and anger. Yet beneath them there was a sense of sympathy. This wasn't how things were suppose to turn out. ]
I'm not staying here. [He needed to let her go. Though they are enemies, there is a part of her that doesn't want to hurt him. She had to go. She had to help the Resistance, and find Luke. It was painful to know she found her soulmate, and now she had to walk away from him.] Move aside.
no subject
No. I won't let you go.
[His hand hovered over his lightsaber. Still, he didn't ignite it. If there was even a chance to salvage what was between them, this was the only chance he had.]
no subject
Then come with me.
[The words flew out of her mouth before she had the chance to think about it. If he wouldn't let her go, then why not go with her? He could walk away from this with her.]
You could come with me, we could leave this. All of this.
no subject
I can't. My place is here.
[There was uncertainty in his voice. He'd already started thinking for himself when he'd chosen not to tell Snoke that he'd found his soul mate. Could he really do it, turn his back on the Dark Side of the Force, all for her?]
no subject
He wasn't sure..maybe, just maybe she could guide him.]
Are you sure? Because my place isn't here, not with the First Order. [She was going to take a big gamble by what she was about to say next.] Shouldn't your place....be with me?
[They didn't have much time for him to figure it out. Either he would join her...or she would fight him. Funny, she was giving him the same option as he'd given her before, only this time she was dangling something he so desperately wanted right in front of him...
If she stopped to think about, what she was doing to him was no better than what Snoke was doing--manipulating him into choosing what she wanted.]

He slammed his fist into the wall of the corridor with frustration. It wasn't fair that he had to choose between the power he so desperately craved and the woman who was destined to be the love of his life. He had to make a decision. The Stormtroopers were looking all over the base for Rey and soon they'd find both of them.
Kylo took a deep breath and made his decision. He wasn't sure that it was the right one, for it did nothing to stop the turmoil in his head, but at least now he had made it and would stick by it. His hand dropped away from his lightsaber as he closed the space between them. One hand rested on her shoulder in a hard grip.]
I can't lose you. Just promise me that we'll be together no matter what. [It was the kind of request a child would make. Then again, Kylo Ren didn't have the most emotionally developed mindset.]
no subject
Someone who was strong in the Force, but had no idea what kind of power she held.
He needed to make a decision, and quickly. The Stormtroopers were beginning to come closer to them. Unless he wanted Rey to be thrown back into the interrogation room. She was snapped out of her thoughts when he came towards her, his hand no longer on his lightsaber. He made his choice...she was his choice.]
We'll be together, promise.
[Those words could come back to haunt her, but in having him touch her....it felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She held the blaster with one hand and placed her free hand on top of his.]

The first thing they have to do is get as far away from the First Order as they possibly can. There's a hangar full of ships in front of them, everything from TIE fighters to cargo ships. Most can be manned with minimal crew, which is something that will work in their favor.]
Can you fly?
[Kylo knows how, though it's been a long time since he was at the controls of one.]
no subject
I can.
[Of that she is certain. She can fly a ship, the question is how well she could. She's never flown a TIE fighter before, but it shouldn't be that difficult.
Although they may not have to steal a ship. Someone else has landed on Starkiller Base, someone who might feel familiar to Kylo Ren. Finn, Chewie and Han were on their way for Rey.]
no subject
[He stops in mid-sentence, whipping his head around. Kylo's just sensed an all-too-familiar presence on Starkiller.]
Han Solo. [While he could do without the family reunion, where Han is, so is the Falcon. There's no other ship that can touch its speeds. If they can get on board, they can make a clean getaway. Then Kylo can start figuring out what he's going to do and how to keep Snoke from finding the two of them again. He closes his eyes, reaching out with the Force, trying to pinpoint the location of his father. They're already on the base somewhere. Something tells him to go to the left. He tugs on Rey's arm.]
We need to go this way,
no subject
[She looks in the direction he's facing, seeing nothing there. There's no one down that hall. Was someone else or something else calling to him? Was he going to go back on his word? When he finally let's Han's name leave his lips, confusion and puzzlement settle on her features.]
Why would he be here?
[Because she can't fathom someone coming to rescue her. She doesn't think anyone would come back for her. They didn't before.]
Let's go. [He can lead them to where Finn, Han and Chewie on. Funny, with Finn she told him to stop holding her hand, but with Kylo Ren...if he continues to hold her hand, she won't say anything. No, they need to depend on each other right now if they wanted to get out alive.
It wouldn't take them too long to find the trio, they had barely entered the base and were trying to find out where Rey was being held captive.]
no subject
He's come for you...and for me.
[Kylo leads them through the base, pausing every so often as he adjusts his course. Avoiding the troops is easy enough, and as long as he focuses on the task at hand, he doesn't have to think about his father or Chewie. He didn't want to think about them, about his family, knowing all those long, lonely nights he had seen through Rey's eyes where she had waited for her's when he had deliberately thrown his away.
When they finally find the trio, Kylo lets Rey be the first one to approach. He awkwardly hangs back, unsure of what sort of reception he's going to receive. How can he even explain to his father and uncle that the only reason he's doing this is because he's found his soul mate and is unwilling to lose her? It's pure selfishness that is still driving him. One look at his father's face and he knows that his family wants him back. They're so easy to forgive him for the blood on his hands and the mistakes in his past.]
