[ Something came down from the sky, large, bright like a star itself as it fell, burning all the way down. It crashed a fair distance away, yet the booming sound carried far and wide, drawing attention to itself from the various tribes of the Men, from the orcs, and from the elves as well. They too made the choice to investigate, something that would normally be ignored, couldn't be this time, as close as it was to their borders. It could be anything and it could pose a threat, and threats they had enough already, to leave yet another one unattended would be foolish.

The crash site wasn't difficult to track down. The trees burned for a long while, even in the northern chill of the winter. Thankfully the fire didn't spread, it died where it began after a time, leaving in its wake a track of black, charred tree stumps. The elves followed the black path, though they did not come out to the razed ground, staying hidden among the trees instead. And still hidden they discovered exactly what it was that fell that night.

Sort of, anyway.

They saw what they saw, yet they had no name for it, a massive construction of metal and glass as far as they could see. No arrow was nocked to a bow, no knife was drawn in the shock that lasted until the first noise drew their attention. They scattered along the unscathed wall of the wood, bows bent, and seeking through the wreckage for the source of it.

Legolas too perched upon a thick branch, his short bow nocked with an arrow, as he scanned what he could only call a hull of some sort of a ship, ripped open and torn apart. A figure was moving through it, carefully but with clear determination. Even from the distance Legolas could see it was a Man, though his garb was strange, completely foreign to any of the folk living in Middle-Earth and probably beyond as well, if Legolas had to guess.

The order, for now, was to keep observing, keep watching to see what exactly they were dealing with, and to listen for orcs as well. They too would inevitably show up, drawn to the destruction and a chance to ravage. ]

[ they'd managed to destroy the alien vessel that attacked them, but not before they'd lost power and ended up caught in the gravitational pull of this m-class planet. there wasn't anything they could do, and with gravity systems failing, only a handful of life pods had been launched.

they'd crashed and jim came to a few hours later with the world tilted upside down and his back to the cracked viewscreen on the bridge. his head was throbbing and sulu had climbed down in order to help him up. they'd started to regroup, collect the injured and dead, and figure out what they could do to set up a distress call and get off this planet.

it was about a half day later that they found themselves under attack and overrun. they didn't have the manpower to fight off the intruders, and most of the crew was taken. jim had been injured during the attack and cut off, and left for dead, he presumed. so---coming to again---wasn't exactly a joyous occasion.

he'd been scrounging, climbing through the ship for another day maybe? he'd ditched his gold uniform shirt, and gotten what he could off the intruders who'd died in the attack. after he grabbed a phaser rifle, hand phaser, tricorder, and a rucksack full of rations and meager supplies. he had to get moving, or at least get out of the wreckage of the enterprise before it got dark again.

jim didn't like the idea of being caught out in the open if more attackers came, so once he climbed out of his ruined ship, he headed for the nearest tree line. ]

[ The leafless branches whispered softly with the motion of the elves hiding in the tree canopies - it could have been a breeze, the wind blowing from the mountains nearby -, no other noise betrayed their presence or whereabouts. They followed the steps of the stranger, surrounding him the deeper he came into the woods. It was Legolas who came down to the thickets and soil, bow bent still and ready to shoot at the first sign of a real threat. So far he saw none, but to underestimate now would have been a grave mistake, more than likely.

An arrowhead reflected a ray of light, glinting dangerously moments before it was aimed right at the stranger's face form a few paces in front of him, obstructing his path.

No point in speaking Sindarin, he could tell that much right from the start, so when Legolas addressed him, he spoke the common speech. He had many questions, especially so about that devilry the Man was leaving behind, but the first thing leaving his mouth was something else- ]

Trespassers are unwelcome in our woods, [ Though he tried to put it out of his mind for now, his gaze still flickered to the sight behind the stranger, before settling on him again. ] who are you and what is your purpose here?

[ Other than razing a good chunk of their trees. ]

[ jim had run a scan of the surrounding area, but nothing had come of it that was out of the ordinary. he had the phaser rifle out in his hands as he moved through the foliage, just in case, but the last thing he expected was to come face to face with the point of an arrow.

the amount of done with this day---damn it all to hell. the last thing he wanted was another altercation with another pre-warp people on this planet. he needed to regroup, find who he could, locate some lifepods, and rescue his crew. he didn't have time for this.

and of course the universal translator wasn't working. he's thinking, maybe, he got the gist of it though. if they wanted him dead, he'd be dead. at least he could make out some of it. it was close enough to federation standard. ]

I didn't realize this was a part of anyone's territory. I only want to find my people. [ he was tense, eyes flicking away from the other man and toward the trees. if there was one, there were likely more, and he wasn't liking his odds.

he wasn't in any shape to be taking on an unknown number of assailants. ]

My ship crashed here and a number of my crew were taken. I'll find them and leave. Please let me pass.

[ The speech was strange, just barely matching up to the various accents and dialects of Westron that Legolas had been taught in his life. He narrowed his eyes, watching the Man carefully and trying to work out the meaning of his words. He understood some of it, or at least the most important message the words were meant to convey-

People were taken, a ship crashed, and oddly so, Legolas thought he heard a plea. Men were proud and arrogant, at least so the great many stories he had been told all his life said, Legolas himself had little dealings with them. The Dunedain were honourable, and so was Bard the Bargeman, but the others not so much.

This little information already told a lot, but it also beget more questions to be asked. ]

Is this metal monstrosity that lies there- [ He nodded sharply back, towards the wreckage, but his gaze was fixed on the Man's face this time. His hands didn't twitch or move with the motion, aim impeccable. ] -what you call a ship?

Who was it that took your people? It was not the elves, you will find nothing in the forest.

[ jim kept a wary eye on the guy with the arrow on him. this was unnerving, he knew the guy couldn't be alone. well, he figured he wouldn't. the other people they ran into weren't alone.

he also didn't have time for twenty questions, but he needed to get out of this region unscathed. well---at least not worse off than when he walked in. he casts a glance back towards the still burning wreckage of his ship, the crew he was unable to save still inside her, and his jaw clenches. his expression shutters a moment before he looks back to the alien. ]

Yes, that's my ship.

I don't know. Look, all I want is a place to rest, and if you don't want me here, fine. I'll go back out there and find somewhere else. I don't want any trouble.

[ Whatever Legolas was about to respond with was lost in all that happened next. It was one of the scouts yelling out from somewhere above them in clear Sindar about incoming orcs, heading from the wreckage where they came across it themselves. Legolas heard them himself before they even came into view among the many bare trunks of trees, and he reacted instantly changing his aim from the stranger's face to shoot instead over his shoulder.

The arrow flew silently and it found its mark with ease, lodging itself firmly in the skull of the first orc to show his face.

Smoothly, like in a dance, he stepped forward and pushed the man behind him, before quickly nocking another arrow to his bow to shoot the next enemy. He shouted an order back to the elves in the tree tops, similarly in Sindarin, and the whisper of branches trembling beneath their steps answered him. They fanned out, and they too began shooting. Legolas himself stayed on the ground, he had been seen already and besides there was that mortal to consider as well. A stranger, sure enough, but one that held answers to the questions Legolas had. All things considered, it was in his best interest to keep him alive. And so he stayed down to protect him, putting himself between the threat - the charging orcs - and him.

There was twenty-five of them, a handful already felled. They weren't a particular challenge for the elves. ]

[ the shift and change in the man he was speaking to was quick as he was. jim saw it but hardly had any time to react before he felt the rustle of air as the arrow went over his shoulder.

jim turned, watching as he effortlessly waded into the fray with others of his people against----whatever the hell those things were. he wasn't so proud to admit he was out of his depth here, and when he was pushed back behind the man with the bow, he went without complaint.

but challenge or not for these people, jim wasn't exactly accustomed to letting other people fight while he stayed on the sidelines. their ship had already done irreparable damage to this world, not only on a physical level, but exposing them to technology far beyond their capabilities. spock would have an earful for him, and hopefully still be alive enough to give it, when he finally found his crew again.

especially after he brought his phaser rifle up to bare and fired three shots in rapid succession at the attacking enemy. normally, he might have simply stunned them, but after what happened with the other peoples---save this new one---he wasn't keen to find out if they were chatty and wanted to be friends. the three creatures the blasts hit fell with smoldering holes in their armor and chests.

he didn't have time for this. ]

[ Legolas started when something shoot on his side and towards the orcs. At least the target was right, but the source of it was something unknown, like a blaze shot through the air at a speed even greater than that of an arrow released with the greatest of war bows. It broke his concentration, his focus shifting as he turned around to face where these flames came from, eyes wide in shock, breath held.

Behind him a couple more orcs fell, shot down by arrows his people let fly from the trees. With the Royal Guard on the task, few would be able to break through to them. Still, it was most unwise to turn his back on the enemy, Legolas would know - remember - that once things calmed down, but right now his thoughts were elsewhere, his gaze fixed on the strangely shaped metal in the stranger's hands, frozen mid-gesture in drawing another arrow from the quiver at his back.

The metal contraption seemed to glow with the same colour of the bolts of flame at its tip, and immediately he could tell that this was what let them loose.

A cry from somewhere above shook him out from this moment of confusion and forced him into action once more. With the lower arm of his bow he hit the stranger's hand to dislodge his weapon, before he spun - drawing an arrow in the same motion - to shoot the incoming orc that managed to come close. Two arrows were already sticking out from his shoulders, then a third, Legolas's own, lodged firmly in the orc's throat. That finally downed him, black blood bubbling from his mouth as he took another two steps closer and fell with a loud thud.

The rest fell too, at long last, and then Legolas was facing the stranger again. The blade of his newly unsheathed long knife found his throat, to stop him in his tracks from retrieving his weapon. ]

Do not move.

[ He was far more dangerous than Legolas initially thought. Still, he did not shoot him in the back as he easily could have, he did not run either. Which was exactly why he wasn't beheaded right there and then. ]

[ jim wasn't going to run away from this fight, even if it didn't seem like they needed his help. what he didn't expect was to have his phaser rifle knocked from his hands by the other man's bow. he hissed in annoyance as it was flung away from him.

the other alien fell, but not before taking another arrow, and then jim was stopped from retrieving his weapon by a knife edge at his throat. he froze in place, eyes wide. ]

Look, I was just trying to help. I don't mean any harm, I just want to find my people.

[ he still had his phaser on his belt, but he didn't think he could pull it before he ended up with his throat cut, or a number of arrows sticking in him. ]

Please.

[ Though the words were a haze, some easy to understand others not so much, but the tone was clear. A tone of urgency and desperation, and understandable frustration if what Legolas so far understood was correct. His people were missing and he wanted to find them, Legolas knew he would be furious if he was in his place. All the same, the safety of his people and his forest was at the forefront of his mind, and this safety did not necessarily line up well with the stranger's priorities.

He narrowed his eyes, removed his knife though he did not return it to the scabbard just yet. Instead he walked the few feet towards the orc corpse, to grab the head by the scant hair to lift it and show the face. Glancing over to the stranger, he asked in a pointed way, wishing to convey his meaning whether or not the Man understood his words. ]

Is it those creatures that took your people?

[ If that was the case, or if it were trolls, then Legolas would have no good news at all. Orcs did not keep prisoners, while trolls would have made a meal out of them. There would be hope only were it the Men of the Mountains, because they took people for slaves. ]

[ jim could understand legolas' desire to protect his own and that a stranger's priorities would come last, but that didn't negate the fact that this was costing him valuable time. but maybe---just maybe there could be something good to come of this. if he could convince the other man that he wasn't the enemy---he'd know this place better than he would.

maybe he could help him find his captured crew.

his face twists a little at the showing of the corpse (bad guy or not), and it takes him a second to parse the question so that he can respond. he shakes his head as he answers. ]

Then you are in luck.

[ For what it was worth anyway, these people were still in danger but not so immediate, and the chances that they were still alive were high. Legolas released the corpse and let it fall back down on the soft soil. His own arrow had snapped in two when the orc first fell, but the arrowhead could still come in use. It now protruded from the back of the neck of the orc, he retrieved that with no kind thought wasted for the dead. He removed the other two arrows as well with greater care, but for the sake of the weapon rather than the orc. Both were returned to his quiver, a valuable resource they could not afford to simply leave behind.

There were many more where the orcs first appeared. Legolas called out some orders for the elves, to gather their arrows, to strip the corpses of anything useful and burn the bodies. Only two he asked to assist him with the stranger. The reaction was instant and over a dozen of elves dropped from the trees to begin. Two of them, tall and broad and auburn of hair, approached Legolas, hands on their weapons, ready to defend their prince at a second's notice.

Then Legolas turned back to the stranger. ]

Men travel slower, and they do not kill their victims but wish to sell them for slaves rather. [ That was one good news Legolas offered, then: ] We will aid your search and we will help you rescue them.

[ What came after was still up in the air, but these strangers couldn't be allowed to wander freely. ]

What is your name, sorcerer?

[ more elves drop down from the trees, and damn were they quiet. they probably hadn't even needed his help to start when it came to the orcs, but that was no nevermind at this point. jim watched the two approaching the one who had him at arrow-point earlier, warily.

he felt a little relief at mention of who would have taken them and what they would do. his only concern is that they would try to escape at any opportunity. ]

If they try to escape? [ it wasn't an if, but he didn't feel it necessary to explain that. more relief, then, at mention of helping him search for and rescue them. he only had a tricorder, and it wouldn't cover as much ground as the sensors from the ship that he might have preferred. so what his tech wouldn't cover, hopefully they could with their knowledge of their world.

they'd deal with whatever happened after reuniting, after. but his expression shutters, and he blinks a bit dumbly at legolas when he calls him that. uh. yeah. right. clarke's law in action. advanced science would be indistinguishable from magic.

spock is going to lecture him to death after this is over. if he's even still---no. he's not about to start thinking like that. ]

James Kirk. Call me Jim. [he wonders if pointy 2.0 has a name. might as well ask. ] You?

[ he also nods over towards the phaser which had been knocked from his grip. ] Mind if I have that back?

If they attempted escape, there is no certainty in their fate.

[ That was the truth of it, Legolas wasn't about to offer false hope.

A long pause followed those words, Legolas's eyes settling on the artefact on the ground. It made him uncomfortable, the sight of it there and having seen what it was capable of. It was a dangerous weapon, that much was certain, and especially so in the stranger's - Jim, as he asked to be called - hands. Still, Legolas himself had no desire to risk touching it. Just how dangerous would it be to leave an artefact like that just lying around for orcs to find? Yet at the same time Legolas wasn't sure any of the elves should touch it either, there was no saying what sort of sorcery went into making it, and if it would accept the touch of anyone but its master.

Yet Jim hadn't used it against them yet, though he could... thus Legolas was willing to give a small show of trust, one that came with a warning though. ]

You seem an intelligent Man, you will know better than to try to use it on us. [ He might harm one of them, which would be a great loss in its own right, but the price for it would be the Man's own life. As many arrows would pierce him as there were elves remaining, in less than the blink of an eye. So Legolas nodded his assent, though a degree of wariness was still showing in the way he looked at the item. ] It is yours, do not leave it here.

[ Though sooner or later, that along with other possible weapons, would need to be stripped off of Jim. For now, it would be best if he was armed himself as well. ]

My name is Legolas.

Then that just means I really need to get going.

[ jim saw the hesitation in the other man's eyes, and he imagines it's disturbing to think of something so powerful in another's hands if one isn't sure they aren't an enemy. he's been there done that, with a crazed admiral an a massive warship versus his much smaller ship. it's never fun.

he moves slowly to retrieve his phaser rifle, and slings it over one shoulder for now as he picks it up. he doesn't want to bring it out again unless he has to. anyways, these guys seem pretty good on the defending their own. ]

Legolas, sorry we had to meet like this. We didn't mean to cause any trouble.

[ jim feels like a walking bruise, at the moment. the second time he'd woken up, his head had been stinging, but it wasn't so bad that he thought he had a concussion or anything. he'd pushed on through his search of the wreckage to find supplies. his gold shirt, ditched back on the enterprise because it was too flashy, had blood on it, but he paid it no never mind. ]
