Nonsexual Romance

NONSEXUAL romance

Romantic relationships, under most circumstances, have a sexual component to them. That's just another level of connection many desire with the one they love. Not so the case with you. You're with someone, and both of you very much acknowledge it's some sort of relationship, but you're not with-with them - not sexually. Whether you're just unexperienced and not ready to move to that level yet, believers in romantic friendship (or that situation is more convenient, given your time and place of residency), unable to consummate anything due to physiological differences or other issues, celibate, or simply content with the intimacy that you do have, it's a mutual decision...isn't it? But is this the way you two see yourselves continuing, without wanting more? And what about other people? If they know you're together, do they see your arrangement as "strange" or "less?"

Even if they do, though, it may not matter; you have each other.

[ inconvenient. spock would describe all of this as inconvenient but when is there ever a day which goes smoothly after he has told kirk not to do whatever it is he has set out to do? this time they were stranded, not far from a crashed shuttle. statistically speaking circumstance could be worse. this is an m-class planet lacking in larger beasts in its biosphere. their chance of being eaten may still be low. ]

This is an appropriate time to use the phrase 'I told you so'.

[ after all, the excursion was not his idea. ]

The planet is tropical, if nothing else.

[ he prefers the heat, as mild as it is. ]

[ there was no indication of any hostile peoples or pre-warp civilizations on this world. there was an overabundance of species of plant and animal life, however, and none of them were coming up on their sensors as anything they'd run into beforehand. jim didn't have any reason to think that anything untoward would happen---

like a random em storm that formed while they were coming in for a landing.

they weren't due back for a few hours, but they had sent a distress call, along with their last readings before the crash. they should be able to find a way to beam them out through the interference, or send another shuttle once they figure out what happened. only being a little banged up from the crash, the more immediate thing to work out was shelter in case it got dark, and a fire to keep wildlife away. ]

That's hilarious, Spock. You've been hanging with Bones a lot.

[ he isn't actually all that upset about it, though. he expected it, just in more vulcan terms. ]

Anyways, even if I go when I'm not supposed to, it doesn't mean you have to follow me, so I don't really get how you're putting this all on me.

You could be up there comfy in the captain's chair instead of tromping through the brush with me.

[ some worlds thrive with no civilization at all. while it is not completely unprecedented it is strange they have found no sentient alien species on a viable planet. unless they mean to conceal themselves and thus this would give purpose to the storm. he had thought over several hundred other scenarios but only to keep his mind busy. for them, this was standard practice by now.

getting in trouble, that is. ]

Are you suggesting I can only use a colloquial turn of phrase by exposing myself to the good doctor?

[ don't sass him. he is your first officer.

he pushed passed some of the taller plants to a clearing. the truth being he had no further explanation of his actions. logically, he could choose to stay behind but he seldom wanted to. meandering aboard the Enterprise was not. . .as fulfilling as some of these explorations. perhaps he and his prime self differ in that he allows for. . .measures of spontaneity when appropriate. ]

Part of my placement requires consultation, and consultation often requires active rather than passive action. [ excuse. ] Furthermore I was not currently needed on the bridge.

[ they do go through rotations in crew. ]

[ some do, and they've found a number of worlds with an abundance of new flora, fauna, and wildlife to keep starfleet scientists busy for years to come. and hey, wow, no. jim does not always get into trouble. he has a penchant for it maybe, but it isn't like you can place bets on the odds of it happening or anything.

he's gonna have a talk with the crewman who started up the betting pool having to do with that when he gets back cause, yes, he did find out about it. ]

I'm saying it's more than likely to happen after you've been exposed to him for an extended amount of time. I would almost say he brings it out in you. Or I do.

[ jim'll sass you if he wants. captain's prerogative. ]

And active action being following me and hoping that I don't spontaneously develop an allergy to anything out here? I think you and Bones worry too much. I have everything with me, and Hendorff was perfectly willing to come down here with me in your stead.

[ he and cupcake actually get along pretty well these days. funny old universe. ]

[ quantifying the amount of time jim actually spends out of trouble is inherently impossible due to the figure being infinitesimal. spock often wins said bets but he will not be revealing his part time participation in "childish games" as he put it before robbing several other crew members of a decent sum. ]

It's a compulsory reaction. [ the smallest tilt of his head with the quirk of a brow. ] Hendorff can accompany you for exploration on the next planet.

[ he sounds dismissive, more than usual.

his gaze shifts toward the ground, spotting moss. ]

There is a water source near by. This location should be adequate until another shuttle is brought down.

[ well, it's a good way to make a couple of replicator rations on the side. jim doesn't get into trouble all that much these days---okay, maybe that's not true. he tries. that counts, right? it totally counts. ]

Is that all? If you frown a little harder your face is gonna get stuck that way.

[ hey, whoa. take it easy with that tone of voice. you'll hurt his feelings. and look, jim came prepared like he was supposed to for a survey mission. he's got a tricorder out from his belt, taking readings of the moss, and then scanning the area ahead.]

Yeah, I got it. It's about 20 meters ahead.
