sam had figured out who she was pretty early on into their routine, but it wasn't until now that they'd exchanged more than a few words. it emboldens him to be tough, to treat stevie like he might one of his charges here. then again, it might just be the surroundings making him behave like he normally would. ]
What makes you happy? [ it's a loaded question, but his tone is lightly imploring. as if urging her to say the first thing that comes to mind. ]

[She tries to make it sound innocent like she can't figure out what to have for breakfast. The honest truth is nothing makes her happy. Her moments with Peggy are always destroyed by her illness. She doesn't really have any friends since everyone has largely went their own way since New York. They were the only ones she felt any connection with since waking up. Natasha and Fury aren't exactly trustworthy. She's lonely. There's a reason she walks through her old life.]
WHY DID I DO BRACKETS HERE AND NOWHERE ELSE THE WORLD MAY NEVER KNOW
It isn't easy, but the sooner you can answer that... the sooner you can live your life. [ real life. not the life 'they' want you to lead. ]
part of your charm tbh
How did you? [Again she tries to keep it light, but there's a desperation beneath the surface. She hates living like this.] I mean you must needed some time to get back in the world. How did you figure it out?
arbitrary brackets gtk its a charming quality
It's day-by-day, you know? It goes slow at first, I'm not going to lie. I'm not saying I've got it all figured out yet myself, either. This place helps, I can make a difference here.

I felt good about New York. Don't get me wrong. I'm less sure about the rest of it these days.

Come here, I wanna show you something. [ he leads his way back into his room now that it's been cleared out, motioning for her to come sit in the circle with him. ]

[She makes herself a little smaller as she glances around. The place still seems so big and inaccessible to her. Her problems can't really be theirs, can they?]

When you hold this ball, you have to get everything off your chest. From your day, your life, whatever's bogging you down. [ his eyes narrow, but there's still a smile behind them. ]
My turn: I can't win against Captain America in a race. I know what you're thinking -- no mortal man can. But it really, really grinds my gears that she's so smug about it.
[ sam throws the ball at her without warning, a bit of danger mixing in with bemusement and concern. ] Now you go.

[Her eyes open then and she smiles.] My only comfort is that somehow I'm still faster than you. It's amazing really. I can't even get anywhere and yet I still run laps around you. How does that even work?
[She smiles smugly and tosses it back to Sam. Did she successfully make you forget how she feels used and empty inside? She hopes so.]

Comfort is good. Like beds made of marshmallow... [ he recalls their earlier convo, tipping his head. ] But it's temporary. Maybe you're not getting anywhere because you're on the wrong track.
[ there's zero judgment in his voice, only fact. if this doesn't work, try something else. it's all very logical when broken down. ]

[Stevie stands up and look down at him fondly.] Thank you for hearing me out, Sam. I should probably be getting dinner and make my way home. I have a lot to think about.
[Unlike Nick Fury decides to hide out in her apartment and drag her into a conspiracy. What are the odds of that?]

But if you need anything... [ that sounds lame, he sighs. you have his number etc etc. ]
