It's that reminder that keeps Hartley from stealing what little supplies they have and leaving in the dead of night. Well... and the fact that he wasn't exactly doing a stellar job surviving on his own before they ran (ha!) into each other. Still, he'd much rather be traveling with the Rogues than with the guy who gained his trust, made him think they were friends, and then destroyed his life. It's getting more difficult every minute they spend together not to break down and yell, or to just say to hell with it and attack (and most likely attract zombies in the process). Because spending this much time together alone with Harrison after everything that's happened between them is really beginning to mess with his head.
Or maybe that's the hunger and thirst. It's getting a little hard to tell. They only have a half a bottle of water left and even less food to keep them going. If they don't find something soon, Hartley won't have to worry about zombies or even them killing each other anymore.]
It's going to get dark soon. We need to find somewhere safe to stop for the night. Maybe a house? Somewhere we might find more supplies.
[This is the first time Hartley's spoken in hours. Normally he'd toss snide comments Harrison's way every few minutes, but they've been walking for a long time and right now he's miserable, exhausted, and can't think of a single insult clever enough to be worth the effort of opening his mouth.]
no subject
This is not to say he can't survive, or even still make it back. But it would take years, far more than fifteen. The idea weighs on him. He hasn't been able to maintain the imperturbable, closed off facade with which he uses to deal with Hartley on a normal basis. Mostly, he just hasn't responded.
With so little food, he has to conserve use of his speed. The wheelchair lighter, no motor, stolen from a clinic; where would he charge his old one, these days? is less a farce than ever. If at any point he runs out of speed force and becomes truly unable to walk, they'll both be in trouble. Right now he can get them out of tough situations, but how many more can he afford? Even if they find food, it will never really be enough for him. ]
If it has two stories.
[ Short, yet somehow, polite. A to-the-point exchange that lacks the adversarial tones that should characterize all their conversations now, given what he did, except that he's not the one who has anything to be angry about. All he's ever shown, albeit for Barry's benefit, was a sort of restrained regret.
He couldn't say now whether that facade comes from somewhere else, if the man Harrison Wells used to be is responsible for that. Not that it matters, at this point. ]
no subject
But as much as he'd like to blame everything that's gone wrong in his life on Harrison, it seems unlikely he's actually to blame for this particular situation. Harrison doesn't seem any happier about this mess than he is. So no, this isn't one of the many things he can throw in Harrison's face, no matter how tempting it may be. That doesn't, however, stop him from throwing his real past misdeeds in his face every chance he gets. Not that it seems to matter, since Harrison doesn't seem all that interested in engaging his attempts to pick a fight.
He wonders if that means they really are done with the games. He supposes there's not as much point to them now that the world's gone to hell and they're forced to rely on each other to stay alive. If things were different between them, if circumstances were different, they might have made a surprisingly good team. As it is, they're managing to make it work for now. But he's not sure how much longer this can last if something doesn't change soon. They need food, water, and at least a temporary shelter.]
We'll find something if we keep walking. If we're lucky, we'll find a house, supplies and a car and we'll be able to take a break from all the walking.
[Luck hasn't exactly been on their side lately, so that seems unlikely. He's beginning to think it's time they come up with some sort of plan. Something better than wandering aimlessly away from the city. It would mean having to be civil for longer than a few minutes, but Hartley's willing to try if it means their (his) continued survival.]
I think I see something up ahead.
no subject
[ A sentiment which seems to indicate further departure from the chess metaphors of their past, and in fairness, on the surface, perfectly appropriate given the state of the city. Harrison is thinking about it, though. He's thinking about the military base out this direction; he's thinking about the minimum distance they need to be from it before he can risk expending his speed to get them both there immediately. He's thinking about what, or who, might be there.
Mostly, he's thinking about how Hartley would react. If using his energy to carry someone who might turn on him the instant he realizes what happened, or the larger implications, is really worth it. ]
Gas station?
[ Oh, good, the traditional extremely creepy place to get ambushed by zombies. But they don't have much of a choice about checking it out. ]
no subject
[Hartley's trying really hard to tamp down his rising frustration, but it feels like they're getting nowhere. Taking things one step at a time is all well and good, but so far there's no concrete plan and they desperately need one. Especially since he's not actually sure they're on the same page regarding where their little journey ends. He's aware that if they keep going this direction, they should find a military base, and there's plenty of reasons that should be their final destination.
But he's not sure the pros outweigh the cons. Sure, there might be food and water, and he might even find his parents there, which would certainly give him one less thing to worry about. But he knows the Rogues won't be there, and he knows there's no way to predict what kind of state they'd find the military base in. All it takes is just one person hiding a bite for even the safest place to go to hell.]
Looks like a gas station and maybe a diner?
[Hartley hasn't had great experiences with places like these so far, so he'd love to go right past them and never look back, but he gets the feeling Harrison won't go for that. They do need to find supplies.]
no subject
[ It must be a gift, his ability to be so effortlessly ominous in the midst of an already overwhelmingly ominous catastrophe, though it's only three words, and like before, perfectly polite. Maybe it's the incongruity, though, that continued calm in the face of awful odds though Hartley might still know him well enough to see the tension in it, that it is as deliberate as almost everything he's ever done. ]
If you'd rather not, I'll go.
[ And that would seem like quite an offer from him. It was meant to be. They're not quite locked into a prisoner's dilemma because a pure prisoner's dilemma never truly occurs in real life, and it certainly doesn't take into account the kind of personal history they have, or superpowers. ]
no subject
There's a lot I'd rather not do, but I'm not going to be able to avoid every gas station we come across.
[For once he's not saying no just to be contrary. As much as he wants to take Harrison up on his offer, he knows it's not practical. There are things they need and they might find them in there. They have a better chance of getting out of that hellhole if they stick together..]
It's not safe for you to go in alone anyway.
no subject
Audaces fortuna iuvat.
[ And he rolls onward, no hint of physical exhaustion though he can't be used to the manual wheelchair.
Some of the pumps look like they're in bad shape, perhaps hit by a car, but the ground is dry. Only a couple windows in the diner are broken. The automatic doors of the station's tiny convenience store have been pried apart, and the inside is dark and quiet. ]
no subject
He hated having to check out gas stations back when he was traveling alone, and finally having someone with him doesn't offer as much comfort as he'd like, considering his current travel companion is wheelchair bound and, well, probably a psychopath.
It's unlikely there will be much left in the convenience store worth taking and he definitely doesn't like the look of the place, but if they're careful and lucky, they might find something.]
So. Convenience store first?
no subject
Might as well.
[ There's the sound of flies as they near the convenience store, but it proves to be less disgusting than one might fear. They've been attracted to spilled soda, not a dead body. The shelves have been ransacked; if Hartley investigates behind the counter, though, there might be something tucked away. Harrison will have to leave him to it as long as he's set on staying in the chair for as long as possible. Even walking, though, is a small drain. His fault for dealing so harshly with this body, fifteen years ago. ]
no subject
Stay away from the door and windows while we're in there.
[He's pleasantly surprised by the lack of zombies (and the living) inside the convenience store. The flies are annoying, but at least there's no corpse to go with them. As he suspected, there's not much left to find in the store. The shelves are empty and most of what's left in the refrigerators have already gone bad. It's not until he finally checks behind the counter that he decides this hasn't been a complete waste of time. Apparently whoever ransacked the place wasn't nearly thorough enough because he manages to find an unopened bottle of water, a book (it's Fifty Shades of Grey, but still) and a gun and some ammo.]
So I'm aware you kept a gun at your tacky house, but do you happen to know how to fire one?
no subject
Harrison hadn't bothered to respond to his instructions. The debris on the floor limits where he's willing to try going, in any case. Out of the mess, however, he picks up some cheap lighters. At some point they might need a fire, and the book might actually become useful in spite of its contents.
House insults don't get any response, either. It is vaguely interesting Hartley knows about the gun. He glances that way, a hint of his earlier dark humor showing in his otherwise deep reserve. ]
Yes. [ His tone suggests in as mild a way as possible that that was a silly question. ] Do you?
[ He doesn't sound like he'll demand it even if Hartley doesn't. He doesn't expect a handgun to be that big a help against zombies, and against humans, the point of a gun is almost as much psychological as it is a real defense. ]
no subject
He smirks, shoving everything but the gun in his backpack before approaching Harrison. He has absolutely no intention of telling Harrison how he knows about the gun he had in his apartment. It's not important anyway.
What is important is that they have one more weapon now. Which is great, really, but...] Guns aren't my thing.
[Which is why it's no hardship to hand the gun over to Harrison. Hartley's satisfied with the weapons that have kept him alive so far. Besides, he gets the feeling the gun would be much more useful in Harrison's hands than his own. He starts looking around again, hoping maybe there's something he's missed but all he manages to find is a pack of cigarettes (which they might be able to trade for something useful the next time they run into something), and a packet of wet wipes (definitely useful).] I don't think we're going to find anything else here.
no subject
If we're ... disturbed by anything in the diner. I hope this is an easy favor to ask: just go. Don't waste time trying to help me.
[ If they were anyone else, it might come off self-sacrificing or altruistic. Hartley of all people knows him better than that and should have already been planning on that line of reaction anyway, so the 'favor' might sound strange, as casually as it was said. Harrison tucks the loaded handgun into the side pocket of the wheelchair, within easy reach of his right hand. ]
Ready.
no subject
We'll see. It depends on what might disturb us in there. I'm not running from a couple of zombies, but I'll get out of there if things get too bad.
[The favor does sound strange, especially because he does know Harrison. Harrison's just not the kind of man who would sacrifice himself like that, so he must have some reason to believe he'll survive if things do go pear shaped. Just one more thing they might have to talk about later. The list seems to get bigger by the minute. He really hopes Harrison doesn't make him regret handing over the gun..
Hartley heads over to the diner, slipping in as quietly as possible and leaving the door open wide enough for Harrison to come in behind him. He really hopes this won't take long.]
no subject
The smell of spoiled food, rotting meat, and death. Flies here too. This time the only thing behind the counter is a headless body, the blood beneath dry. The entrance to the kitchen is too cramped to admit a wheelchair, and inside is very dark.
From somewhere in there comes a weak thump. Silence, then another weak thump. It doesn't sound like it's coming closer. It sounds, maybe, like something hitting a door. ]
no subject
As much as he despises gas stations, he'll take the one they just came from over this diner any day. He tries to avoid staring at the headless body, but keeps a look out for the head (just in case) as he looks around. It's a little hard to see with the only light coming in through the broken windows, but the place is such a mess, that it might be a while before they find anything worth salvaging anyway.
He pulls out his latest weapon of choice (a knife) when he hears the thumping coming from the kitchen. Best case scenario, it's a zombie. A weak zombie that he can easily take care of. Worst case scenario, there's an injured person in there that they'll have to take responsibility for.]
You look around out here. I'm going to check the kitchen.
no subject
(And for the sake of the present, never mind the future, Barry had better still be alive out there. Harrison might just lose his mind if he's stuck here in the past.)
His mouth is pressed shut on anything like "be careful," because that kind of thing can be an incitement to Hartley. Justifiably so. Whatever distant affection he feels or felt, it never outweighed considerations of usefulness, then as now. ]
I wish you'd consider something with a longer range.
[ A reflection of their different outlook on dangers and burdens.
The weak thumps continue. In the darkness of the kitchen, a few workstations have been pulled away from the wall and piled against the door of the walk-in freezer. The repeated blows from inside have shifted the blockade only a few inches. ]
no subject
Which is why it's more than a little grating when Harrison criticizes his choice of weapon. It's not even a real criticism and it's certainly not one Hartley completely disagrees with anyway, so he's not sure where the urge to fling his knife at Harrison's face or the temptation to tell him that he wishes Harrison would consider being less of a lying, selfish, manipulative psychopath is coming from. He does neither of those things, and he manages to come up with a slightly more civil response. Maybe their talk won't be a complete disaster after all.]
If I find something with longer range, I'll use it. For now, this works just fine.
[Hartley shrugs his backpack off and takes the flashlight out. The battery probably won't last much longer, but it should at least last long enough to let him see where he's going while he's in there. If the workstations blocking the door of the walk-in freezer is anything to go by, he probably only has to worry about dealing with a zombie. Should be simple.]
I'm going to deal with what ever is in the freezer. You keep looking for stuff out there.
no subject
Be careful.
[ There's not much to look at in the main part of the diner. Condiments, smashed glasses, rotted food. The head is nowhere to be ound out here, an unsettling detail.
Meanwhile, the thumping continues, so rhythmic as to feel mechanical. Mindless. Their conversation was not loud, but the nearer Hartley gets, the more urgency the thumps will gain. The tables shudder once or twice, the one stacked on top inching precariously towards falling off. ]
no subject
He doesn't respond and he doesn't need to. He values his own life way too much not to be careful and Harrison knows it. He knows Harrison won't be taking any unnecessary risks either, so he's silent as he approaches the freezer.
He suspects the zombie in the freezer can hear him, despite how quiet he's trying to be. He listens to the thumping for a moment, silently debating how he wants to handle this before finally pulling the table stacked on top to the floor. It comes down loudly, but that doesn't matter. The zombie already knows he's there. Once the tables are out of the way, he opens the freezer door and moves to the side, quickly leg sweeping the zombie the moment it starts to come out and shoving it down to the ground.
It's harder than would be if he weren't so damn close to starving. He's weaker than he normally is, but clearly the zombie isn't in the greatest shape either, because it goes right down after the shove. All he has to do now is shove the knife into its head and he'll be able to look through the freezer in peace.]
no subject
There's no way to distill the process past moments and reactions. The sound of the table falling to the floor, and he tenses. Hartley gets the zombie to the ground, the knife moving into position, and Harrison examines the angle, the possibility that what's left of the zombie's facial structure, the underlying skull, will make the knife difficult to withdraw. Not a problem, as long as the zombie in the freezer is the only one.
The kitchen has a back exit. The door there swings open as another decaying shape stumbles inside, drawn by the sound of the table. Harrison has the gun in his hand, calculating. Will he be able to get at least two head shots in time? Are there more zombies that will be drawn by more noise? Is Hartley's knife stuck, can he deal with it himself? ]
no subject
He gives up on the knife and glances around for a new weapon (he doesn't see Harrison at the entrance to the kitchen, but that's probably because his glasses were splattered with zombie blood), noticing a broom near the entrance and more knives on the counter. but he won't be able to get to any of these things in time before he's attacked. His only option is to try to fight it off unarmed and hope for the best. He could try getting it to the ground and just kick its head in, but he doesn't want to risk it grabbing his leg. Grabbing it by the hair and bashing its head into the edge of a counter or even the floor is another option, but he'd either have to get behind it somehow or reach behind it and risk getting a chunk taken out of his arm in the process.
He doesn't have enough time to think of another plan (he barely has time to stand up again), because the zombie is close now and Hartley will just have to go with his instincts. He kicks out the zombies leg as it approaches (because why stray from what works), but just as he slips behind it, it grabs his arm and pulls him down with it. It doesn't bite out any chunks of his flesh, but that's only because he's holding its head back by the hair. He'd like to slam its head into the floor, but his trapped arm is in the way and he can't seem to get it out of its grip. He could try calling to Harrison for help (at the very least, Harrison could try tossing him a weapon), but it doesn't occur to him to that he might need to.]
no subject
[ Now might seem like a bad time to be asking for his attention, but Harrison sends the gun skittering over the floor to within reach of Hartley's trapped arm. That, at least, he can turn his wrist enough to plant the barrel right against the zombie's head while it's still held away.
Harrison is sure he can hear more noises outside. ]
no subject
The shot is loud, magnifying the ringing in his ears for a few moments until he thinks he might throw up or pass out, but he does neither in the end. Instead he pushes the zombie away and gets up, looking disoriented as he looks over at Harrison again.]
What part of stay in there did you not understand? Do you just tune me out when I talk?
