Detective?

[ here's an odd sight: bruce wayne out of the manor. the boy wears a thick blue jacket to ward against the chill outside. instead of a drink, he clutches a paper bag, weighted by whatever he purchased. ]

[ Jim shifts upright in his seat, his attention torn away from idly watching passers-by out the window at the sound of his title. Mild surprise registers on his face for a fleeting moment before he smiles. ]

Bruce. Afternoon. [ He just catches himself before he asks, is everything okay?, instead substituting: ] It's good to see you, how are you?

[conceptualise]

I'm well, thank you. [ the smile is returned, the corners of his eyes crinkling softly. ] Are you on break?

[therewillbelight]

I am. I've got... [ Quick glance at his watch. ] Another forty-five minutes. Would you like to join me, do you have time? [ He gestures at the chair across from where he's seated. ]

[conceptualise]

[ he debates staying — alfred said to return promptly — but not nearly as long as perhaps he should have. ]

Thank you.

[ bruce slides into the seat opposite, setting his purchase on the table. next to the bag, he folds his hands neatly one on top of the other. ]

How has your day been?

[therewillbelight]

You're welcome.

[ He shrugs slightly, his smile still in place. ]

Busy. They all are. It's a good kind of busy today, though.

How about you? Are you and Alfred on your way home from school?

[ He's not going to come out and ask, where's Alfred?, but he's got to gently pry to make sure the guy's nearby, or at least knows Bruce is in the city. ]

[conceptualise]

[ bruce shakes his head. ]

I'm being home-schooled. Alfred and I agreed it best suited my learning speed. It allows me to skip past academic areas I've already mastered and focus on those that interest me.

[ it also stops him from breaking tommy elliot's face. again. ]

[ Jim nods, thoughtful; he's somehow not surprised by this. Alfred had told him Thomas Wayne wanted his son raised according to his standards. If this is how they're going to meet it, he hopes it works out. ]

So what brings you here? Homeschooling assignment? Shopping?

[conceptualise]

I'm — visiting a friend, actually.

[ bruce wayne has friends?? ]

[therewillbelight]

[ ...He's got friends? That's good, right? Kids are supposed to have friends? How does one adult role model, is he doing it right. ]

That's great. I hope I'm not keeping you...?

[conceptualise]

No. She-she wasn't home.

[ three guesses who she might be and the first two don't count. ]

...Ah.

[ He gets it. He doesn't quite have the heart to point out she's not likely to be found if she doesn't want to be, unless there's trouble. ]

I'm sure she'll turn up. Is there any way to leave her a message?

[conceptualise]

I did. I'm sure she'll [ break into the manor ] call as soon as she can.

[ his voice rings with certainty. whether it's naiveté or faith in her is impossible to tell. ]

[therewillbelight]

[ Whichever it is--and Jim has his doubts about Selina's reliability--Jim's too decent a man to dash any hopes Bruce might have. He merely smiles, nodding.

You never know. The kid could surprise him. It's not his place to say otherwise. ]

Yeah. She'll turn up.

So you and Alfred were traveling recently?

[conceptualise]

We were. [ bruce makes a moue. still a little miffed with alfred despite knowing the man's heart was in the right place. ] Alfred insisted on it.

[ Jim lets out a thoughtful hum; that's all he's going to say about that. He's sure Alfred did what he thought was right, but he can see how it might feel like needless running, cowardly hiding, to Bruce. ]
