it was strange, though. he had seen bashir when he first arrived, he was the doctor who took care of him, but nothing had happened. at least not until he'd woken up for the second time, and julian's face swam into view. he'd spent most of his life seeing in monochrome, and he'd gotten used to it. he'd nearly rolled himself off the biobed in shock when, after a bout of sharp pain in his head, everything (literally everything) was in bright color again.
he handled it with decidedly less grace than his usual, and spent the next two weeks avoiding dr. bashir. not to mention avoiding what he's dubbed as his fan club.
so, today, he's found himself in a little nook that he's found for himself, a book (one he'd managed to barter for) in his lap as he watched the stars.]

At any rate, he'd accepted it. It was likely that when his genetics had been tampered with, it had done something that rendered him incapable of finding a true soulmate, and he'd gotten some slight color vision in recompense. Or that was what he'd thought, at least.
The first thing he'd seen in full, striking color, had been the eyes of a man who shouldn't even be in this timeline.
He wondered what would happen when Chief O'Brien determined what had caused the wormhole to spit him out here, and he and his crewman were sent back--the uncertainty, and the fact that Kirk had been avoiding him, not even wanting to talk about it, made sure that Julian avoided the displaced Captain just as much as he seemed to be avoiding him.
At least until Jadzia got involved and said that if Julian didn't go talk to him, she was going to lock them in a cargo bay until they did.
He knew she'd do it, too. He supposed that's what he got for telling her. But the idea of approaching made him terribly nervous, so he was standing just out of sight, fretting. What was he supposed to say?
And then he felt a hard shove, right between his shoulder blades, the hand the right size and warmth to be Jadzia's, and he was going to put something unpleasant in her raktajino--but for now he was stumbling forward, into Kirk's--Jim's--line of sight, nearly tripping over his own feet.]

maybe he was making things up to soothe his frazzled nerves.
he was about to call it quits, take his book, and shuffle back to his temporary quarters after checking on his crewman, but then julian was stumbling into the area over his feet. he found himself getting up before he could stop himself, and reaching out to grab for his arm to steady him. his book tumbled to the floor in the process.]
Dr. Bashir---hey, are you---[he stopped, breath catching briefly at the realization that he was so close, actually touching him, and god, why the hell was he feeling like a kid with his first crush? he'd been attracted to plenty of people in his time. he was kind of known for that.]--you okay?

Julian nervously straightens his uniform. He's got as much of a reputation as Kirk does, hell, he'd purposely cultivated it. But he feels completely out of his element here.]
Yes, yes...I'm perfectly fine.
[Embarrassed, but fine.]
no subject
he pulls his hands back a little as the other man straightens his uniform.]
Good. That---uh, was almost bad.
[he pats his shoulder, and turns to retrieve his book from the floor. he carefully smooths out the pages that had been a little rumpled, and closes it.]
no subject
Julian looks back up at the pat on the shoulder, and is once more struck by just how blue his eyes are.]
Erm. I suppose it was. Your book didn't get banged up too badly, did it?
[Julian knows the value of paper books, they're so incredibly rare anymore.]
I'm sorry about that, really I am.
no subject
[he chuckles at the apology.]
Really, it's okay.

He smiles, fleetingly, nervous like he's never been before in a situation where he's with someone he likes, who's attactive, smart, funny...granted they hadn't talked much because it's been wholly uncomfortable but what interaction they have had...well. Julian had always heard that it sort of hit you like lightning, and he had to agree with that assessment.
Damn. He's falling hard. This is going to go nothing but badly.]
Ah, good.
[Seemingly convinced this is going nowhere fast, a Bajoran fruit that looks rather like a pebbly apple comes flying at Julian's head--lobbed by Jadzia.]
Hey!
no subject
he still feels way out of his element here, standing in the other man's personal space and ---it's just really strange, okay? he never counted on anything like this ever happening.]
Yeah, so, uh, don't worry abou---Hey!.
[said just a second or two after the fruit was lobbed in julian's direction. jim may not have expected company, but he also didn't expect it to come with its own mini-warzone. he acts before he thinks and grabs julian's hand (his other still holding the book), and tugs him towards the other exit.]
Come on, before I have to come up with some daring story of a battle against the exotic fruits of wherever that's from to explain why the doctor ended up in sickbay.
[no, he's not letting go. at least not until they get out of there and somewhere they aren't going to be attacked by flying fruit.]
