Come in and sit awhile

the Coffee shop meme

Your character finds themselves in a coffee shop:

maybe your character works as a barista
maybe they're just unwinding after a long day at work
getting their caffeine fix in the morning
maybe they're on a date

whatever the reason; everyone's welcome.

[Not a problem! I'm okay with slow. Let me know if you want me to change something.]

In general, Carol is more of a regular coffee kind of lady. But there's something about the seasons bleeding between fall and winter to make her crave a peppermint latte.

Apparently the rest of New York has decided the same, because her favorite coffee shop is packed when she heads in. By the time she has her mug in hand, there's not a seat available except for one all the way in the back. Maybe the man seated at the table won't mind sharing.

"Hey, sorry, do you mind if I sit with you?" It's not until the words are out of her mouth that she recognizes that it's Captain America. (She's been to the Smithsonian exhibit.) Part of her would love to share day-saving captain stories with him. But since he looks like he rather just chill - her goal as well - she'll internalize the excitement.

This wasn't his usual place for coffee; there was a tiny, almost hole-in-the-wall place near his apartment that was his usual haunt. The owner was sick though and the place was closed for the day so he'd gone out looking for a quiet place to sketch for a while.

This coffee WAS quiet, but slowly as the hour went by it started filling up more and more until there was a constant buzz of conversation threading with the radio music piping through the store.

"No, go ahead." He offered Carol a polite smile as he indicated the open seat opposite him with a nod and picked up his cup of hazelnut mocha on the table.

"Thank you," she said as she returned his polite smile, pulled out the chair, and quickly sat down before someone else could. "I'm Carol, by the way. Let me know if I'm, I don't know, sipping too loudly." Not that she expected to, but she figured she should let him know that there wouldn't be any hard feelings if he no longer wanted to share his table.

Beyond the introduction she wasn't going to force any conversation on the poor guy. She could see his sketch pad on the table. For her there was plenty of people watching or playing on her phone to do.

Steve' lips twitched upwards in another smile. "What slurping noises you make will be covered up by that group over there, I'm sure." He nodded his head a nearby table of four boisterous college students. "Nice to meet you, I'm Steve."

He's not sure whether she recognized him; more people did often than not and more than once he'd had to fend off questions and requests for autographs while he's out and about in public. While he doesn't mind those if the requester were polite sometimes he did want to be left alone.

Carol turned in the direction of the college students and shook her head. It wasn't out of anger or annoyance, just more of a 'that figures.' Turning her attention back to her table mate she gave him another smile. "Pleased to meet you, Steve. I'll still try to keep the slurping to a minimum."

She wasn't sure if she should bring up recognizing him. It wasn't that she wanted a picture or an autograph, but it seemed weird not to recognize it. Maybe she would wait to see if there was a less awkward time to mention it.

Steve picked up his half-full cup of coffee and took a sip from it. "Same here. Feel free to tell me off if my slurping gets too distracting." He doesn't really mind the louder-than-they-should-be college students. They were happy and enjoying themselves and it was nice to see something like it when most people had their heads down and hurrying along on their own business.

He gave Carol another polite smile and turned his attention back to hi sketchbook.

Carol took another sip of her coffee and then turned to face the window. She liked people watching when she could find the time for it. In general she liked to be moving, doing, but she also understood the importance of taking a few moments to relax.

After a few minutes her curiosity got the better of her and she snuck a quick glance at her table partner's sketchbook.

It wasn't just one scene on the page, there was bits and pieces of everything on that page, from the plants the coffeeshop keeps in one corner, to a advertising from across the street visible through the window, to the barrister and to fellow coffee drinkers in the shop.

He'd started a new one of his seatmate when he spotted her looking at his sketchbook. "Sorry...did you mind me drawing you?"

Carol shook her head as she set her mug down on the table. "Oh no, not at all. I was just curious as to what you were drawing. You're really good."

Actually, she was kind of flattered. As far as she knew nobody had ever drawn a sketch of her. Well, there was that fan art of Captain Marvel circling Tumblr, but this was the first time in-person.

"It's kind of like photographs...some people don't like their photographs taken without permission." Steve shrugged and took a sip of his coffee. "So I was kind of rude in a way."

He smiled in response to the praise. "Thank you. I'm a bit out of practice with sketching people so..." He shrugged again.

"Eh, maybe a little. But I don't mind, really. I mean, unless you're going to turn around and sell it for a million bucks, but I have a feeling you won't." She grinned before taking a sip of her coffee.

"However, if you do, I'd like a cut. Ten thousand out of the million will be sufficient."

Steve didn't think he was all that bad at drawing, out of practice maybe, and he used to sell sketches and comics to the newspapers to augment his income but he definitely wasn't all that good either. He supposed that some people would buy 'Captain America's' sketches but the entire idea makes him cringe.

He can't help but smile at her joke though. "It's a deal, if I ever make it as a world-famous artist. You'll probably waiting for a long time for that ten thousand though."

Oh, plenty of people would buy Captain America sketches. But it's probably better that he doesn't do that.

"Eh, take your time. I have plenty to keep me busy. The extra ten thousand would be nice, but I won't expect it."

"Very practical of you." Steve shaded in a bit of a clothing, absently wishing he was working with charcoals instead of the single pencil he'd brought along with him today. Charcoal would give more life to the drawing than the pencil could.

"So what do you do that keeps you busy?"

She hesitates to give him an answer. Should she give him the standard 'private security' line that she gives others? He's Captain America, he'll see right through it.

"Have you...have you heard of Captain Marvel?" She looks over at him, her fingers tapping on her coffee cup. "Because if so, well, that's what I do."

tbh I know very little about Captain Marvel

Steve blinked and sat up straighter (not that he slouched very much in the first place, certain things about military training carries across all aspects of life).

"I've certainly heard your name a few times but not much in detail."
