Come in and sit awhile

the Coffee shop meme

Your character finds themselves in a coffee shop:

maybe your character works as a barista
maybe they're just unwinding after a long day at work
getting their caffeine fix in the morning
maybe they're on a date

whatever the reason; everyone's welcome.

"Excuse me, miss, you dropped this." Yes, that is her wallet that this handsome young man approaching her table has in hand, offering it back to her. "You ought to be more careful; next time, whoever finds it might be less honest."

Clara did not notice her wallet went missing, not with her attention on the text message on her mobile phone. It's when Loki distracts her from her conversation with Danny that she perks up. "Oh?" She looks a little confused, as she places her phone down on the table beside her and she peers into her bag where her wallet should be.

She blushes in embarrassment, and places a hand over her chest in relief. "I should be more careful." She reaches a hand out for her wallet, and in jest, she goes to offer the kid a reward. "Thank you, and if you'd like anything on the menu it's my treat. Really, thank you very much."

"Really?" Loki's eyes light up, and he grins at her in a way that makes him look at once very old, and very young. Maybe slightly favouring the 'young' side, at the moment. "I'd appreciate it-- One of those delightful peppermint-and-chocolate coffee beverages would suit me marvelously, I think."

"Of course! You could have been a proper hoodie, and wandered off with my wallet to empty my bank account," Clara's voice is teasing, as she stands up from her chair. She casts a glance down at her own empty coffee cup, and she motions for Loki to follow her.

"And you're sure that's all?" She asks, when she stops at the counter with her money in hand. As for the old smile on a young face, Clara doesn't miss a beat. The strange and unusual are normal for her even during a normal day. "I'd think this amount of honesty deserves more than just one of those peppermint mocha drinks."

"Well... I wouldn't say no to one of those oversized scones," he says thoughtfully, as he follows her. Really, emptying the bank account of anyone short of, say, Tony Stark is beneath him; too easy, too rude, and Verity would give him that look.

He hasn't disappeared this time and it almost feels like a step in the right direction. He hasn't jogged off back to the TARDIS and punched in the co-ordinates for 13th Century Turkey to get her some extinct coffee beans. He's barely even thought about that one planet a few thousand light-years away, where they inject a caffeine-like serum into your fingernails and it keeps your hands busy for a week.

For once, he's just queuing. Just standing there, awkwardly trying to avoid physical contact with the man hovering much too near his left shoulder and simultaneously looming over the heads of people in front of him in his grey-stick-insect way and trying vainly to make himself look smaller.

Being normal, pretending to be human, fits him about as well as one of Clara's tiny coats.

Clara wants to see if The Doctor is even capable of normal for once, as she waits in the long queue. For just this once, she might even consider coffee from a far off planet or some point in history. She shifts from side-to-side to see just why they're visiting a cafe with the longest wait. But it is perfect, the wait means The Doctor has to put up with doing something human for once.

She turns around to look at The Doctor as they continue to wait. With a neutral look on her face, Clara looks up at him. "I really hope this place is worth the wait. I heard they've got the best coffee and scones in all of London." But she knows this has to be hard for him. Sure, he's an alien, and sure, he lives a life in the fast lane. But for her sake, she enjoys the time she gets to breathe.

"This has to be driving you completely mad, waiting," She leans in closer to speak in a whisper. "Waiting like the rest of us."

"I can do this," he whispers back, rocking up on the balls of his feet to gauge the length of the queue and pointedly not looking at Clara. He doesn't sound all that convincing. "Course I can. Look, I'm doing it as we speak."

He glances sideways at her, disturbed to find her smiling, and his crazy eyebrow draw together into a highly unimpressed scowl.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you? You're actually enjoying this." This. Not just his squirming but actually being here, doing this, standing around. "Sometimes I think there's something seriously wrong with you."

Clara rolls her eyes in disbelief. "No you can't. You couldn't do normal if you wanted to. You might be trying, but deep down inside this is eating you up inside." She still loves it. He gets to do things how every other human or thing in the universe does. However, she won't admit the line is getting to her. She just won't admit her displeasure with the wait; the point of all of this is to make The Doctor squirm just a little bit.

She leans herself against the window of the cafe, with a devilish smile on her face. "Oooh, you know me too well. I think this is going to do you a lot of good. Who knows, their might be a reason this line is so long. These places have book signings or some other celebrity appearances you know."

There's the sound of a saxophone that can be heard playing through the glass window. And at a quick glance, there's a jazz band inside playing. They must be good to draw in a crowd this large. Or perhaps the coffee truly is something from out of this world. "And I know you're hoping this is all some big alien ploy to draw the in the masses."

"Seem fairly obvious if you ask me." Peering easily over her head, he scowls - can't help it, it's just how his face looks these days - through the window, suspicious about this whole thing all of a sudden. "That trombonist is clearly a Vogan. Just look at that forehead."

Not to mention that being in what is evidently quite a trendy coffee shop, with music and ambiance - whatever that is - is suddenly starting to sound too much like a date. A real, proper date and, frankly, it's a little terrifying.

He taps quickly at her elbow, intending to draw her away. "Let's just go somewhere else. It's not much of a night off if we have to stop another alien incursion, is it?"

[personal profile] braveheartclara 2014-11-24 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Clara looks at the trombonist with a skeptical look on her face, and then back to The Doctor. "Oi! You don't just don't want to be here." She thought the idea of being somewhere trendy did make for a good date, but she wasn't going to stick around if The Doctor was obviously uncomfortable with the whole idea.

At the tap of the shoulder, and a look of disappointment on her face she steps out of line. "I suppose you're right, and I still don't think these guys are aliens. And if they are, perhaps they're just there to play jazz and not take over the world." Traveling with The Doctor has instilled a bit of faith in her about the rest of the galaxy.

"Anyway let's find somewhere a lot less popular, and we can have a nice sit down."
