There's no need for elaborate backstories for this AU. You go into heat, rut, whatever you'd like to call it. You've always done so since you were of age to do so. It's a socially accepted norm, and people have gotten used to the difficulties that come with the mating seasons. Life goes on.

Isn't this alpha/beta/omega, then? No, not at all. In this meme, there are no gender-variant genitalia unless your character comes prepackaged with those. No giant cocks - again, unless your character is already packing - or self-lubricating assholes or anal wombs, and no knotting. Unless that's your thing. There's also no set in stone roles with regards to dominance and submission, and some people do not even feel the inclination towards either. Still, there are a few similarities, mainly being that the pheromones of others can put someone into heat that was not in it before and the bond between mates. In addition, some humans/human-stand-ins have created packlike dynamics in response, but this is not universal.

In this meme, it's just regular old human...oids feeling the urge for sex. And by "urge," we of course mean all-consuming drive. If characters choose to ignore that urge, it will backfire on them. The more they put it off, the more they will lose their control, becoming more irritable and aggressive, and eventually be nothing but a rutting animal until the need to mate is satisfied. Not all heats call for mating, of course, and most people can just relieve themselves, but when you do mate, you feel the urge to stay by their side and essentially "nest." These desires don't always pan out into offspring, and mating isn't forever unless it's mutually decided upon. However, impregnating your mate is said to be one of the most euphoric experiences a person can have, even if some people only mate because they want to utterly possess someone, as mates are bonded for a while.

[It's been a fairly quiet day for Hikari, mostly because he'd only come out of his room to briefly grab food and had immediately gone back inside once he was done eating. It didn't seem like he was upset, but he had barely spoken to anyone. After breakfast, he'd stayed in his room reading to distract himself (which wasn't very effective). He'd even skipped lunch, which he knew someone would come to talk to him about -- most likely after already eating any food that might have been meant for Hikari in the first place.

Maybe it was irresponsible to be avoiding people, but, well... something had just felt off all day and the longer he stayed away from everyone, the more uncomfortable he felt.]

[Right was the only one who spotted Hikari that morning. He was in the middle of saying "good morning" when Hikari had walked by him back to his room...and Right had gotten a good whiff of the scent coming off of his friend. Earthy, with some dark spice mixed in. It was surprisingly familiar enough to trigger a flash of memory in Right: himself lying in bed, moaning and feeling far too hot, with Hikari hovering right over him, both of them wearing disheveled, unbuttoned school uniforms... While it didn't feel horrible in anyway - quite the opposite, in fact! - it did leave Right blushing, which confused him all morning as he tried to get himself to remember more of it.

It didn't help that he was starting to feel a little warm and uncomfortable himself by the time lunch rolled around. What really confused him was when Mio took one whiff, and started acting very strange - like someone was telling her that she had fallen in love again. It really upset Right to see Mio sitting as far away from him as she could while they were eating.

However, Tokacchi and Kagura did help Right figure out what was going on with his body...which, in turn helped Right remember the rest of that one time with Hikari. And that, in itself, both caused a bright blush on Right's face, and helped him realize why Hikari might not be feeling well right now.

And why Hikari might need some help with dealing with this "heat".

Thus, Right found himself peeking into Hikari's room, carrying some obento and drinks.] Hey, Hikari... Mind if I come in?

(Hikari's not interested, but it's fine if Right wants to go that route. It just might make Hikari a bit more possessive in this scenario.)

[The sudden appearance of Right was expected, especially with how the other had absolute no regard to knock on Hikari's door first. Hikari sighs and sits up, looking for the first thing he can find to put a mark on his spot in the book, not sure when the next chance is that he'll get around to working on it. They've been keeping pretty busy lately and with Right around, it was always difficult to get a moment of peace. Not that Hikari minded so much because of how highly he cared for his friend, but sometimes it was nice to have space to himself.

When he notices the food Right is carrying, Hikari gives the other a rather confused look. Was it actually possible that Right hadn't eaten lunch? ... no, it was more likely that Right had somehow gotten himself a post-lunch meal in addition to Hikari's. He still couldn't be completely convinced that Right hadn't eaten his original meal either.

Hikari sits up more and pushes himself so his back is pressed against the wall, tilting his head curiously at the other.]

[Right, missing lunch? He would have to be deathly sick for that to happen. Plus, no reason for him to knock on Hikari's and Tokacchi's doors - they're both guys and best friends. No need to be formal on that point.

Right grinned in response as he entered the room, making sure that the door was fully closed behind him.] You kinda missed lunch, so I brought some leftovers for you. [He moved to set down the food and drinks on a nearby nightstand before sitting down near Hikari on the latter's bed.] Not like you to miss out on eating with us, though. The others are wondering if you're feeling okay. [While he didn't outright tell them what might be going on with Hikari, Right did remember that they were concerned about Hikari being holed up in his room during mealtime.]

Mm... It's fine. I guess I'm just not feeling well today.

[Right suddenly being so close to him brings a huff of breath and elicits a shiver from Hikari, who takes it upon himself to scoot away and grabbing one of the drinks from the nightstand as an excuse for doing so. Of course, the group would care enough to be worried about him, but it was still difficult for him to be as close to all of them as he knew he should be. It was one of the perils of being so serious all the time and being unable to let himself relax.]

It's no trouble, really. We're friends, after all. [Right, though, was starting to feel a little nervous. Being close to Hikari, breathing that scent his buddy's giving off... It stirred up feelings within him - feelings that are not normally shared between "just friends".

But how to break it to his dear friend... Well, might as well do it like he always do - casually.] Hey, Hikari...have you gotten any memories of our high school days yet? I think I got one this morning.

[He unscrews the top to the bottle and awkwardly drinks it down, trying very hard not to pay attention to any of the signs he's picking up from Right. Not that ignoring anything today as been helping him.]

What did you remember?

Let's see... [Right laid down across the width of the bed, his lower legs hanging off the side. He looked up at the ceiling as he continued.] We still went to school together, and we were still in the same class. It was a huge comfort back then, still hanging around each other all the time.

But one day - I think it was shortly after Mio became class rep again - I started to feel really funny and warm. I wanted to stay home, but it was a test day and I promised you guys that I'd pass it with all of you. It was really hard to focus during class. I kept sneaking out to get some water to cool me off because I felt so hot. And when the others started fussing over me during break...

[Right closed his eyes; that heat wasn't just memory right now, and it was starting to build.] Mio put her hand to my forehead... [He put his right palm against his forehead to show what he's talking about.] ...and Tokacchi did the same with my cheek. [The back of his hand rested against his cheek as an example.] And Kagura kept asking if I was wearing my dad's cologne, because I smelled really, really nice. [His hand tracked across the side of his jaw and down his neck to tug on his shirt's collar.]

It was really strange, being so hot and feeling so weird about myself...but it also felt really, really wonderful having them close to me...but... [Hikari, meanwhile, should be picking up on Right's scent by now - light and airy and sweet...]

[All of Right's talking seems to ping something within Hikari. His stomach twists and his face flushes red as he attempts to give all of his attention to his drink while still listening to the other. Had it just become hotter in the room? The talk of Right having needed to drink something at that time was making Hikari go through his own a bit faster.

As for picking up on Right's scent? Hikari was pretty sure he'd been doing that all day, without realizing it. It was only with Right's story that he was starting to piece things together, to understand why he was so uncomfortable. It was difficult to watch Right touching himself so much, though he knew he should have been used to the other's actions by this point.

It's also now that Hikari realizes his hands are shaking slightly and how tense his body is. Well, this is quite the exercise in self-control...]

[Right opened his eyes to smile warmly at Hikari.] You insisted on dragging me personally to the nurse's office, away from everyone. You also explained that you weren't feeling too well yourself, and told the others that it'd be better if we went together.

Once we got there, the nurse knew immediately what was going on, and kinda locked us in there while she ran off to tell the principal. [His hand traced down his chest towards his stomach as his face turned bright pink.] You...kinda had to tell me the part of Health class that I slept through one time - the part about what was affecting both of us. And...you helped me. Really helped me get through it, even after we managed to make it back to my home afterwards.

[His blush deepened as he took a deep breath.] You told me, back then, that we were going into our first heat, and that you didn't want the me in heat to be around anyone else - not even the others. To be honest...once it got past the first bit, it felt really good.

[Right sat up then, tucking his legs beneath him.] You helped me back then, Hikari. And now...I wanna help you back, since you're in heat now. [He reaches one hand out towards Hikari's hands.]

Hikari's face was certainly bright red at this point. Yes, he could remember that time now, how possessive he'd felt over his friend, his hands grabbing at the other's clothes and body, pinning him down, never being able to touch him as much as he wanted.]

[He doesn't sound too convinced, instinctively trying to pull his hand back once Right reaches for him, though he forces himself to stop, watching his friend carefully.]

[Right didn't look convinced with that answer, either. His hand closed around Hikari's gently, comfortingly.] No, you're not. You're not really yourself. You haven't been out of your room all day except for breakfast. You even skipped lunch, and I know you don't do that at all. And you're all tensed up, too, instead of being all laid back like normal.

[And here comes the pout and pleading tone as Right scoots closer to his friend.] Please, Hikari? Please let me help you. We can even switch places, if you want - me on top, you on the bottom. I can be gentle...or as rough as you were back then. That wasn't all that bad, now that I think about it...
