Pfft spoilsport :P Angst it is then.
Maybe it doesn't help that his first real memory of attending one is of standing with a set jaw and a thousand-mile stare at his parents' graveside, scarcely even seeing the distant flashbulbs, strange and blank and empty and wondering distantly if there was something fundamentally wrong with him for not feeling more. He'd done his grieving later, though, and if from the outside it might have looked an awful lot like trying to wreck his life without ever even reaching twenty...well, that's no-one's business but his. He got over it in the end.
Obie's funeral wasn't the most fun he's ever had either. He'd thought his face might crack from the effort of maintaining the forced expression of dignified grief plastered across it. It'd taken everything he had to pretend that he was mourning a beloved mentor and father figure, not making sure the bastard who'd tried to murder him three times over was safely buried. Fortunately the whole affair got buried pretty quickly under the Iron Man thing, otherwise he's pretty sure he would never have got away with it.
Right now though, he feels a little like he'd rather go through either one all over again than be standing here, at Peggy Carter's graveside.
She was 'Aunt Peggy' when he was a kid, when she'd be around (for SHIELD business, he knows now, even if he hadn't at the time) and she'd take the time to talk to him, rather than at him or over his head, as was more common. He'd gone off the rails after Howard and Maria died despite her best efforts, but he feels like if she hadn't been there, maybe he wouldn't have found his way back.
The funeral was held on a bright, warm afternoon, and was well attended by friends and family. There was some degree of solemnity, of course, but Peggy had led a long and full life, and it was hard to be too grim in the face of joyfully shrieking great-grandchildren tearing around at knee-height. For once in his life Tony took great care to be precisely the opposite of the center of attention. He'd sat in silence near the back through the simple memorial service, and slipped away again before anyone could really notice him.
It's later now, the sun hazy and red as it slips down to kiss the skyline, and Tony tucks his hands into his pockets and considers the fresh grave with an unreadable expression on his face.
God, he needs a drink]

He'd been surprised as anyone else when he'd woken up and the world was seventy years older and not a day wiser. He'd been as surprised as anyone when he learned just what winning the war had cost, and just what it had gained. He'd been as surprised as anyone when the skies had opened and aliens poured through and nearly destroyed New York and somehow netted him a new team as diverse and crazy as any of the Howling Commandos on their best day.
But the dust had settled, and the war (again) seemed to be won, and he'd looked through SHIELD's files and found that one Margaret Carter, founder, was still alive. She was in a nursing home, suffering from late stage dementia, slipping from his fingers faster than he could catch her, but he had to go, had to see her. She had brief moments of clarity, times when she remembered him, and what he'd told her about the serum and being alive and the ice, remembered that he hadn't died, hadn't meant to stand her up, that he'd come back. And then, of course, there were the times when he thought visiting her was nothing more than torture for them both. She looked at him and saw a ghost, he looked at her and saw the first woman he'd ever properly loved looking back at him with surprise and no little amount of fear.
So he'd explain, again, how he'd survived, and try to rationalize the woman he had in his head (he'd seen her as she was not too long before the ice, and she shouldn't be this old, his Peggy. She shouldn't be this frail. A blink ago she was the strong, take-no-crap commander--) with the reality of the situation. And then he'd stay until one of her nurses came in to shoo him out, or a child came by, or she forgot again and it was obvious his being there didn't do much but hurt her--
And then there had been HYDRA and SHIELD and being a fugitive and the country that he loved turned to fighting itself and he hadn't been in to visit her because he'd been running for his life and a month after everything had settled down he went in to find her room empty and a sympathetic looking nurse who told him kindly that Ms. Peggy had passed away quietly in her sleep. She'd held his hand and promised him that she didn't suffer and squeezed his shoulder and he'd thanked her and left.
It turns out he hadn't missed the funeral. It was a bright day, and he'd feel like that was a betrayal of some higher order if it weren't for the fact that her family is there, and they're vibrant and there are children and grand children and he feels somewhat like an interloper, standing in the middle of someone's life that he has no real right to mourn. He'd loved her, and he thinks--he thinks she loved him too, but he'd had a fraction of the time with her that these people had.
So he lingers away from the ceremony, he can hear what they say about her -- sweet, heartfelt, and honest -- but he's not the center of the attention because he doesn't need to be. He doesn't need people looking at him when the focus is her and her life and everything she meant to these people.
It's not until after most of them have gone that he approaches her graveside, only to find that someone has beaten him there. And it is, arguably, not the person he expected]

Huh. Yeah, actually, come to think of it, obviously the capsicle would have known Peggy. They'd cropped up together in Howard's war stories often enough. That hadn't quite clicked together for him before, although in hindsight it really should have. For all the stories, in his head they sort of belonged to different worlds; he'd just been a story by then, if a childhood favorite, and she was...Aunt Peggy. Purveyor of life advice (and occasional smacks upside the back of the head when he needed them), and periodic gentle reminders that Howard, despite meaning well was, quote, "a bloody idiot sometimes". At thirteen that was a fairly essential thing to be reminded of]
Rogers [He straightens slightly as he acknowledges the other man in a neutral tone, shoulders squaring and chin coming up. Part of him can't help be reminded of another quiet moment in the wake of a death, deep in the bowels of the older model helicarrier. Shit, at least it wasn't anything like that this time. At least Peggy went out peacefully in her sleep at the end of a long life well lived.
He still can't quite get his head around the fact that she's gone, any more than he could reconcile the frail and confused old lady she'd ended up as with the force of nature of a woman he'd known as a kid. But there it is though, immutable fact carved in solid stone: Margaret Jones, née Carter, 1917-2014. Faithful wife, beloved mother, all that jazz. Greatly missed honorary aunt]
Nice service, huh? [It's said in much the same tone as one might comment on the weather] Simple. No bullshit. She woulda liked that.

It takes him a moment to place why Tony might be here--Howard and Peggy were close (though their efforts in fondue were lackluster, so he learned) and it only makes sense that she and Howard were close after he--well, he supposes fell is the best word. He knows they founded SHIELD together, and following that, it only makes sense that Peggy was around while Tony was growing up. Thinking about it--it makes sense, but he--he hadn't put the pieces together until just now. He feels a bit foolish, but that's the least of his worries when it comes to the emotions of this day and so he accepts it, takes another step forward and tightens his hand just a little more around warmed metal.
His eyes flick down to her grave-- she's gone, and he reads the words printed there even as he tries to swallow around the harsh lump gathered in his throat. Margaret Jones. Margaret Jones who had lived when he had not, had gone on to have a full life, to have children, grand children, a life. A life that hadn't included him. She hadn't suffered, though, and there was justice in that--she'd done her time as she lost her memories, and she didn't deserve pain on top of that. He finds, when he looks back up to Tony, he has to blink back tears.]
She would have. [He agrees, though he fights the insane, instant urge to argue that Tony has no place to comment on what Peggy would and would not have liked. He was not the only one who knew her. He was not the only one who loved her. And just because he didn't know that Tony cared doesn't mean the man has no right to grieve] She was never much one for pomp and circumstance.
no subject
There's a trace of unease in the air. For all that they've clashed less since New York and the nuke/portal incident, there's still great potential for a stupid argument to happen here, and he can feel Aunt Peggy giving him a deeply unimpressed look across twenty years at the mere thought. He'll happily entertain himself by pissing Cap off any other time, but...not here. Not today]
I can-- [He gives an aborted half-shrug and scratches at the back of his neck] Yeah, I should go.
no subject
He's also thankful for the lack of antagonism. Perhaps he is as guilty as Tony when it comes to the headbutting (there's no perhaps, he is as guilty) but he finds that today he has no energy for it. He's spent. There's nothing really left to give.
At the suggestion though he shakes his head, though he doesn't look back Tony's way] No. You--obviously knew her. It's nice to know that someone else did. There's not a monopoly on grief.
no subject
She was just...always around when I was a kid, y'know? [He gives a thin, mirthless smile] She put a hell of a lot more effort into making sure I turned out okay than Howard did. I mean, obviously it didn't go that well, but god love her, she tried.
[It's hard to believe she's gone. She always was a tough old bird, and some irrational part of him had been secretly convinced that when the time came she'd calmly tell Death to bugger off and stop bothering her. If the skeletal asshole had any sense he'd do as he was told.
It's at times like this he kind of wishes in a distant, abstract way, that he believed in...well, anything really. That there was any part of him that could lend credence to the idea of life after death. It'd be kinda nice. Comforting. But he's a pragmatist, an engineer; he deals with what's in front of him, what he can see and touch. He doesn't have to patience for the metaphysical]
no subject
If he'd been a kid, Steve imagines it might have been hard to relate. Or be noticed.
But it's at times like these when he feels more distant from his team than he ever has before. The Howard he knew was a young man, the Howard Tony knows was old and yet here they are nearly the same physical age and yet Steve feels suddenly, achingly old.]
She and Howard were close during the war [He agrees, almost as if confirming the stories in his head, the reasons she would have known Tony] As a matter of fact, I--mistakenly thought they were involved, for a while.
[He can still see Howard's face as the man patiently described fondue and Peggy's when she caught him with a lapful of a blonde receptionist. It hadn't been his finest moment] She always had a soft spot for underdogs.
[For Steve, for a young, misunderstood and maligned Tony, for the commandos] I bet she didn't take any of your shit, either.
no subject
And of course by the time he'd reached the point of being over it, of letting go of that old hurt and bitterness, Howard was already long since six feet under. Maybe in another lifetime they might have reconciled, might have ended up with some sort of decent relationship as adults. Maybe they would have. It's a nice thought. But as it is, when the car crash happened, they hadn't spoken a civil word to each other in months.
He makes a strangled sort of noise, and the expression on his face at the idea of Peggy and Howard is one of undisguised horror. Somehow that bit always got left out of the stories] Holy shit. I'm glad she had more sense than that.
[It's weird to think of Steve, the same Steve he gleefully prods at and has about three arguments a week with, as hanging around with his dad and Aunt Peggy back in the day. It's even weirder thinking about what things might have been like if the capsicle never got frozen. But that's not a thought he has much interest in entertaining for too long.
He gives a soft laugh] Yeah, she sure wasn't shy about giving me a smack upside the head when I needed it. Which was, y'know...a lot [Believe it or not, Steve, the Tony you know is the more mature and mellow version. Tony as a kid was infinitely more of a mouthy little shit.
He tilts his head slightly, giving Steve a considering look] So I guess you guys knew each other during the war, huh?
no subject
He can't help the hint of a smile though at the look of utter disgust on Tony's face at the mention of his father and Peggy. It's been a long time (and surprisingly, not long at all) since she and Howard shared fondue, and it still has the ability to make Steve think of them both rather fondly.
That laugh draws a look and his smile widens just a little at the story. He can just imagine a Tony being cuffed by Peggy and the look she used to give green recruits who thought they could put one over her because she was a woman and happened to be beautiful to boot. The smile vanishes completely when Tony asks about how he knew her, if he knew her and his hand tightens again around the compass, but this time he pulls it out, turns it over a time or two]
We did [He flicks the compass over again, rubs his thumb along the back of the surface and looks down at the freshly mounded dirt at their feet] She was-- [How does he even describe what Peggy was? That she was not only the first woman he loved, but also the woman who motivated him to be more than a show pony, or a dancing monkey. That she was the woman who he carried with him before running into Hydra bases, that she was the only one who made him feel at all human after he lost Bucky. She had been so many things to him and he finds, when given the opportunity, he doesn't have the words to describe it] She was going to teach me how to dance.
[It's all he's got. He will forever regret missing that date. His chest twists, uncomfortably, and he flips open the compass, runs a thumb over the faded picture and then leans down to place it on the sun-warmed marble]
no subject
She was something special [He says it quietly, eyes on the horizon as he steps back to give Steve a moment of space, of something like privacy with the grave. Fuck. This really is it, huh. Man, death is a pain in the ass. It's all a little too immutable for his tastes.
The moment passes and he steps up to the grave himself, giving the compass a long slow look before sighing and laying his hand on the headstone] See you, Aunt Peggy.
[He steps back again, closes his eyes for a moment, and then straightens his shoulders. So that's that then]
I don't know about you, but I could use a drink right now.
