1. Better to be feared or loved?

If I had to choose just the one? Likely feared.

[ Given her interactions with other non-human creatures, especially those of the 'bump-in-the-night' variety, it's an easy conclusion to draw.

And very few look forward to death until they already are. Dead, that is. ]

It comes naturally, a cross look at the guilty party can send them scrambling back to their seat.

No, there are people who are so sweet, you'd think sugar would fall out of them if you breathed on them too hard.

3. That being the case, can people who can't command fear ever achieve real greatness?

I'm sure they can, but they're trapped by their own reputation when they try to do something that will be unpopular.

It all comes down to discipline.

4. What motivates the average man to actual discipline?

If a man wanted something badly enough, that would serve as motivation.

Or you approach it in steps. One small achievement at a time all culminating in a final goal. Use both a carrot, and the stick.

5. And is it better to let men fail instead?

I'm going to need that question to be more specific than that.

Fail personally? As a species?

Well, if it's allowed.

5a. Is it better to let men fail as individuals if they aren't doing well on their own; and

5b. Is it important to intervene if it becomes a matter of the species failing wholly?

It's a competitive world, coddling them won't do anyone favours. If they're smart, they would learn from the mistake and not do it again.

As for men as a species, it would be hard to make any progress if survival was at stake.

I would say it has been a pleasure, though I have to say the topic is far removed from what one would normally expect from regular conversation.

No, I've never had much interest in small talk.

Niceties may have to observed, but the faster they cut to the chase, the better.

They're not something that can be worked around.
