No, rather this had been going on a week now. What was more awkward about this particular night was the frequency and Emily's state each time Corvo would deliver a message back. She was all giggles and rolling around on her giant bed, her mother's old bed. As always he kept his mouth fixed closed, his expression calm and unobtrusive as either Emily or Geoff would pen a letter for him to deliver back again, but it was very awkward. Emily was nearly sixteen now and had been ruling her mother's empire well for several years.
From what Corvo knew of her this was her first crush, and he was stuck in the middle of it. The Heart had been quiet too through all of this, as Corvo had not taken her out from the soft cloth bag she was normally kept in these days. She went everywhere with him though; she had since the first day she'd been given to him. Corvo stared down at Geoff, thankfully only a few years older than Emily, as he carefully inked a response back to the Empress. Corvo bowed his head to the fellow servant before walking stiffly back down the hallway.
It would take several minutes for him to reach Emily's room, and Corvo felt compelled to slow his steps and take The Heart from her pouch. He looked over the softly beating flesh and tilt his head, wondering if she would have anything to say about this.

Though Corvo rarely call on her now that the battles were fought. But it did not mean that she was free of him. She drifted, detached and aware. A ghost about his shoulder that he never quite let go of. But nor could she let go of him (she gave him her heart, on a silver platter, and swore it would never, ever part from him again).
How could she go? Torment as this was, it was worse the thought that she could not help him. Alone as he tried to be a father to a girl that had grown up to fast.
It was endearing, almost, that he still turned to her. It took her the same moment, to fight it all down to what he wanted to know at this moment. Thoughts of a mother, and they were hard to pin to her, and her mind alone. Not every mind of the palace, of the city. Not every mother, from the poor ones that smothered their children from inability to feed themselves, to the courtly women who guarded their heirs like wolves over their last meals.
( Somewhere far away the whales sung. )
"The other boys are jealous that he makes her laugh." A pause, and she cannot speak unless bidden by him to do so. But sometimes, she could say more than was needed if she phrased it right. The Outsider's limitations always had loopholes. "Geoff has not yet realized what it means to make an Empress smile."
A quietly given warning, and it was not the empty remarks that came so often with the city, of despair. For once her concern bled through, for them both the way the -- Empress had fussed, once. Over a naive boy and a wistful girl. She could not say very much, other than the boy needed him if he was going to survive being the childhood crush of the ruler of an Empire.

Emily was much the same, sometimes almost too honest. She wasn't as grounded in reality as her mother had been however and this was one of those cases. As Corvo's boots softly moved along the polished floor he thought of the dangers to Geoff and the potential heartache for Emily. Therein lie his mixed emotions. He wanted for her to experience all of life fully but that meant the bad times along with the good. She had already seen far too many bad times. Everyone in Dunwall had.
Corvo glanced down at the Heart with a soft sigh as his other hand came up to look at the letter he carried for Emily. The pauper's handwriting was stilted and ungraceful compared to Emily's. It was sweet, and worrisome with the Heart's words echoing in his mind.
I once made an Empress smile, Corvo found himself thinking wistfully, aware the Heart very well could hear his thoughts like she could everyone else's. "I do not regret that," Corvo said aloud to the beating heart, a slight smile as he looked down upon what was left of her.

You still do, is what she wants to say. To console him. To tell him that Emily will take the same risks she did, and not find them lacking. Not if Geoff was half the man Corvo was, would she regret it.
She tries, as she had so many times, her fingers going to touch him, to run over his shoulders. To lean in and kiss his cheek as she had so many times before.
But Jessamine was hollow, and he stepped through her hands. Even as his thoughts, and his words brought a smile to her lips once more. Like he always had. And his words were enough to let her speak, around and about, even if she could never do anything directly any more.
" If he is... kind. She will love him, and regard him, all her life long." Maybe perhaps not, the greatest love affair the world had ever seen, not for an Empress. But enough for a young girl to have good memories of. ( let him keep all the good memories. for them both. let it end happily. ) "She loves like -- She is her mother's daughter."
The Last Empress. Her fingers curled around the air where he had strode through. The memories of jumble, of a hundred different lovers, from times gone so far past, the one's that hadn't happened yet. A hundred different repeats of the cycle, and the one she had been. Missed him, missed him, missed him. Even when he was right there, in front of her.

Corvo thought heavily upon the Heart's words as he ascended several staircases before turning down the hallway to Emily's room. But again he stopped halfway to the large set of double doors, doors he had come and gone from a thousand times while the mother still lived. Corvo swallowed, his throat feeling dry as he thought of the warm shiver he'd felt downstairs as Jessamine's voice visited his mind.
Kindness: there were degrees of it, shades and nuances of it, just as there was to cruelty. Honesty could be cruel, so could mercy. Death could be a kindness, as could dominion. Emily would have to learn these things in time and Corvo regretted that he had been her teacher these past years. No matter how much good he had tried to do, there had been acts of cruelty. He knew that. He felt the letter inside his pocket and thought of the boy.
He is kind, Corvo decided, his other hand moving to the pouch carrying the Heart. That hand, with its dark mark, stretched as he continued his steps onward to the girl's room and gently knocked. Emily was quickly up and opening it for him to bid him inside. Corvo offered the letter over. "It is late for you both," he said as gently as he could, reaching up to touch her hair by her ear. They shared a smile before Corvo bowed to his new Empress and bid her a goodnight.
His own room was across the hall and he entered silently and removed his coat before taking the Heart again out of her pouch, and he gently laid it upon his bed as he wandered back and forth removing various charms and weapons. "Do you regret?" he asked her directly, stopping in front of the bed to stare at the gently beating flesh.

Unbeknowst to them both, as Corvo gave Emily her letter, she entered the chambers like she -- the Empress -- had when she was alive. Memories skittering forth like mice from their cracks when the cat slept. Of hours spent pacing in the riots, the minutes spent screaming bringing Emily into the world. This room held so much. Too much. Her pains, her joys. Cursing Corvo's name and whispering it like a prayer.
Should she had been able to, she would of taken a sharp breath with it all, felt her head spin. But it was a sharp jolt of clarity, before she was drawn back to Corvo's side. Whispering Emily goodnight. Feeling second hand thoughts of how Corvo looked at her as if they were her own. His worries over this little love affair in stolen notes.
A night like anything other, when she was in his rooms again. Another place she had spent too much time, and she contented herself to slip away whilst he dreamt, into the steady flow of the city as it hummed, in the void that trickled between the cobblestones. Drawing in all the world to tell to him when he asked, and had he asked other things -- if only that she could not answer this easily. It was too direct, too betraying of how he felt, and he said so very little most times. For it alone, she wanted to give him solace. So much so. Now she must word around, take the sum of the whole and it drives her to frustration.
"The wise men philosophise in their halls." A breath, and she tried yet again. "That the greatest regret; is the love never expressed." How she wished she'd told them both more often, if there was a regret more than her own foolishness, it was that. Should have told him the day he left over and over again. Taken the chance when he returned.
The silence stretched almost too long.
"Do you?" He might of lived a quiet life in Serkonos. Where the troubles of a dead Empress and her daughter were nothing. On the far side of a barricade, they would have laughed at the foolish men and women of Gristol, and cheered that another was dead when the Lord Regent fell, if only because it was an excuse to drink more. Another life, somewhere in the depths, that he might of had -- had he never met her.

There were a great many things he almost regretted, questions of morality and choice that kept him up at night and carved frown lines on his aging face. Is it better to kill someone or ruin their life? Is it alright to steal from a man who is corrupt? How much red in his ledger added up to the lines of black and gray? Shades of kindness and cruelty, he thought with his own touch of sentimentality.
But that wasn't what she had asked him. Corvo looked toward the closed door, thinking of Emily. "Yes," he finally answered the Heart, his eyes downcast to the floor before slowing moving up to her. It was macabre, the piece of flesh joined with metal sitting there on his bed. His thoughts were wandering to strange places which made him realize just how tired he felt. Corvo stood up and moved to the bed and sat down, his hands gently cupping the Heart and he held her on his lap and stared down at her.
"This," was all that he elaborated. He regretted that The Outsider had done this to her. She had helped him innumerably over the course of his journey to free himself and Emily, yes, but Corvo felt as if he could have managed without all of the Outsider's magical relics. Perhaps that was arrogant of him, but he didn't feel as if it was worth the god's having done this to such an incredible woman. Maybe it couldn't have happened any other way, he didn't know, but he felt ashamed that it had come to this and he couldn't help feeling responsible and therefore also feeling regret.
