This is it. The final curtain. You're at the end of your life, and there's someone here you really, really need to say something to before you die.

CW: Death, violence, potentially mental illnesses and suicide.

CAUSE OF DEATH

1 - Accidental. Nobody meant for this to happen, but it doesn't matter now. Due to negligence, arrogance or just plain bad luck, you've become gravely ill or injured and are now in your last moments. This covers all kinds of accidental deaths--strangulation, drowning, car accidents, unintentional beheadings, whatever you can think of.

2 - Murder. Somebody really didn't like you. Enough to kill you, it seems. You're now dead by someone else's hand. (Maybe even the person replying to you?) As with accidental death, this covers all types of intentional, malicious murder, regardless of method--so poisoning, stabbing, shooting, etc., all work here. Same with all the below options: any possible variation you can think of on it will work!

3 - Suicide. There is no hope for you, and no way out. You've reached the absolute bottom pits of despair, and the only recourse you have is to take your own life. Someone shows up to stop you... but they're too late to help you now.

4 - Terminal illness. You have cancer, or tuberculosis, or cholera back when people got cholera. The doctors have done everything they could and it wasn't enough. The only thing to do now is give your loved ones the bad news.

5 - Starvation. So thirsty. So hungry. Maybe you've been traveling in the desert for hours, or maybe you're just really poor. Whatever the reason, it doesn't matter, because you're slowly wasting away until you're nothing but skin and bones.

6 - Death in battle. You've died a hero's death, and gone out in a blaze of glory. Or maybe you were a coward who got shot for deserting? Either way, you're now a casualty of war. Will you be honored with a parade or scorned as a traitor to your country?

7 - Natural causes. You've lived a long, happy life, and now your story is at an end. In a warm bed, surrounded by your family and friends, you peacefully drift off. Just make sure that you've made a will somewhere, or at least use your deathbed to set the record straight. Otherwise, who knows what kind of squabbles might errupt after you leave this world?

TIME LEFT

1 - A few minutes. You're fading fast and you don't have much, well, any time left. Better tell the person with you that you love -- or despise -- them with your last breath, because you'll never have the chance otherwise.

2 - A few hours. You haven't got much time left. Is there someone you still need to kill? To kiss? Better do it quick. (Note: last kisses not recommended for people dying of highly contagious illnesses.)

3 - A few days. The doctors have given you the news, and it's not very good. You've only got a couple days left to live. You should start trying to make peace with people and saying your final goodbyes with the days you have left.

4 - A few weeks. Take that vacation you've always wanted to go on but never had the chance to. Go do that thing you've never thought you'd be any good at. You've got only weeks left to live. Don't waste them.

5 - A few months. While you aren't quite on death's doorstep yet, your lifespan has still dwindled considerably from what you probably thought it would be. How are you going to spend your last few months on Earth? Making the world a better place and telling your family you love them? Or raising as much hell as possible?

RELATIONSHIP

1 - Lovers. This is your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, mistress, whatever you call them they were the person you wanted to spend your life with. Too bad you don't have much of a life to spend with them anymore.

2 - Siblings. Your beloved little or older sibling is just standing there, watching you slowly waste away before their eyes. Can you say anything to comfort them? Note that it doesn't necessarily have to be interpreted literally; adopted siblings and friends so close they might as well be siblings work too.

3 - Parent and child. Nothing is worse than a parent having to bury their child... except, maybe, a young child now alone in the world after losing their parent. As with the sibling prompt, this can be expanded to include parental figures and people who are LIKE a father/mother to you as well as actual biological parents.

4 - Co-workers, teammates or classmates. You were fighting for the same side. Or you worked together in the same office for years. Or they sat behind you in biology all semester. However you met, how do your react when you find out someone who used to be a fixture in your life is going to die?

5 - Friends. You're the best of friends! You go everywhere together, know all each other's secrets, and are never seen apart. At least, you didn't use to be. Now one of you is dying and the other one is left alone in the world. Or maybe you're dying together. Wait, is that better or worse?

6 - Bitter enemies. You hate, hate, HATE this person. In fact, maybe you killed them. Or they killed you. Or maybe nobody killed anybody and they're just bitter that Mother Nature got to you before they did. Regardless, they want to confront you one last time before you bite it, if only to rub your nose in your imminent demise and their ability to outlive you.

HOW IT WORKS:

1. This is where I am changing it up. Feel free to choose how you are going to die, just be sure to list the closest matching categories in your subject bar, along with your character and their series.

If you are having trouble coming up with a prompt or situation, feel free to use the random number generator. Or if you rather just take a risk feel free

2. Responding characters then roll for the relationship between the two of you. Optionally responding characters can also share your cause of death/time left to live or roll for their own, but that's not required. A living character caring for (or horribly mutilating) a dying one is fine, too.

However, considering this is in our RP feel free to have your characters keep their CR, just make sure to inform the person which ever way you're going with it before responding!

3. Tell the person what you need to tell them before you bite it.

4. Have fun!

[Every mission might be your last is a reality Ian was certainly well aware of, but being aware of and facing such a reality head-on are entirely different beasts.

It all happened quicker than he imagined, really. He'd seen drive units and engines go south, but never this far this quickly. Never beyond what he could salvage, and certainly never beyond what his team couldn't pull him out of. He supposed there was a first for everything. The warning alarms blared. He tried to tune them out as he worked relentlessly, even through the increasingly apparent futility of the situation.

Sooner or later someone would have to make a call, and when he lurched forward at the force of the drive unit detaching from the Lusitania, he knew the right decision had been made.

It was stupid move, not to mention entirely selfish, but he found himself turning off the radio chatter. He didn't need to listen for any rescue. There wouldn't be anyway. It was too dangerous now. The drive unit was drifting away now. It had to be in order to reach a safe distance before it reached full meltdown. Heat warnings beeped incessantly in front of Ian, and as fires used the ship's atmosphere for fuel, it occurred to Ian that he might not even see the end of this drive unit if he succumbed to oxygen deprivation first.

He switched to a private comm channel.]

Adam?
anyobjections: They slowly fade away (but why would you do that?)

[personal profile] anyobjections 2014-02-24 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
[It all seemed so surreal, like a simulation gone wrong or just a bad daydream. Time sped by like a series of electrical impulses; a malfunction followed by blaring red alarms, a critical alert status followed by a decision made no less mechanical than the very ship they were disengaging, and the desperate pleas of Samus being drowned in a cacophony of duty and cold logic. Every soldier and every commander was prepared for losses, even personal ones. It was expected. It was just a part of the mission. It was just a part of his job--their job.

And there was no going back.

The last visages of Ian flickered away on the monitor, swallowed up forever in digital static. Adam's arms hung at his sides for a few precious seconds, unsure of what to do before they automatically folded up tightly behind his back. He retreated down the main deck's hallway, his legs seemingly moving with the same automatic sense while everyone on deck was still trying to process what just happened.

There was nothing more to think about. Ian was gone. That should be easy to process. Until he heard his voice clipping in his ear, and only his ear.

His body went numb as if a ghost were speaking to him, which unfortunately wasn't about to be far from the truth. How much more could he rely on "automatic"...? What should he say? This should be easy to process... but all Adam could do was murmur softly:]

I'm here, Ian.

[Ian lets the breath he'd been holding waiting for a response. It was comforting, in a way, to hear his brother's voice, crackling loud enough to be made out over the heat warnings and hull breaches.

He's silent. He's silent for entirely too long when every second now is worth everything and somehow simultaneously meaningless. Finally, he manages to form the words.]

It was the right call.

[Not that Adam needed Ian to confirm that, but it's sympathetic and earnest in its delivery. Most of all, it's an apology to his brother. His brother who, despite the small spats and squabbles, despite the differences of opinion on the importance of regulation, despite that Ian knew he would never be half the leader his brother was, remained as one of the most solely important people in Ian's life, a better role model than he could have ever hoped for, and although stiff and stuffy, a confidant when he needed him to be.

He's glad to have served under him.

Ian sits back in the chair of the maintenance cabin, his work, now futile, totally forgotten. He leans his head against the small porthole, his helmet making a slight thump on the thick panes of plastic between him and the cold breaches of space. In his peripheries, he can see the outermost parts of the unit break off or explode as they keep towing the Lusitania to safety.]

I couldn't have asked for a better commander. Or a better brother.

[They should have been words of comfort to Adam too; his brothers final words not judging or embittered with his tragically difficult choice... but every one felt like a bullet through his chest regardless. This would have been so much easier if Ian stayed silent and if Samus's naive words of hope hadn't planted a sliver of doubt and regret in his heart, but Adam wasn't sure he'd be able to live with himself if he didn't answer his little brother back.

The thought of silence was somehow unbearable right now.]

You did good, Ian. I'm proud of you.

[As your commander, as your brother.]

I'm... [His voice cracked, dry and struggling to say anything more. He couldn't apologize for this. He couldn't. He shouldn't. There wasn't any time left to balk at this.]

It's not goodbye forever.

[personal profile] redshirted 2014-02-24 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
No. It's not.

[There's almost relief in his voice as his brother keeps talking to him. It keeps his mind off the warnings that are increasingly harder and harder to tune out. It stops him from thinking too much about how his breath is becoming more and more labored as precious oxygen is fed into the flames that have already filled the rest of the maintenance chambers.

Another explosion jostles the cabin Ian's in, but he's already fighting to stay alert and conscious that the bumps don't even alarm him anymore. Unfortunately, it's probably damaged the communications unit and short-ranged communications can't be sustained much longer, which becomes obvious as static starts to bleed into their channel.]

She really was a beautiful ship.
anyobjections: Stand up beside the fireplace (It's gotten worse.)

[personal profile] anyobjections 2014-02-25 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
[It's easy to hear his rapidly deteriorating condition and Adam's surprised he's lasted as long as he has already. For what little anyone else on deck knew Ian already gone forever, nothing but space dust.]

She is.

[Adam simultaneously wishes the precious last-seconds he had with his brother could keep ticking on, and that they would end to put Ian out of his misery quickly and painlessly. He wasn't even sure he's words would make it anymore through the hissing and crackling static.]

Samus is... safe. I kept her here.

[He almost smiles, or he tries to at least. Of course she would try and save him. Hoarsely, manages a reply. It's not an admonishment or disapproval, but simply a fact between the members of the Federation that know her best.]

Good. Even if she'll-- [Ian has to stop and wheeze somewhere in between the cackling on the comm] --hate you for that.

[It wasn't fair to keep Adam on the line much longer and Ian starts to panic that he won't be able to cut the channel in time. He's clinging desperately to the threads of consciousness as black starts to bleed into his field of vision. Clumsily he tries to find the radio controls, armored hands knocking against control panels with little dexterity now.]

Keep on-- keep on keeping her-- [He has to pause, recalling words and looking for the radio controls was becoming increasingly difficult and some things might be getting jumbled between his stuttering 'uhs' and his breathing and the static] --safe. She's got big things to do.

[There. There is that control. There's something very final about the act of cutting off communications. Somehow more final than his inevitable fate.]

Adam?
anyobjections: Promises we made were in vain, vain, vain (And went our separate ways)

[personal profile] anyobjections 2014-02-26 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I promise.

[The cackling and his labored breathing of his brother did more to break his stoic facade than any of the words being said. Adam grimaces as if sharing his pain in anyway might lessen it, of course for naught.

All in the flash of a second Adam deeply wished he could have somehow found more time for Ian. He often felt more like a commander than a brother and it wasn't fair he, in this flash of a second, only came to realize that just moments before his brother's untimely demise. There was nothing that could be done.

It was time. Time to end this freak accident, this forsaken situation, and this tragic outcome. End both their suffering.

End it, Ian. Please.]

See you next mission.

Yeah. See--

[In his efforts to spare Adam from experiencing the finality of the situation from his perspective, Ian cuts himself mid word and is replaced by the cackling of a cut off comm channel.]
