Sentinel AU meme

Sentinels and Guides are Known:
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels, whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states, and Guides, empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Sentinels are meant to protect Guides and it is said that for every Sentinel, there exists a Guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal/unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

Prompts
1. The Meeting:
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

2. The Bonding:
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

3. Rejection:
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

4. Protection:
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

5. Lost:
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

6. Persecution:
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

7. Death:
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner. Maybe your Sentinel protected you or old age got you or someone got sick and you're watching them die, knowing that you'll follow.

8. Old-School:
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

9. Unbonded:
Nothing sucks more than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

Nobody's glare was as menacing as Fury's, especially when he was in full-on Sentinel mode, which was something that most of them had only seen once, if even that often. Mostly because by the time things got that bad, they were busy containing or busy being unconscious.

He laughed at the statement, just once, shaking his head, "And the last thing we want is you scandalizing some nuns with a death-glare."
lunarwolf: (misgivings haven't gone)

"Yeah, I'd prefer to avoid that, too." But then, pausing, his hands searched his pockets, something at last coming to mind. They'd been sent out for item retrieval, after all, and Merrick had been keeping it on his person. If the box had fallen out during the fight, he was going to be kicking himself for a year.

Clint realized almost immediately what that search was for, and so he prepared to get off the highway again at the next cloverleaf, "Do we have to go back?"

Sure, it meant they'd have to talk to the cops, but that was less of an inconvenience than having that artifact fall into the wrong hands.

[personal profile] lunarwolf 2013-11-06 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not sure. Just a sec--"

Merrick was almost sure he was the only person who actually used all the pockets on his cargos. One by one, he checked his pockets until he found it in the pocket at his calf. "Got it. Thank the Spirits."

The stone was still safe and sound. One of the only reasons to send a jeweler on that sort of mission.

Clint relaxed almost instantly at the discovery, easing back into the faster flow of traffic and stretching in his seat a little, "Small favors, right?"

He glanced sideways at Merrick once more, "So what's the story with that thing, anyway?" He hadn't actually seen it himself, he'd just helped orchestrate its retrieval. All he knew for certain was that it was something SHIELD had been trying to track down for a while.

"Ever heard of Atlantis? Well, after it turned out Asgard was a real place, people started taking rumours of Atlantis much more seriously. Between the tesseract and the rift in the sky, murmurs about crystals with power kind of started gaining a following," Merrick said quietly, settling the box in his lap, where he could easily lay a hand over it. "Most people wrote it off, like the thirteen crystal skulls thing, but when a certain Latverian noble started paying attention, SHIELD decided they needed to pay attention, too."
ihazanest: (looking up)

[personal profile] ihazanest 2013-11-07 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"That ... actually makes sense. Huh." He shrugged one shoulder, willing to let it go at that, because he really didn't need to know any more about it than that, that information was good enough for him.

Though he'd probably ask Coulson what SHIELD planned on doing with it, hopefully it was just a case of bag-and-tag, but he never could be sure with artifacts like that.
lunarwolf: (seek the reason)

[personal profile] lunarwolf 2013-11-07 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," he chuckled, thumb tracing the corner of the box. "Looks like everybody's been sticking a finger in Earth for a long time."

He paused.

"Well. A finger at the least."

[personal profile] ihazanest 2013-11-07 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)

He snickered at that, "So what you're saying is that some aliens have stuck other anatomy here. Good to know that some of the Weekly World News headlines are true." Of course, he'd already known that a few of them were, considering who he worked for and some of the things they dealt with on a daily basis.

Stretching and settling again he glanced over at Merrick once more, "You doing okay?" Sure, he'd just asked not fifteen minutes ago, but verification was only a good thing.

He took a breath before nodding. "Yeah, I'm all right. I think my vision's starting to go back to normal."

Despite being blind, he looked over toward Clint. "When we're a little closer, about halfway there, I'd like to stop for a walk. Just to work out some kinks."
ihazanest: (Default)

[personal profile] ihazanest 2013-11-08 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Good." He said of the first, and then: "I think we can manage that. I'm pretty sure there's an actual rest stop at about the halfway point. One of the state park ones. At least, I guess it's the parks department that does the upkeep on them, I don't know that I ever really paid attention to who's in charge of those."
lunarwolf: (I sought truth for you)

[personal profile] lunarwolf 2013-11-08 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Me either. But if it's got a decent place to walk, that's all I really care about. My hands stopped stinging a while ago, but I think I'm going to have a nice bruise on one shin." Fighting wasn't just a matter of beating up one person. Bruises happened all around.

"Yeah, they've usually got a greenbelt and a restroom and a couple vending machines, space to stretch your legs when you're doing a long-haul drive. They're pretty much lifesavers, sometimes."

The circus hadn't often stopped at them, they usually stopped at larger truck stops, but sometimes someone had to change a tire, or someone had to pee somewhere that wasn't the side of the road for once, and they were definitely good for that.

lunarwolf: (moments true)

[personal profile] lunarwolf 2013-11-09 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, they are. Especially on a motorcycle." At least in a car, you could shift in your seat. On a motorcycle, there was only one way to sit and stay in control. Stiffness swiftly followed, especially on long trips.

Merrick was still getting used to cars, in fact, after much of his life had been spent on motorcycles.

Tentatively, he opened his eyes to check his vision and exhaled with relief. "Back to normal."
ihazanest: (smug)

[personal profile] ihazanest 2013-11-10 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Good." He was relieved to hear it, really, because the longer the overcompensation of any particular sense went on, the harder it was to reel the Sentinel in, "And yeah, I try not to do long hauls on the bike for just that reason."

Because of course Clint had a motorcycle, why wouldn't he?
lunarwolf: (these memories fade away)

[personal profile] lunarwolf 2013-11-10 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Little hard to travel in numbers on bikes, too." Made conversation really difficult unless they had helmet radios, which wasn't a problem but with situations like they'd just been in, it could've been disastrous. Merrick couldn't drive a bike with his vision stuck on magnify. "Wonder what we'll be tossed into next," he mused, though, thoughtful. "What Fury will come up with for us."

[personal profile] ihazanest 2013-11-13 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)

"We'll probably keep getting the non-combat missions." Clint replied, "Unless it's a group project." Which had happened more than once, and even the non-combat missions often called for Clint in a sniper's nest somewhere, just because there wasn't going to be a full-on battle didn't mean they didn't need him there as backup in case things didn't go according to plan.

He shrugged, "Which means it could be just about anything, knowing what gets dropped into SHIELD's hands."

lunarwolf: (I won't betray)

[personal profile] lunarwolf 2013-11-13 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe I'll have a little time to look into this stone," he murmured, turning thoughtful. "If it really is an Atlantis crystal, it might be part of something bigger."

It went without saying that he was thinking about the Tesseract.

[personal profile] ihazanest 2013-11-14 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)

Even without calling it by name just knowing what he was talking about made the back of Clint's neck prickle, as did any mention of Loki, though those were few and far between now, at least around him. For now, though, he didn't mention it, just nodded, "Yeah, we'll probably get a little bit of downtime before the next one."

A crooked smile, "Probably no more than a day or two, though, they don't like us to get bored."

lunarwolf: (moments true)

[personal profile] lunarwolf 2013-11-15 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Spirits forbid we actually get a bit of a rest," he smirked. "I'd like to have a few hours of just doing nothing for once. Relaxation. A long shower, maybe even a bath, and then just to lay in bed and do nothing." But it felt like a pipe dream sometimes. Like, no matter what happened, he'd always have a knot of tension at the back of his neck.
ihazanest: (Default)

[personal profile] ihazanest 2013-11-15 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)

"Oh we'll get enough time for that, might even get a whole day before we get sent off on another wild goose chase." He paused, brow creasing, "Except that means that what we were sent after didn't actually exist, and that's definitely not what happened here."

He shook his head, "Doesn't matter, we'll get a day or two before the next mission, SHIELD knows better than to run its agents too hard." Usually, there had been times where they hardly seemed to have time to breathe before they were being sent off after another artifact or another person or on another surveillance mission.

lunarwolf: (with just a smile)

[personal profile] lunarwolf 2013-11-16 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Merrick glanced over. "Want to join me? We'll build a blanket fort. Number one downtime entertainment of overworked SHIELD agents."

It was a rare thing, Merrick's playful side. It usually only showed in the outdoors if it showed at all. But now, just now, he felt like it was time.

[personal profile] ihazanest 2013-11-16 01:11 am (UTC)(link)

He actually grinned at that himself, "Sure. We can operate under our own jurisdiction, soverign state or something. It'll at least delay them for a while finding an ambassador before they can send us on another mission."

A nod, drumming his fingers against the wheel, "Good plan."

lunarwolf: (seek the reason)

[personal profile] lunarwolf 2013-11-16 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Our currency can be beef jerky or something-- No, that wouldn't work. I'd eat it all. Soda tabs? Less likely for me to create scarcity." He smirked. "We'll have to name our nation."
ihazanest: (standing tall)

[personal profile] ihazanest 2013-11-17 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
"We'd need something easier to get ahold of, I think. Maybe that half-size play money that you can get at dollar stores and gas stations. And a name, hnn."

He actually seemed to think that one over for a moment, fingers still drumming, "Is Badassia already an actual place?"
